CPH 714 Maternal and Child Health Information and Data Systems (Spring 2012, 2013, 2015). A new course for UK CPH first offered in Spring 2012, this course introduces students to various maternal and child health information systems, including the Maternal and Child Health Bureau s Title V Information System (TVIS), the National Center for Health Statistics, federal surveys and non-profit information systems. With a practical, applied focus, this is required course for those participating in the UK CPH Maternal and Child Health Certificate (3 credit hours).
CPH 715 Perinatal Epidemiology (Fall 2012-2014). A new course at for UK CPH first offered in Fall 2012, Perinatal Epidemiology will equip participants with basic skills in the field of perinatal epidemiology and its application in the field of Maternal and Child Health. Topics include maternal and infant mortality/morbidity, congenital anomalies and immature births (preterm, low birthweight, small for gestational age). This course prepares students who are interested in understanding and exploring why morbidity and mortality occur, providing them with both basic clinical knowledge, practical data experience and epidemiologic understanding of key topics. (3 credit hours). CPH 712 Advanced Epidemiology (Spring 2011 Co-Instructor). Graduate class of 23 students providing information about advanced issues in the design, analysis, and interpretation of epidemiologic studies. Coinstructor for the course with duties that included shared responsibility for grading and lecturing. The course was team-taught with contributions from all department faculty. University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health CPH 554 Maternal and Child Health Information and Data Systems (Summer 2011-2013) Distance-learning (asynchronous) class taught on-line using D2L Learning Management System. This 6-week 2 credit-hour accelerated course introduces students to various maternal and child health information systems, including the Maternal and Child Health Bureau s TVIS, the National Center for Health Statistics, federal surveys and non-profit information systems. As an adjunct lecturer of the University of Arizona, I am responsible for class development, grading and lectures to a diverse group of working professionals from across the nation. The development of this class is supported through HRSA Grant T04MC16880 and targeted to meet the needs of health providers working in rural areas, particularly in Appalachian Kentucky and with tribal health departments or agencies. This 2-credithour course is part of a larger certificate program called the Graduate Certificate Program in Maternal and Child Health, a partnership between the University of Arizona and the University of Kentucky (Awarded 2010 through 2015). University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health MCH 601: Maternal and Child Health Programs and Policy (Spring 2009 - Co-Instructor). This graduate class (19 students) was designed to provide students with knowledge about current major MCH programs and a framework for the analysis of MCH programs and policies in the United States. This includes issues related to advocacy, current public policy reform movements, research and data issues. Co-instructor for the course with duties that included the primary responsibility for syllabus development, homework/exam development and grading as well as the shared responsibility of lecturing. Dr. Mary Ann Pass was co-instructor (and course-master) for the class (3 credit hours). MCH 605: Basic Research Methods for Maternal and Child Health Practitioners (Fall 2007 - Teaching Assistant). This course provides an introduction to basic research methods with a specific focus on their use in the field of Maternal and Child Health (MCH). Developed and presented An Introduction to Injury Epidemiology, webinar #1 under this project. Oral Health Epidemiologist/Grant-Writer Health Care Access Branch; Division of Adult and Child Health, Department for Public Health July 2003 through May 2006 Duties include coordination of Oral Health Collaborative Systems Grant ($ 65,000 annually), which supports three projects; the development of a statewide children's oral health surveillance system, a Statewide Oral Health Strategic Plan and a Dental Workforce Analysis study. As coordinator of Kentucky's State System Development Initiative (SSDI), duties include improved data linkage and integration within selected Maternal and Child Health programs ($ 100,000 annually). The primary goal is the development of an integrated electronic data system for Kentucky's Newborn Metabolic Screening Program in partnership with the University of Louisville School of Public Health and Information Sciences. Includes training for the field on performance measures and objectives, core health and development indicators. Coordinator of Kentucky's SSDI Grant, supporting the development of MCH Data Repository for the Division, FOCUS - Furthering Our Children s United Services. Participating on the FOCUS Implementation Committee and developed Commonly Asked Question portion of system (static reports). Chair of the Annual Maternal and Child Health Conference, held in September in Louisville, a two and one half day conference, drawing nearly 1,000 health professionals from both public and private sectors. Program Coordinator - Abstinence Education Initiative, Division of Adult and Child Health Department for Public Health - Commonwealth of Kentucky May 1998 to October 2000 Administered Kentucky s Abstinence Education Initiative, with duties including federal grant application and reporting ($ 990,488 annually for five years), financial administration, training and technical support to the field and oversight of funded projects at the local level. 4
Executive Director, Kentucky East Chapter March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, Lexington, Kentucky October 1991 to April 1998 With a Chapter area serving a population of 1.9 million and covering 64 counties, the Kentucky East Chapter was supported by approximately 10,000 volunteers and included 12 staff in three locations in Central and Eastern Kentucky. Duties included preparation and administration of the chapter budget, review and approval of all expenditures and oversight to assure that the chapter s financial affairs and records were administered and maintained in accordance with the foundation s policies and accounting procedures. Annual Chapter fundraising efforts exceeding $ 850,000 in 1997. In addition to fundraising and general administration, I also served as Chair of the Kentucky Birth Surveillance Advisory Committee (1997 to 1999) and the Substance Abuse subcommittee for the State of Kentucky s Healthy Start/Healthy Families Task Force (1996). March of Dimes Statewide Program Services Committee Member, Greater Kentucky Chapter Committee Co-Chair - September 2002 to December 2003 Committee Member - July 2001 to December 2005 Legislative Passage of Senate Bill 336 Fall 1997/Spring 1998. Coordinated passage of legislation during the 1998 Legislative Session. As Executive Director of the Kentucky East Chapter of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, I met with legislators, state health professionals, the Kentucky Hospital Association, families and the media to coordinate support for changes to Kentucky State Regulations, which enabled access to medical records for purposes of review by authorized officials of the Kentucky Birth Surveillance Registry. These regulation changes paved the way for Kentucky to apply for a CDC Cooperative Agreement, which was successful (more detail provided under Grant Writing) and provided funding for Kentucky's Birth Surveillance Registry for three years. This experience was one of the most rewarding opportunities to date in my career. An MCHB training grant, integrating the resources of two academic institutions, the University of Kentucky College of Public Health and University of Arizona College of Public Health. The application proposes to create an on-line maternal and child health training program for rural maternal and child health practitioners, with a primary focus on rural Kentucky and American Indian/Alaskan native tribal health departments. Received: $ 180,000 each year for 5 years. Principal Investigator: John Ehiri, Ph.D. Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Programs Arthritis Component, CDC 2004/2005. Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, CDC Spring 2003 Assisted childhood lead program staff in the preparation of this competitive grant application for Kentucky for increased childhood lead testing and casemanagement services. Received: $ 839,192 Mission Improvement Outreach Program (MIOP) Grant, National March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation - Summer 1999 Primary author and coordinator of grant-writing team for the National March of Dimes Competitive MIOP Grant. Applied for folic acid community and health professional education project for the purpose of neural tube defect reduction in three Kentucky counties, noted for high levels of incidence for neural tube defects. Received: $ 150,000 Birth Defects Surveillance Cooperative Agreement, CDC - Fall 1998. As co-author of Kentucky s Birth Defects Surveillance Registry grant application for this competitive grant, I worked with academic partners and the state to plan initial application.
