Orange Coast College Spanish 180 T, Th Syllabus Instructor: Jeff Brown Office: Lit. and Lang. 207 Office Hours: T, Th 2.30-4.30 pm Telephone: Voice mail (714) 432-5046 E-mail jbrown@occ.cccd.edu (I prefer emails) Website: http://spanishclass.iscool.net (no www) or http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown Text: Dos Mundos En Breve (7 th. Ed.) by Terrell, Andrade, Egasse, Muñoz. The main focus of Spanish 180 is on listening and speaking with reading and writing as supporting skills. Content areas include: expressions relating to daily life, environment, routine activities, and descriptions of people and places. Vocabulary will include simple greetings, leave takings, courtesy expressions, family members, numbers, time, dates, weather, colors, and basic objects in the immediate environment. You will be able to demonstrate the ability to comprehend and produce simple sentences dealing with schedules, addresses, telephone numbers, weather reports, short information articles, signs, and postcards. You will also learn about various aspects of Hispanic cultures. In addition, the course and the text are based on the Natural Approach to foreign language acquisition. That is, you will be acquiring language in the classroom, as opposed to learning, much like a child learns a first language. Classroom time will NOT be spent doing grammar exercises, drills, or lengthy grammar explanations. If you would like additional grammar help or instruction, feel free to see me during office hours. EXAMS We will cover Pasos A-C and Capítulo 1-Capítulo 5. There will be 3 (three) exams and a final. The lowest exam score will be dropped and, therefore, will not count. The final will be cumulative (from Paso A Capitolo 5) and will be administered during the last day of class. The final exam cannot be dropped! In addition, as part of the final exam, there is a final oral exam component. During this time, students will have 3-5 minutes to speak on given topic and then answer short follow up questions.
The oral exam will be given during the last week of class before the actual written final exam. Students will select one topic randomly (out of a bag). Topics will include: 1. Clothing 2. Physical descriptions (of self and friend(s)) 3. Family 4. Possessions (Car, bicycle, house, etc.) 5. Leisure time activities plus likes and dislikes 6. Plans (weekend and or after class) 7. Classes and major 8. Weather 9. Food and drink 10. Holidays 11. Daily routine (Getting up, brushing teeth, showering, breakfast, etc.) 12. Abilities (What you know how to do and don t know how to do.) 13. Jobs and careers Students will be graded on correct language use as well as ease of production. Students will be graded on a level of 1-50. Makeup exams will not be given without prior permission. Oral exams will be given on a first-come first-served basis. Students will be required to talk on more than one topic at a time. For example, students may pull a card which asks them to talk about family, leisure time and or weather. Students are encouraged to practice for the oral exams using the Entrevista sections in the textbook as a minimum, and practice with native speakers/friends outside of class. Here is a link for the rubric we will be using for the oral exam http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/dcabanel/rubric_speaking_wl_a180.pdf In the case that the oral exam has to be cancelled, the points for the oral exam will be added to that of the chapter/paso exams. I ve never had to cancel oral exams but just in case. Exams will be given on the following dates Exam 1, Pasos A, B, C Exam 2, Chapters 1 and 2 Exam 3, Chapters 3 and 4 Final exam Oral exam September 22, 2009 (Tuesday) October 20, 2009 (Tuesday) November 24, 2009 (Tuesday) December 17, 2009 (Thursday) December 15, 2009 (Tuesday) HOMEWORK
This course is worth 5 (five) units. The homework is appropriate for a 5-unit course. Plan to study 10 to 20 hours a week outside of class in order to keep up in class. Homework will be assigned from the Centro online workbook as well as from the text. In addition, students will have an ebook novel to read after the first exam. Questions from the ebook will appear on exams 2 and 3. Yay. Ebook! Each Centro online workbook chapter and Paso is worth 10 points. Workbook assignments should be completed on or before the day of the related exam, midnight at the latest. But, don t wait. Haste makes waste! One Centro homework assignment will also be dropped. (Pasos A, B, and C are separate HW assignments. Only one can be dropped. They are not counted together.) Please click here for the instructions on how to register for Centro, including the course code: CLICK HERE FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON REGISTERING FOR THE CENTRO ONLINE WORKBOOK http://www.mhcentro.com/books?qbid=0.8233257601013523&sessionid=tfa10_1154 9860_3EHRDBGG_1350&type=16100&classId=-1&courseObjectId=745276 Each chapter and Paso contains grammar exercises, in blue pages, at the end of each chapter. Students need to read the blue pages, before class, and eventually complete the exercises that go with the blue pages. But, wait! First, you need to go to my OCC website, download a template of the questions, and then fill in the answer blanks. So, much of the writing has been done for you. Then, use a RED, GREEN, or PURPLE pen to correct your mistakes. The answers are all in the back of the book. Any HW that is not corrected with a colored pen will not be accepted. Textbook assignments are due the day of the corresponding exams. Late HW will be accepted but will be deducted 25%. Late HW will not be accepted if it is more then one class period late. Each chapter or Paso s HW is worth 12.5 pts. each. If there is anything you don t understand, please see me, before class, during class, after class, or during office hours and we will go over it together.. CLICK HERE TO ACCESS THE INSTRUCTIONS AND TEMPLATES FOR THE BLUE PAGES http://faculty.orangecoastcollege.edu/dcabanel/clase/tareas/180/ Spanish Dictionary One of the requirements of this class is that you have a Spanish-English dictionary. In fact, it s so so so very important, it s worth 15 points or 1.5% of your grade. I recommend buying a good Spanish dictionary and spending about $5.00. Students have until the first exam to get a dictionary. I will check for dictionaries on that day. If you don t have on that day, you ll have to go to the bookstore and buy one.
Oral practice/spanish interviews. This semester, you get to interview 6 Spanish speakers for 15 minutes or more. Yay! You will be given a form to fill out when you meet with your Spanish speaking friend. You can talk about anything you like and for as long as you want. The real objective of this exercise is to get you to meet and hang out with people who speak Spanish. If you want to be fluent, make friends who speak Spanish and practice as much as possible. You can get extra credit for interviewing other Spanish speakers, but the extra credit will only be in your head. Yay. Two forms are due on the day of each exam. Late interviews/practice will be accepted but will be deducted 25%. Late HW will not be accepted if it is more than one period late. CLICK HERE FOR INTERVIEW FORMS: http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/entrevistas.pdf ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION Attendance is very important. Good attendance, together with your preparation and participation in class will be or 20% of your grade. Beginning with your third absence, a penalty of 10 pts out of a total 100 points or -2% of your final grade will be deducted per absence regardless of the reason for the absence. 3 tardies = 1 absence! After the 6 th tardy, each tardy will be -5 pts or ½ an absence. Students may leave early two (2) times. If a student leaves early and does not have any early outs left, he/she will be marked absent. Please check with me first if you would like to use an early out to find out if you have any left. It is the student s responsibility to notify me if he/she comes tardy. If you d like to take and early out, simply sign out using the clipboard available at the front of the classroom. Students who arrive tardy and don t remind me will be marked absent. MORE LISTENING PRACTICE Besides doing the online workbook, I encourage all students to make cassette tapes and or CDs to listen to at home or in the car. (This works. Believe me!!) You may also access the LABORATORY AUDIO PROGRAM within each Paso or Capítulo OR from the DOS MUNDOS website at www.mhhe.com/dosmundos7 (student edition). Plus, many podcasts are now available that include Spanish lessons. Check it out!!! Unbelievable, yes! Load your ipod with Spanish! Cool! Wow! EVALUATION & ASSESSMENT Your grade will be based on the following criteria:
