FALL 2017 MUSIC LESSON PROGRAM The Durham Arts Council provides the opportunity for children and adults to participate in individual music instruction from beginning to advanced skill levels. All instructors perform professionally, both as solo artists and with symphonies, chamber groups, opera companies and other music ensembles. The Individual Music Lesson program is offered in four 9-week semesters during the winter, spring and fall, and one 6 to 8 week semester during the summer. Every student enrolled in the individual music lesson program is invited to perform at the Spring Student Recital. To inquire about Individual Music Lessons, please call (919) 560-2726. MUSIC INSTRUCTOR BIOS JULIUS PRESCOTT (cello/violin/viola) is a native of Durham who received his musical training at Baldwin-Wallace College and Conservatory and the University of Notre Dame. Mr. Prescott is Assistant Principal Cellist in the Durham Symphony and performs with the Raleigh Symphony. His orchestral experience includes performances with the NC Symphony, Greensboro Symphony, Long Bay Symphony and Tar River Symphony. Some of Mr. Prescott s playing accomplishments include: Cellist in a select ensemble to open for Grammy & Emmy award winner Violinist Itzkah Perlman; Soloist at the Gateways Music Festival where he performed the incredibly difficult Shostakovich Concerto # 1; performances with Jazz greats Ben Tucker & Bob Alberti; Indigo Strings (which he founded) was selected to open program honoring gospel legend Shirley Caesar. Mr. Prescott s cello students have done well at all levels. His students have placed at All State, Triangle Youth Philharmonic, and a number of other testimonies of that fact. He believes part of being a great player is to be a great teacher. WINIFRED GARRETT (harp) Artistic Director/Founder of The Harp Studio in Durham, NC and Harp Instructor at WG Pearson GT Magnet Elementary School, Winifred Garrett is a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and hold a Masters Degree from the Manhattan School of Music. Principal Harpist for the Fayetteville Symphony, Ms. Garrett has played with many orchestras across the state including the Durham Symphony, Western Piedmont Symphony, and the North Carolina Symphony. A versatile performer, she has performed with such greats as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Spike Lee. As an instructor, Ms. Garrett has coached three students to first prize winnings in local and regional talent competitions. LUCIANO JOSEPH SUÁREZ (guitar) moved to the Raleigh-Durham area from Italy after having lived, taught and performed overseas for over a decade. He is currently teaching at North Carolina State University and performs frequently in the area as a sideman for various groups. Although Luciano s background is primarily classical, this Florida native ventured into jazz relatively later in his life, combining the rich cultural heritage with which he was raised to develop his own musical vocabulary. Improvisation has always been a big part of who I am as a musician, regardless of what I am playing. Luciano holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Miami and a Master s degree from Florida State University. He has studied with Bruce Holzman, Albert Koonce and José Costas. He has also performed in the masterclasses of Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Ricardo Iznaola, Yo Nishimura and Pepe Romero. LESLIE NICHOLAS (clarinet/saxophone) holds degrees from the University of Texas and Northwestern University, with post-graduate study at Cincinnati s College-Conservatory of Music. He has appeared at New York s Alice Tully Hall, Washington s Kennedy Center, in Brazil, New Zealand and across Europe in opera, orchestra, chamber music and solo roles. He has recorded with international soloist, Richard Stoltzman, and collaborated with artists Yolanda Kondonassis, Anton Kuerti, William Preucil, Jon Kimura Parker, Christopher O Riley, and the Veronika Quartet of Moscow. Other credits include the National Chamber Players, ProMusica, the Lancaster, Aspen and Grand Teton Festivals, Garth Newel Music Center, New York s Classic Chamber Orchestra, the West Virginia and Roanoke Symphonies, and the AIMS Festival in Austria and Italy. www.lesnicholas.com 22 FALL 2017 www.durhamarts.org 919-560-2726

DAC Music Lesson Policies MUSIC LESSON TUITION AND PAYMENT POLICIES - The Durham Arts Council strives to provide high quality music instruction, while keeping fees as low as possible. The individual music lesson fees are competitive to other providers in the Triangle area. To help us keep costs and fees down, your cooperation as our student is expected by paying promptly for your lessons. The Durham Arts Council provides two payment plans for your convenience. Cost per lesson: 30 minutes- $26 45 minutes- $40 60 minutes- $54 (Starting Summer 2017) PAYMENT PLAN A: Semester Tuition may be paid in full at the time of registration, prior to the first lesson. DAC can accept payment by cash, check, money order or credit card (Visa or Mastercard). Students who prepay tuition in full will receive a $12.00 discount on each semester s tuition. PAYMENT PLAN B (installments): This plan requires a 25% first installment