If the writer treats with a subject that is current at the time f his writing ten chances t ne it will be ld hat by the time f its appearing in print and he must therefre cnfine his remarks t n-ging tpics r run the risk f having t eat his wrds in cnsequence f subsequent develpments having caught up with him befre his article appears. Editrs take a pr view f their cntributrs asking fr their articles back tr amending the day befre a magazine is due t g t press. I have stuck my neck ut n a few ccasins and had my head chpped ff - r partly chpped ff - by events which ensued between writing and publicatin. Last mnth in the NEWSLETTER was ne f these. Subsequent t my writing abut the blcking f jbs fr ur Graduates by the Natinal Teachers a cmprmise was cme t by allwing thse already' chsen fr jbs t attend The Teacher Training lleges fr a year befre taking up wrk. Big Deal! It des nthing t imprve class. numbers in the present year and damn little fr brtherly lve. It des nt tempt me t ask the Editr t amend anything that I wrte DY Lunge Bar,.I.E. Bus Stp. At last, as I write, the Gvernment has annunced its -intentin t intrduce a bill fr the ablitin f existing grund rents. I see sme danger there. If we, in the New Estates, buyut ur grund rents, wh is ging t finish these estates where the develpers have gne int liquidatin r bankruptcy? D we als buy that liability? It is pssible, f curse that the bill will cver such a cntingency but the White Paper nt having yet been published it is nt pssible t tell. If I might make the sugestin t ur mmunity uncil it is smething they might actively pursue with whatever similar bdies they are in tuch r with ut lcal T.Ds. t ensure that the residents are nt left hlding the baby if they take up the ptin t purchase. T expect the unty uncil t d anything if the matter is nt cvered in the bill wuld indeed be a frlrn hpe. Exist. ing cnditins in these estates wuld deter any redisent frm wishing t wn the land n which his huse stands and the N 'Rent ampaign culd g n int the new century as a result. Which brings me, finally, t the mmunity uncil itself. Is it hiding its light under a bushel r is it anther "talking shp"? uld we be allwed t knw what it has achieved - ther than was already being dne by ther actin grups and taken ver -. since its inceptin? And when I say "achieved" I mean dne - FOR BEST DRINKS AND DELIIOUS PUB GRUB cmpleted - finished withut any hedging r side tracking r circumlcutin. Let's have a list in next mnth's NEWSLETTER. (I knw the Editr wn't like that last paragraph. but being a fair man I bet. yu he prints it! ) L DEFENE NOTES: ASUALTY UNIT:- It is hped t cmmence Unit meeting n Tuesday 4th January when it is hped t see all Unit members cmmencing at 8.30 p.m. in the I..A. [ammunitv [a neil Dews Affairs in the uncil have been rather quit f late mainly due t the Festival peris. That is nt t say that nthing is happening but rather that members naturally devte a gd deal f time, at this time f the year t their families. A meeting which was rganised with ther mmunity uncils regardingthe transprt f the hemical ARYLIN thrugh Nrth Kildare was nt very successful. Apparently thers d nt view this as seriusly as d we. We will cntinue t prtest with the authrities n yur behalf in this matter fr as far as we can ascertainther:e is n verall plan in existence t deal with this chemical shuld there be an accident. The reasn fr this is that it is practically impssible t cntain nce a spillage has ccurred and the gas is deadly pisnus and cannt be cmbated by masks. On a happier nte we ffer ur cngratulatins t r. O KILDARE +. l il KARE The mmittee wuld like t thank sincerely the cmmunity and surrunding area fr their magnificent supprt at the tty Fair' and Sale during December. A special wrd f thanks t the Sisters f the Presentatin nvent fr their genersity, time, gifts, and effrt. A wrd f thanks t ichael O'Reilly, fr giving us Turkeys, Je Buckley fr Hams and ther gifts, and t Patrick Lavin, yglare fr his help. We were als very thankful t the varius peple wh gave up their free time t help us during the day, namely Paddy Desmnd, r. & rs. We take this pprtunity t wish them all a Happy and Prsperus New Year. Als sincere thanks t Snny Knwles and the anagement & STAFF f LEAF f Kilcck fr their generus dnatins. ' In a University twn such as urs, it is almst impssible, during the Academic Year, at least, t get away frm students, that is, f curse, if we want t get away frm them. The wrd 'Student' can smetimes be a highly emtive wrd t sme, a very attractive wrd t thers r, t the majrity perhaps, a very rdinary wrd. A very few f the twnspeple have run ful f a student r tw and the wrd is inclined t ruse the bld pressure. We are inclined t hear a lt f these type f student. On the ther hand sme have had a very pleasant assciatin with students and we d nt hear enugh f these. But t the