Cente-A. Northwest Zone Meeting Convention, Veranda 8 Bloomfngton, MN Caturday, September 26, 1992 Zone Representative - Kathrine J. Casey Recorder - Elin Zander Representatives were: Inland Empire Montana Carolyn Kent Jeanne Ensian El in ~ander Dave Zander Oregon Roy Abramowitz Pam Himstreet Ginger Pierson Sandi Rousseau John Zel l Pacific Northwest Kathy Casey Zena Herrmann Jan Kavadas Jane Moore Hugh Moore Frank Newquist Walt Reid MINUTES: The minutes of the last meeting were approved as corrected: Add Pam Himstreet to the list of cenvention delegates from Oregon, and spell Elin correctly.. AWARDS: John Zell (Oregon) has a large inventory of Region XI1 medals. Those medals will be sold at the Northwest Zone short course meter championships, November 7-8. in Portland. Oregon. A committee was appointed to draft a new Northwest Zone Awards policy and discuss new awards designs/ideas: Pam Himstreet (Oregon, Chair, Zena Herrmann (PNA), Steve Holloway (Montana), and Carolyn Kent (Inland Empire). The committee asked for a consensus of those present. Delegates at this time felt the meet director of each zone championship meet should choose and purchase meet awards. -ZONE CHAMPIONSHIP - MEETS: - - Short course meter - November 7-8, 1992, Portland State University.. Long course - July 24-25, 1993, Mt. Hood Community College, Gresham, Oregon. The meet will start late on Saturdav and run all dav Sunday. Due to the 1 1/3 day format (pool availability), the order of events may vary slightly from the published championship order of events. C. Short course yard - April 23-25, 1993, Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Utah is interested in hosting a zone championship meet at Steiner Aquatic Center in Salt Lake City. Due to the geographic size of our zone. the group discussed hosting zone championship meets at three separate sites (the three areas would be: Alaska, Montana/Utah/Snake River, and Inland Empire/Paciiic Northwest/Oregon) at about the same time and compiling the results for a truer "ione.championship meet". The group unanimouslr approved trying the idea by compiling the results of the Montana State meet (April 17-18), the Alaska State meet (Feb. 19-20), and a Utah/Snake River meet for 1993 short course yard zone results. The group agreed that it could possibly involve four meets this time. Walt Reid agreed to compile the results. Kathy Casey and Jeanne Ensign will contact Alaska. Snake River, and Utah regarding this concept. For swimmers who attend more than one designated zone championship meet, only the results from the meet in that swimmer's local area will be included in the combined results. RECORDS: Each LMSC received the zone long course meter records. Oregon's 1991 short course meter records need to be included in the zone records. OPEN WATER SWIMS: Inland Empire plans to schedule a ane-mile swim in Lake iueur ail 'Alene the day before the Fan Lake swim (choice of i 1/2 or 3 miles) possibly e last weekend in July (the weekend after the Northwest Zone long course championship meet].

1U uu: omin in at ions for USMS officers are due to Betsy Durrant by February 28, 1993. Nomination procedures were reviewed by Kathy Casey. Potential nominees were discussed. During the nomination process, Kathy wi l l send ballots I isting ti. potential candidates to Northwest zone delegates asking for their votes. She will use delegates' input in the Zone/Nominating Committee nomination process. 8. Important meet dates were submitted for the 1993 USMS Planner by Inland Empire, PNA. Oregon, Montana, and Alaska. Kathy will ask Snake Ris?er and Utah for meet dates. C. The Ransom Arthur Award will be presented to Walt Reid tonight zt the USAS banquet. In the November zone newsletter Kathy will remind delegates to submit nominations for the next Ransom Arthur Award, so they can coordinate their nominations. D. Other nominations to consider in the next year are: zone representative, Coach of the Year. and Ransom Arthur Award. ZONE SOCIALS: The current format is fine (as long as there are chocolate chip cookies!). ZONE REP: In response to Kathy's question regarding continuing her term of office, the group voted to retain Kathy Casey as Northwest Zone Representative for the next year (pending the reappearance of chocolate chip cookies at zone socials). PROPOSED RULE CHANGES: were discussed. ZONE FUNDS: Regarding a proposal to add a surcharge to zone championship meet entry fees to help defray expenses incurred by the zone rep, a committee was appointed to investigate the establishment of a "zone fund", its administrat, and the purposes for which such a fund might be used: David Zander (Inland Y Empire) Chair. Roy Abramowitz (Oregon), Hugh Moore (PNA), and Jeanne Ensign (Montana). RECORDER: A big "Thank you!" goes to Elin Zander for recording the minutes of this meeting. Thanks, Elin! Respectfully submitted, " Kathrine J. Casey An addendum to the minutes will be published with the next zone newsletter detailing responses from Alaska, Montana, Snake River, and Utah.
