1. Do not fall behind. It is very easy, since online classes are so flexible, to get behind in your work. Do not let this happen. You should aim to complete 1 chapter approximately every week. 2. Be self-motivated. In this class, all of the assigned work will be available online. This is one of the advantages of a class with extensive content available online, but it is also one of the reasons that you must be selfmotivated in order to be successful in the course. 3. You must be active on the course website. This includes participating in discussions when assigned, and responding to the posts of other students. If you do not log on to the course on TSTC Moodle and participate in the introductory activities and attend class during the first week of class, you will be considered a NO SHOW for the course. 4. Submit your assignments on time. 5. Contact your instructor if you have any questions about anything. I am here to Guide you through the course. There is no such thing as a dumb question, please ask for clarification as needed and don t wait until it is late in the semester to ask for help Office Hours (Virtual): I will have virtual office hours during my regular office hours during the semester. Virtual appointments can be set, be must be set up via by Moodle message or email. Assignments & Due Dates DUE DATES: All work will be completed and turned in on or before the date specified. All deadlines are Central Standard Time (CST). Late assignments are accepted after due date but 10 points are deducted every day after due date with two days maximum allowed. After second day late work will not be not accepted and received a grade of zero (0) Technical difficulties do not constitute an extenuating circumstance. Online course content for classes require technology to be used and should not be used as an excuse to justify why assignments are being submitted late. Online discussions, quizzes and assignments will deactivate if they are not completed by the appropriate deadline. To give you ample time to complete assignments, unit/chapter assignments and discussions are usually due at the end of the week (midnight on Sunday). *Helpful hint* Complete your assignments and save them in a folder so that you can later upload this zipped file with all your project files. When it is time to submit your assignments remember that you must submit them as instructed in the assignment POFI 1349 Spring 2015 Course Syllabus Page 7

usually files enclosed in a zipped (compress) folder. Assignments submitted in an incorrect format will receive a grade of zero. All completed assignments will be submitted through the assignment upload area link for the given assignment not to be e-mailed to instructor, unless instructor advises to send by email. EXAMS/QUIZZES Exams - Only students with valid excuses and at the discretion of the instructor, will be allowed to make up exams. It is the responsibility of each student who has a valid excuse to communicate and coordinate with the instructor to take the exam; failure to make-up a test will result in a grade of zero (0). All exams/quizzes are timed. Quizzes will NOT be allowed to be made up. Proctored performance exams Testing Center Student will need to register with a TSTC Testing Center on our Harlingen campus to arrange to take the required proctored exam at our testing center. Become familiar with this process. Access the following link for more information regarding proctored testing required for this online course and scheduling. TSTC Online Student Support Students that do not reside in the area need to plan ahead and coordinate with the Online Learning Office. Visit the TSTC OL Proctored Testing website for more information. Please check the calendar for the days that the proctored exams are held! You only come to a testing center three times for at least two hours each visit during the entire semester! Please plan ahead! Tests are held after chapters 1-3, Chapters 4-6, and Final Exam (Chapters 7-9) Course Participation Class participation is an integral part of this course. Students earn their grade by participating in class by completing daily assignments, completing tests, submitting work as per due dates/times, and completing any other assignments required by your Instructor. A failing grade can result in the failure of one, several, or all of the areas described above. Academic Dishonesty Intellectual honesty is fundamental to scholarship. Accordingly, the college views plagiarism or cheating of any kind in academic work as among the most serious offenses that a student can commit. Academic dishonesty can result in a grade of F or 0 for the particular test or assignment involved. A student POFI 1349 Spring 2015 Course Syllabus Page 8

wishing to contest this ruling must do so within one (1) week after return of graded papers. 1) Plagiarism occurs when one presents work which is taken from another person who is not given due credit. a) You are providing information that your reader may use in seeking further knowledge on your topic, or on a subtopic or peripheral topic that you have treated only briefly. b) You are providing a means whereby another person may verify the accuracy of your use of sources. c) Copying files from a student s storage device and submitting your work as original work. ESTABLISHING A SAFE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT Learning occurs in a safe classroom environment, and a safe environment for learning allows individual and group differences and encourages engaged honest discussions where everyone feels comfortable to share and explore ideas. In the course of class discussions, it is quite possible that disagreements will arise. Disagreements are welcomed in the spirit of critical academic and technical exchange, however it is important to be respectful of others point of view, whether you agree with them or not. TSTC will not tolerate derogatory comments based on race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality NETIQUETTE: The following are general rules of netiquette; some are excerpted from Netiquette by Virginia Shea. You are expected to abide by these rules in this course. 1. Even though you are speaking to someone online-they are a human being. Think about how and what you are saying. Ask yourself whether you would speak to a person in this manner if you were face-to-face. 2. Pay attention to spelling and grammar. Others are reading your work: do not make it difficult for them by using poor spelling and grammar. In addition, there is no place for inappropriate language in this course. 3. Be willing to share your knowledge with others. When it comes to discussion boards post comments in a timely manner. Other course members may be waiting for you so they can post replies or finish an assignment do not make them wait until the deadline. This is not fair and also shows that you are not setting side appropriate time for your coursework. Copyright Statement The materials used in the course [textbooks, handouts, media files (podcast, MP3, Videos, RSS (Feeds), and all instructional resources on the colleges Learning Management System (Moodle)] are intended for use only by students registered and POFI 1349 Spring 2015 Course Syllabus Page 9

COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR INSTRUCTOR (MyMail E-mail System) All official college E-mail to students is sent through MyMail http://mymail.tstc.edu/, the official student e-mail system at TSTC Harlingen. When communicating with instructors and/or employees of the college, you are required to use your TSTC MyMail student e- mail address. For technical support please contact the Helpdesk at (800) 592-8784 or tstchelpdesk@tstc.edu EMERGENCY/SAFETY In the event of an emergency, students should familiarize themselves with building and classrooms emergency exits/evacuation routes and be able to locate the nearest fire extinguisher. When an emergency alarm is activated, students should immediately leave the classroom, exit the building, and go to a designated safe area until clearance is given to go back into the building. Students should also register and be familiar with the Emergency Notification System. SPECIAL NOTES 1. TSTC Harlingen faculty, staff, and students are asked to report all threats, perceived or real, immediately to College Police located in the Auxiliary Building. If the threat is imminent, the College Police emergency phone line at 364-4234 or 9-911 should be called. College Police will then coordinate the proper response in accordance with State and federal laws and TSTC System/College rules and regulations. 2. It is the student s responsibility to withdraw from the course by the published deadline or receive a grade of F. According to TSTC policy, instructors are not allowed to drop students. NOTE: Any changes to this syllabus will be provided in writing to the student and updated on all posted locations (HB 2504, course Moodle sites, building offices, etc.). Your instructor may have additional requirements, in addition to this syllabus, which will be discussed in class or posted on the Course website. These additional requirements, DO NOT cancel any information or regulations within this syllabus; rather, they provide additional detail and/or enhance this syllabus.
