V. Notable Achievements for SOCIOLOGY AND PHILOSOPHY Rank Rank Rank Med Med Med Quarterly emails were sent from SAP Dept. Chair Gallarde to all faculty (including adjuncts) to communicate HSS Division and SAP Dept matters. Faculty members Gallarde and Diem continued to work with HSS Asst Dean Velickovic to complete the proposal for both the AA-T in Sociology and the AA-T in Philosophy. Dept Chair created Faculty Packets with instructions and Deadlines for Book Orders, Evaluations, and Teaching Requests. Faculty members Rillorta, Hatch, and Gallarde served on the Scholarship committee. Faculty member Gallarde participated in the Faculty Mentor Program in Fall 2015. Dr. Rebecca Hatch continued working with undergraduate research by attending conferences for professional development, coordinating the annual research showcase and competition, and taking students to present their research at conference. Many department members attended conferences (including PSA, ASA, ISA) Sociologist Hatch s student Albert Pastro presented a paper at the University of North Carolina. Philosopher Charles Merward had 8 students writing a thesis defense paper that they will be presenting before a faculty panel. Sociologist Hatch and Philosopher Merward wrote guidelines on modalities of research. Sociologist Stewart Thomas attended a workshop in January sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health on communicating with people who have mental health issues. Philosopher Lane is spearheading a project to have written books transformed to audio books that can be downloaded to any electronic device. Philosopher Wolde-Yohannes book, Ethiopia: Creating a Culture of Progress, is in the process of being transformed to an audio book. Unit: Communication D. Med Med Sociologist Hatch coordinated the 6th Annual Research Showcase, Tuesday April 19 and 20. Sociologist Hatch and a student presenter attended the National Conference on Undergraduate Research; Professor Merward was especially helpful in prepping the student. Sociologist Stewart Thomas is on the Sexual Harassment and Abuse Committee (Title 9). She attended meetings over the winter break and throughout this semester. Philosophers McGruder, Wolde-Yohannes, Merward, Tircuit, and Curtis were present along with Chairperson Gallarde at a meeting with Ryan Nichols of CSUF to discuss transfer agreements The department reviewed and approved the philosophy brochure created by Philosopher Lane. The Human Trafficking Conference organized by Chairperson Gallarde was a success. Over 400 students attended. Philosopher McGruder sponsored a student, Alex Juarez, for the 20th Anniversary of the Million Man March. Sociologist Hatch worked with IRB on guidelines for the Soc norm breaking experiment. Rillorta and Diem were granted a sabbatical leave to work on various projects. Sociologist Hatch served as the faculty advisor for the Roosevelt Institute Network Sociologist Gallarde served as the faculty advisor for the Social and Political Awareness Club Sociologist Gallarde served on the Social Justice Task Force. Diem and Gallarde worked on the CI-D alignment for Phil 3.