of the full tuition for the semester prior to the first lesson, and then the tuition balance is automatically charged at the half way mark of your lessons to your credit or debit card. There is no fee for this service and you must have a credit card on file with DAC. MAKE UP CLASSES AND CANCELLATIONS - Students are expected to attend all lessons. Only one make up lesson per term is allowed for an individual lesson excused by the instructor due to illness or emergency. This lesson may be rescheduled with the instructor for the makeup week following the semester. The instructor may elect to schedule this make up lesson at another time during the current term, if there is space available. There are no refunds or credits given for any other missed lessons. Notification of inability to attend a lesson may enable the instructor to use the time productively, but does not excuse payment for the contracted lessons. If a student must cancel a lesson he/she should call DAC at least 24 hours in advance. If an instructor is absent for any reason, the instructor will schedule a makeup time for the missed lesson either during the term if possible, or during the makeup days at the end of the term. If an instructor is unable to make up your excused lesson or missed lesson due to instructor absence, then DAC will carry forward a credit on the student s account that may be applied toward the next semester s tuition. If DAC cancels classes due to inclement weather or other emergency, instructors will arrange make up lessons or the student s account will carry forward a credit to next semester. HOLIDAYS, EMERGENCY CLOSINGS AND INSTRUCTOR ABSENCE - Classes and music lessons are not held on major holidays when the Durham Arts Council is closed: New Year s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Instructors will reschedule lesson times with you as needed. INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY- In case of inclement weather DAC classes will be cancelled if the DAC building is closed. Students should call 919-560-2787 for building closures. If the DAC building is open or on a delayed opening or early closure during inclement weather classes may be cancelled on a case by case basis and students will be contacted by their instructor or DAC staff. WITHDRAWALS AND REFUNDS - If a student elects to discontinue lessons during a term, the semester tuition is nonrefundable and nontransferable to a subsequent term, and tuition may not be transferred to another family member s account. There are two exceptions to this: 1. Credits carried forward from the previous semester for missed lessons due to instructor absence or lessons cancelled by DAC due to inclement weather. 2. A new DAC music student may withdraw only after the first lesson. MUSIC LESSON REGISTRATION- All new and continuing students must register each semester with DAC School Office. A student will not be considered enrolled in the program and lessons may not begin until registration is completed and full payment or payment arrangements are made with DAC School. NEW STUDENTS- New students may enroll in the music lesson program at the beginning of a semester or at any time during the year when teaching time becomes available with a DAC instructor. A new student will register and complete enrollment forms the same as continuing students prior to the first lesson and will pay the semester tuition or arrange for a payment plan. The semester is prorated for new students based on starting date. If a new student and/or parent, in consultation with the instructor, chooses to withdraw from the DAC program after the first lesson, they must contact the DAC School at 919-560-2726 no later than three days after the first lesson. New students who choose to withdraw from the program at this time will receive refund of the semester tuition, less the first lesson fee and the $25 withdrawal fee. CONTINUING STUDENTS- Continuing students in the DAC Music Lesson Program must register each semester with DAC prior to beginning the new semester of lessons. At registration time, the student or parent must fill out the registration form, provide updated emergency contact information, sign the program waiver, indicate continuing instructor, and make full semester payment or select payment plan. Andrew Goodridge was a life-long lover of the arts - as an all-state trombonist in his Connecticut high school, as a graduate of Northwestern University with a degree in English and Poetry, as a published poet in North Carolina, and as an amateur actor here in Durham. His love of children and his joy and exuberance in life and the creative process make DAC a natural place to carry on his legacy. The Fund, created in his memory to support the DAC School Scholarship program, is a gift from his parents, Jane and George, and his sisters, Ellen and Carolyn. Additional contributions to this fund are always welcome. Please contact the School Office at (919) 560-2726 to receive a scholarship application and learn more. STUDENT RECITALS - Each instructor arranges for one or more student recitals per year that are held at DAC. All students have the opportunity to participate and share what they have learned with family and friends.
