Online Family Chat Thursday, March 10, 2016 familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): Good Afternoon! Thank you for joining our chat today! My name is Arie Gee and I am the Assistant Director for Family Programs and Engagement here in the Dean of Students Office. familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): Hi my name is Jaime and I am the Associate Dean of Students and Director of New Student and Family Programs. I look forward to connecting today! Arosacker: Good Afternoon, my name is Ana and I am the parent of a new student for the fall semister. familychatmoderator(jackie_newstudentandfamilyprog): Hello Everyone, my name is Jackie Bonilla and I am the Asst. Director for Transitions Programs in the Dean of Students Office! smgerard: Hi all. My name is Stephanie, and I am the mom of a rising sophomore. reneesalley@msn.com: where does a student get the list of internships? familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): @Arosacker, thanks for joining us today! These chats are designed for current families, but you are welcome to join us! familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): @reneesalley, the Career Resource Center has a great resource called Gator Career Link where students can upload their resume and search the database for jobs and internships! familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): Welcome Stephanie! pathathome: Hi. I'm Lori. Have a freshman Gator daughter. familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): Hi Lori welcome! Arosacker: Could you give me some references regarding housing for Freshman starting PACE? Arosacker: Is there a different resource or chat that I should be logging in to for New students? familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): Arosacker, Off Campus Life can be a great resource to find the perfect fit off campus familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): http://www.offcampus.ufl.edu/ familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): we don't have any more upcoming PaCE Family chats for new families but are happy to help. familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): You can always email us at newstudentinfo@dso.ufl.edu or call 352 392 8396 BocaUF: if student geta temperatelyjob in home town during summer, is it count summer internship credit? does internship credit only count the intern through UF? Arosacker: I have some questions regarding total number of credits needed to transition to on campus courses? I have read a total of 60 and also then read 2 semister? Could you clarify? familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): Hi BocaUF great question, It will depend on the college. Most colleges do not mind if it is a formal internship through UF however the student will have things they will need to complete as part of completing the internship credit. The academic advisor can also help walk through these steps. familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): Hi Arosacker, it is both, the student would need to complete both 60 credits, 15 credits online and at least 2 semesters BocaUF: how many internship credit will be count for summer, like summer C? Can student will do this process after summer, or have to be done before spring semester end?

Arosacker: So if a student has 30 credits from AP courses and dual enrollment...should he be able to complete 2 semisters of 15 credits and be able to transfer onto campus courses? familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): @BocaUF, it is best if your student arranges this with his or her college before the end of the spring semester. The internship credit is based on the number of hours that they intern. familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): @Arosacker, that is correct. The student would need 15 credits both semesters (fall and spring) and then would be able to transition to campus the following summer marting.25@outlook.com: What programs of study allow students to take courses at Santa Fe? familychatmoderator(jackie_newstudentandfamilyprog): Hi Martin.25, it depends on the college and major. Your student can speak with an academic advisor to see what is possible. Arosacker: Would any credits taken outside of UFin summer 2016, would they count towards the needed 30? Also if I understand correctly...only 15 of the total 60 credits must be taken through UF online? familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): @Arosacker, that is correct. familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): @Arosacker, we also have a chat specifically for PaCE students and families next Thursday from 2 4 if you have specific questions about the PaCE program or the requirements! Arosacker: Excellent! I appreciate all the help today! familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): We are happy to help! reneesalley@msn.com: I am little confused.. does each student at UF have to do an internship? for credit hours? Maybe I am reading between the lines familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): Hi Renee, no not all students do, however some majors do require it familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): sports management and business both do familychatmoderator(jackie_newstudentandfamilyprog): Renee They can always do one for fun or extra experience but it is up to them in that case! reneesalley@msn.com: Thank you, I encourage her to, for the experience alone BocaUF: where can find intern for summer? catorcareerlink no allow parent do search familychatmoderator(jackie_newstudentandfamilyprog): BocaUF: They can fidn it through the Career Resource Center. But sometimes, depending on the program of study, individual programs and colleges will have a few opportunities listed for them as well. Their program will do a great job of assisting your student through that process! mabear: my student is interested in applying for a summer internship (at UF incidentally), the application requests 2 professor recommendations, but he feels that all he has not been able to establish any relationship with his professors since his classes are so large, and is apprehensive to approach them Any advice? familychatmoderator(ashley_advisor): Good afternoon, I am an Academic Advisor for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I just opened a chat for academic advising. Please let me know if you have any academicrelated questions! familychatmoderator(jackie_newstudentandfamilyprog): @mabear... the best advice that your student begin establishing that relationship with them. Going to office hours is a great way to start! If he took First Year Florida, his instructor may also be a great resource!