Chapter/Paso exams* 40% Class preparation/participation/ attendance 20 Centro workbook assignments* 15 Final exam 10 Textbook assignments 6 Oral exam 5 Essays and Interviews 3 Spanish Dictionary 1 Total 100% *Can drop one 90-100% = A 80-89 = B 70-79 = C 60-69 = D 0-59 = F Cell phones and Laptop computers Cell phones are to be set to "Silent" or powered off during class. Do not have your cell phones out at all during class. Students who are caught texting or reading texts during class will lose 2.5 points, per infraction, deducted from their daily attendance/participation grade. (4 infractions equals one missed day of attendance. Ouch!) The mature thing to do is: Simply go outside, power up, and fire away. It s not a problem. Cool. Thanks. Also, please do not have computers out during the classroom. Once again, the laptop out on my desk pretending I m taking notes epidemic has gotten way out of hand. Please do not take your laptop out during class. English in the classroom This is a Spanish only classroom. Students are required to speak Spanish 100% of the time, except during the last 10 minutes of class, during which you will be allowed to ask questions in English. Students who speak English will lose points. Splangish is not permitted. If you must draw pictures to get your point across, that s perfectly fine. If you d like to come up to the board and draw, that s also ok. If we have to stop so you can look up a word in a dictionary, that s perfectly fine. (Take your time. Just hurry up!) Assume at all times that we don t understand English; as if you were traveling in your favorite Spanish speaking country, like (insert favorite country here.) Students who speak English will lose 1 pt from their 10 point daily participation grade. Ouch! 10

Email etiquette If you email me, please include your full name (First and last) plus which class and hour you are in. Remember, I teach 3 courses, two of which are the same course. Plus, I often have 150+ students, many of which often have the same first name. Bad example: Hola Jeff. This is Julio from Spanish 180. When is the next exam? Good example: Hola Jeff. This is Julio Genter from your T, Th 2.30 4.45 pm Spanish 180 course. When is the next exam? Julio Genter Note that in the first (bad) example, Julio didn t leave his last name or tell me which class (day and hour) he was in. In the good example, Julio remembered to give me his last name, plus he told me the hour and day of the class. Cool. Additional practice activities and suggested study aids Dos Mundos Website (www.mhhe.com/dosmundos7) under student edition Suggested texts: 501 Spanish verbs, and English Grammar for Students of Spanish (available at the bookstore). Drop Date If you need to drop the course, the last day to drop is: Nov. 21, 2009 It is the student s responsibility to drop the course if need be, and not that of the instructor. HAVE FUN AND BE CREATIVE! Practice! Practice! Practice! *Some items may be changed or revised as need be. Reminder Beginning with your third absence, a penalty of 10 pts out of a total 100 points or -2% of your final grade will be deducted per absence regardless of the reason for the absence. 3 tardies = 1 absence! After the 6 th tardy, each tardy will be -5 pts or ½ an absence.
SPECIAL NOTE FOR FALL 2009: We re expecting an especially bad flu season, complicated by the H1N1 ( Swine ) Flu virus. OCC encourages anyone showing symptoms of H1N1 Flu to stay away from others, particularly those at risk (babies and young children, pregnant women, older individuals, any other immunocompromised persons). If you believe that you may have the H1N1 Flu, do not come to class! Instead, go directly to OCC s Student Health Center (these services are covered by your registration fees). They will evaluate your condition. If, on their advice, you need to go home, they will give you a written form indicating how long you should stay at home. Bring this form when you return to class, and any absence supported by the written authorization will NOT count as one of your two allotted absences. (If you prefer to see your own doctor, you may do so; but you must also get a written authorization for missing class). Whether you go to the OCC Student Health Center or to your own doctor, you must do it before you miss class (or, during the missed class). Do NOT miss class and then go later to get authorization. If you go to the Student Health Center and they judge that you can come to class, and you choose not to, the absence will count as one of your two allotted absences. Please review the following two documents about H1N1, and remember: always cough or sneeze into the bend of your elbow, and wash your hands, wash your hands, lávate las manos! - http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/dcabanel/h1n1_brochure.pdf - http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/dcabanel/h1n1_slides.pptx Student learning outcomes for Spanish 180: The student will be able to: 1. Recognize and produce the Spanish language at the high-beginning level in the four primary areas of communication: listening, speaking, reading and writing. 2. Demonstrate a better understanding and appreciation of the cultures related to the Spanish language by comparing and contrasting them with the students own culture(s). 3. Use current technologies to further develop their language and cultural competencies.