majrity the wrd 'student' ruses little r n emtin whatever and these peple are nt sufficiently infrmed f the 'real student', nr, perhaps are the students sufficiently infrmed f the 'real twnspeple'. What it really bils dwn t is that there shuld be quite a lt mre cntact between student and twnspersn. Just t keep matters in prper perspectin, fr less well infrmed, ur student friends have made very cnsiderable mark n the twn since the cllege has been pened up, and we are smetimes inclined t verlk this. They have put in endless wrk rganising ur yung peple, by way f yuth clubs, Scuts, play grups, etc. and, it is t ur discredit that we have nt helped sufficiently in this wrk. Students have als, frm the very first, taken a keen interest in ur lder citizens and have helped very cnsiderable with the entertainments and fund raising etc. re imprtant still they have rganized regular visits t elderly peple in their hmes and have dne endless wrk fr them. Students als have subscribed very substantially t charitable wrk in the twn and have actively assisted thse in distress. This is practically unknwn in the twn and it is great credit t these yung peple that they have handled this wrk in' a truely christian manner. Amng the ther cntributins f the students t ur cmmunity are: as isting 'slw learners' in ur schls, giving grinds t ur primary and secndary pupils, giving sprts instructins, baby sitting etc. We have' ly scratched the surface here f the, varius ways in which students have enriched ur cmmunity and have unfrtunately been taken fr granted by us. It is nt t ften either that any f us parade the student virtues whilst the vices f the few are frequently paraded. It is hped that students past and present will accept this as an acknwledgement f ur thanks t them. T cmpliment what they have already dne, we understand that the Student Unin are anxius t take an even mre active interest in the twn and a representative f the Unin sits n the mmunity uncil. It is expected we shall be hearing alt mre in the P. L SUGGESTIONS Tel. 8606 AYNOOTH Nw that the "THING" in the square is being given an imprved appearance with Seats, Lights, Kerbing-paving stnes etc., surely it is nw time t give it a name ther than the "THING" D.J.L. TIDY TOWNS OPETITION Having received gd marks in the Tidy Twns mpetitin f 1977, this wuld be a very gd time t start imprvements in the twn and husing estates with a view t imprving ur psitin in the 1978 mpetitin. t the Editr Dear Editr, I wuld like t remind yur readers f the current wave f tree destructin which is taking place in artn, which shuld be a matter f cncern t us all. Since the change f wnership f this estate the anniliatin f trees particularly n the parklands has been,'>tepped up and nw what was nce the finest parks in these islands is almst ruined. The: e is little need t remind aynth peple f hw artn was s carefully created, the length f time it tk t pssess a natural beauty which mst f ur parents had such frtune t witness. Even up t recently artn shwed shadws f its frmer glry. Hwever all is nt lst and immediate actin is necessary t prevent further destructin and cmmence restratin. This appears a tall rder but I believe, we shuld nt let the present situatin cntinue withut taking sme actin. shuld never have been artn subject t cmmea::ial explitatin it shuld have been purchased by the Gvernment fr use as a Natinal Park which is becming mre necessary with current husing prgramme in the districts f Leixlip, elbridge & aynth. Few f us agree with the plitical situatin which brught artn int existance but this shuld be n excuse t aiiw such landscaping t disappear. Even in Sviet Russia palaces and estates f imperial days are preserved as places f recreatin fr the peple. Perhaps actin thrugh the mmunity uncil wuld be apprpriate, in any event let us nt be adjudged acquiescence by psterity while artn passed int blivin. Peter Nevin, B arrgstwn, aynth. V.D. t his many friends in aynth. Dear Old Flks, & mmittee embers, P.O.Bx 107 WEWAK E.S.P. nd Dec. '77 Here I am again writing t yu frm my parish f Bram, n the utskirts f Wewak. It is a great pleasure t be in cntact with yu again thrugh this letter. Hw have things been fr yu during the year which has just gne by? I hpe well. Fr mysehf,,with little variatin in the seasns, it is hard t believe that a whle year has gne by since I came here. Since the 8th September, the Anniversary f my departure frm my hme in Ireland, I have been in my wn parish huse in Bram. I am enjying the huse very much, as I can meet peple there, because in my parish where peple can see and meet me and because I can rest and relax in my wn way when I cme hme frm a day ut in the bush. Right nw, I am really very happily invlved in my wrk and enjying it. Right nw, I am invlved in visiting every single village and cmpund t hld a Bible Service r say a ass in preparatin