familychatmoderator(jackie_newstudentandfamilyprog): @mabear establishing that relationship is key, so anything like office hours, meetings, asking about their research/field of study is highly encouraged! I would also suggest that once he connects with a faculty member, that he maintains that relationship and communicates periodically to maintain that connection. mabear: thank you for the input, I am afraid it is too late for applying for this year, but will definitely be something to work toward next year. audreyedm@hotmail.com: Good afternnoon every one, will you please let me know when is the time to request the transient student form and the due dates? musiclover: My student mentioned that the schedule of courses for fall is showing the class period as TBA for a class she needs to register for. Will the actual time for the class be posted by registration date? Thank you. familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): there isn't a due date on transient forms however they do take time to process the sooner the better. familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): Musiclover, TBA typically is the indicator for an online course audreyedm@hotmail.com: Thanks! musiclover: I am not sure is an online class. It is Intro to Student Affairs in the Education Department. mabear: regarding taking summer classes online, what is there a difference between taking them during summer A,B and C? familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): Oh my goodness this is too funny, that is the class I teach! familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): @mabear, Summer A is the first half of summer, Summer B is the second half, and Summer C is the entire summer! familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): We are working on getting a permanent course number and should know final time later this month familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): I have to say it is a pretty excellent class (but I may be biased) familychatmoderator(jaime_nsfp): Last year it was taught T from 2 5pm musiclover: Jaime: mabear: is there a benefit of taking an online course in one semester over an other or is it just a question of when it is offered? musiclover: Jaime musiclover: Thank you. I know you and Kris are wonderful. familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): @mabear, it is usually dependent upon when the class is offered. Summer A and B are more condensed as they cover the same material in about half the time. mabear: and is the requirement for graduation a minimum of 9 online credits? pathathome: Please clarify is there a requirement for all students to take online credits for graduation? I have not heard this before. familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): @mabear, there isn't a requirement for online courses, though most students will take a few online classes during their time. The 9 credit requirement is for Summer courses, which can be online or in person. pathathome: Thanks for clarifying. mabear: thank you for clarifying! familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): Absolutely! familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): Hi all, my name is Lynn O'Sickey and I'm an advisor in the Academic Advising Center. I'll be in the Advising Chat room to answer questions.

patricia3201: what (GE) N,B,P courses will you recommend for an 3 semester Psychology major student. patricia3201: Is there a limitednumber of WEB course a student can take per semester? familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): patricia3201, no, there's not a limit. familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): patricia, students may not find the courses they need are offered via web, but if those courses are available and it works best for the student, they can do it. patricia3201: what happens if a student does not met the minimum GPA requirement for the major? familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): patricia, do you mean the GPA required to stay on track? patricia3201: yes. familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): patricia, if the student is off track for the first time, they are given another semester to get back on track (as long as it is feasible). If the student is predicted to be off track for the second time (i.e., was off track after Fall and so appears off track this term, at least until grades post, most colleges will not let the student register until grades post. It does depend on the college, major and individual circumstances. patricia3201: So, can the course be re taken? familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): patricia, for most majors, you can repeat a course. Generally, if you have done very well in all the other tracking courses, then one poor grade will not mean you can't pursue the major. But multiple weak grades might indicate the major is not a good fit for the student. Whether to retake a course should always be discussed with an advisor. patricia3201: How soon can a student declare a major? BocaUF: if student register a class on other Florida college in summer, how long will be take to process through Shines, what is deadline for UF approve? familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): patricia, students can declare a major at Preview and they can continue to change majors throughout their time at UF provided the meet the requirements for the desired major and can graduate in a timely fashion. So it is common to change in the first two years, but less so later on. familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): BocaUF, there are several steps through FloridaShines. There's no 'deadline' for UF to approve. At this time of year, we get so many requests it can take several days to process them. And the Registrar's Office and other school also have to approve. BocaUF: can student cancel the course later after all paper work done and class start? patricia3201: Just to clarify! a student is allowed to take all WEB courses for any given semester. familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): BocaUF, approval does not actually register the student for the course, the student has to do that at the transient institution after being approved. So the student will then follow their registration policies for registering and dropping. familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): patricia, that's a very broad statement. I'd say it's possible, but it depends on the student's situation. For example, if your student needs a tracking course in Fall or he/she will be off track and that course is not offered via WEB, then your student may be able to register for all WEB courses, but then have holds placed because the student is not progressing in the major. familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): patricia, so your student should be discussing a plan for taking all WEB courses with his/her advisor. patricia3201: Thanks Lynn familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): : )