fr hristmas. Anther interesting develpment which I have discvered i myself is that I have becme mre utging in sme f the villages ere there are thse new grups such as the Assemb.lies f Gd, the Jehvah's and s n. One f the villages in my parish, Sawarin, was frmerly all athlic. Nw it is mstly Jehvah. Because f the cnfusin this change brught t the peple many are nw nthing. It is nw my hpe t be able t bring the majrity f them back t ur hurch. As a pastr, I feel it is my duty t g and 'infrm' the peple abut the hurch which they really belng t, thrugh Baptism and which they left because f cnfusin. I had a talk with ne f the Jehvah's last week and I was surprised by his message. Renewal is the vital task everywhere in the hurch here. Educatin t! Befre, in sme places, peple jined these new hurches because they were prmised smething. It is well knwn that A. f G's attract peple with rides in lrries and free bks, and such things. ' Anyway, please remember this wrk in yur prayers and masses. During the past year I have remained in excellent cnditin. I am as white as yu always knew me. ming t the trpics des nt seem t guarantee a nice brwn clur. Even when I g t swim at Wrn beach, whre the Japa,.nese surrendered after the war I dn't even get sunburnt. T my delight I dn't have any prblems here with the weather. Right nw, we are in s called rainy Seasn, which mean that - every s ften we get cludy days. This means cl days and smetimes nice winds. These are always fllwed by sunny days and s there is always variety. The fd t is agreeable here. In fact, in twn nw I see that there are Australian turkeys n abut every meat shelf. Plum puddings are als available in tins while ne shp sells Erin Fds & sups, and vegetables. Amng sme f my.pleasant diversins here are my visits t Irish Sisters and their cmmunities. Here in Wewak itself, we have abut fur Irish sisters f ercy and ne Francisan issinary f ary. In Ireland, they are based in Lughglynn,. Rscmmn. There are thers arund the discese t. Only last week a new F. arrived frm Rialt, t wrk in anther big twn called Lae. Unfrtunately, just the ther day ne f my gd friends, Sr. ary Scanln, frm Kerry, went altgether t Australis. In January Sr. Abina will g n transfer t Australia. She by the way has been the first persn frm Papua New Guinea t visit my hme and family, since I came here. She is frm. rk. Right nw as I write t yu, there is anther priest at hme in Killarney frm ur neighburing discese f Aitap'e. He is Fr. Dennis Dennehy frm Artigallivan. He brught sme mail fr my family and fr tw friends in Killarney s I hpe that smebdy will, meet him. I must add that I have n shrtage f friends amng the peple here t. It is interesting t get t knw the lcal teachers, the members f the civil servants and such peple. One f the things which might surprise yu abut the peple here is that there is a very strng reginalism in the untry. The peple frm the East Sepik; Wewak, have n<;>thing in cmmn with the peple frm the muntains and the 16 17.

Fr. Dunne's letter cntinued islands and s they are nt always happy t see these utsiders getting wrk in their prvince. One f the big jbs fr the cuntry and the gvernment here is t hld all these different peple tgether in 'Papua New Guinea'. Recently, I saw and heard the P.. ichael Smare. He was addressing the graduate teachers frm all ver PNG, wh were getting diplmas frm the Discesan 'Kaindi T.T.. ' During the past few mnths the peple f my parish have brught a lvely new altar fr the hurch. This was made pssible by shwing films n Sunday nights against the wall f my huse. The peple als bught sme nice clth which we hung up behind the altar fr ur nfirmatins. Our next 'big' item is ging t be the icrphne set up which is vital since the hurch is built acrss the rad frm the il fired electricity pwer statin. an yu imagine trying t make yurself heard abve that nise? Anther prject which I am trying t get ff the grund is a Yuth lub. But finding the peple with the dedicatin and tle ability is hard. One f the big tasks f ev,erybdy in the cuntry nw is t help the many pupils wh have had t leave schl after primary schl. Example: In y andi village schl, there are 8 pupils in the 6th class. Only 7 f them can g n t high schl. 1 must leave. They will be lucky t find mre educatin smewhere else nw. They culd becme the trublemakers f tmrrw s everybdy is being encuraged t help in whatever way they can t make these children f sciety. There are s many things t d... if I nly had time! Nw. an I ask yu a favur? uld I ask yu t send me sme simple religius magazines, such as the Wrd, essenger, Reality, & especially TS pamplets fr the parish here? Sme little hly pictures wuld be gd t. Nw, I am nly asking fr yur help if yu see sme ld editins f these things arund the place. Well, at this pint I will sign ff, s that there will be sme space left fr writing a persnal nte t yu.