BocaUF: we are looking for study aboard program for summer, it did not give more detail even UF sponsor program, where can find more information? UF sponsor program mean UF will paid some cost? most program ask a application fee, want to know how easy or difficult can get in if they apply familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): BocaUF, UF sponsored does not mean UF will pay some of the cost, however, they can be cheaper. Give me a minute to find the info for you. stephaniepm: Hello, stephaniepm: How can I find out what dual enrollment credits of mine will be accepted into the PACE program? familychatmoderator(jackie_newstudentandfamilyprog): Hello everyone, we have a little bit over 10 minutes remaining of the chat. Are there any additional questions? familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): BocaUF, here's the info about a UF Sponsored overseas study program: UF sponsored programs have been developed by UF faculty and most of them are being taught by UF faculty as well. The majority of these programs award UF credit, with some programs offering transfer credit as well. familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): BocaUF, this can mean you pay UF tuition for some of the classes which can be cheaper and may be covered by financial aid, depending. familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): BocaUF, here's the link http://ufic.ufl.edu/sas/typesofprogramsexchange.html BocaUF: financial aid will apply for summer only? familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): stephaniepm, this is a family chat, if you were trying to join a PaCE chat for admitted students, that's a different chat. However, please feel free to email CLASpace@advising.ufl.edu with your question. BocaUF: so that mean if you apply the program, you have to apply financial aid just for this program? familychatmoderator(jackie_newstudentandfamilyprog): @boca it depends.. financial aid in most typical cases is applied to fall and spring only. When you apply for the program, depending on the cost, you can elect to apply for financial aid if it is needed. usually this comes in the form of scholarships or additional loans. familychatmoderator(jackie_newstudentandfamilyprog): I would suggest that once your student identifies a program of interest that they speak with a study abroad advisor! familychatmoderator(jackie_newstudentandfamilyprog): Alright folks, just a few more minutes left of this chat. Any additional questions? familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): BocaUF, not exactly, financial aid for overseas studies depends on the program. It just might be easier to apply regular financial aid for a program that is granting UF credit. And there is often less financial aid in summer (e.g. Bright futures doesn't cover), but there are scholarships for financial aid for overseas studies. BocaUF: thank alot patricia3201: Thank you to all Moderators for your time. familychatadministrator(arie_newstudent&familyprograms): Thank you all for joining us today! If you have questions outside of the Family Chat forum, you are always welcome to email IHaveAGator@ufl.edu and we are happy to help 7 days a week! familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): Thanks to all the families supporting their students!

Online Family Chat Academic Advising Thursday, March 10, 2016 rivero513: when do students register for fall 2016 classes? familychatmoderator(ashley_advisor): Rivero513, the Registrar's Office assigns each student a date and time to register so that the system does not get overloaded....more.. familychatmoderator(ashley_advisor): Your student can find his/her assigned registration time under the Registration Prep tab on student.ufl.edu familychatmoderator(ashley_advisor): Students register for Summer 2016 and Fall 2016 at the same time. familychatmoderator(ashley_advisor): Registration for both terms starts March 21st and goes on through April. The registration dates and times are assigned by number of credit hours earned. rivero513: my son has taken all his general ed classes (via dual enrollment). He is an engineering student One challenge he is facing is having to take engineering critical track courses only which can be very difficult. rivero513: Is he still require to take on 12 credits minimum? orangecityfl: rivero513 my son is having the same problem. familychatmoderator(ashley_advisor): Rivero513, yes I understand. Students need to be enrolled in 12 credits to be considered full time status. Academically, we do not require students to take 12 credits if they feel more comfortable attending as a part time student. However, for purposes such as financial aid in which they require students to be full time status to recieve certain aid, then he will still need to take 12 credits to be full time. familychatmoderator(ashley_advisor): My suggestion for students who have all their gen eds done via dual enrollment: familychatmoderator(ashley_advisor): Meet with an academic advisor in their college and discuss what other college requirements they will need that are not core 'tracking' courses. This will help break up the stressful workload of core courses. For example, familychatmoderator(ashley_advisor): I am a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Advisor, for our college though students come in with gen eds met, there are other requirements (electives, other concentrations) that I use to help students break up their core coursework their first and second year. College specific advising contacts can be found at the following link:http://www.ufadvising.ufl.edu/advisers.aspx rivero513: Thank you. familychatmoderator(ashley_advisor): You're welcome! Jan2015: I refreshed my page and now I can't see the previous messages. How do I load them? familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): Hi all, my name is Lynn O'Sickey and I'm an advisor in the Academic Advising Center. I'm taking over for Ashley who covered for me while I was in a meeting. Let me know if I can help with academic questions. audreyedm@hotmail.com: HI Lynn, my student is in the honor program, does he need to do something to renew his participation? familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): audreyedm, I don't think so, let me look... familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): audreyedm, not that I can see, though I would encourage your student to meet with an Honors advisor to discuss their program requirements and course offerings for Fall. audreyedm@hotmail.com: Ok Lynn, thank you! rivero513: What does a student need to do before taking a summer class at another state university?

familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): rivero513, the student needs the approval of his/her college. Usually students will talk with their advisor first, and then submit a transient form (request to take courses elsewhere) on the floridashines.org website. rivero513: thank you. familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): : ) audreyedm@hotmail.com: Lynn, when is the time to look for fall classes? familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): audrey, the Summer and Fall course schedules are out. Both the list view (by department) and the searchable view are available at: http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/soc/ familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): audrey, registration is beginning the week after next, so students should be seeing their advisor and planning their tentative schedules ASAP. audreyedm@hotmail.com: Lynn, does my student need to see the honors or his major advisor? familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): audrey, what major and is it correct your student is first year? audreyedm@hotmail.com: yes, my student is a freshman but he has more than 80 credits( because dual enrollment), Chemical engineering major. familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): I believe Engineering requires students to meet with their advisor every term. If your student has questions about the Honors requirements, he/she will need to meet separately with Honors. audreyedm@hotmail.com: Ok Lynn, Thanks again! familychatmoderator(lynn_advisor): Hi folks, any last academic questions for today?
