Citizens of other countries who are U.S. permanent residents or immigrants with green cards are not included in this report. Other category: Other category includes non-degree seeking visitors, USC Language Academy students, and students currently on Optional Practical Training (OPT) employment. Visitors: Visitors are students enrolled in classes but not in degree programs. Optional Practical Training (OPT): OPT is the category of graduates on F-1 student visas who are legally employable for 12 months following graduation. They remain under USC auspices for the purpose of maintaining their immigration status and for national reporting purposes. 1

Introduction The University of Southern California has a long history of enrolling students from around the world. For the past seven years, and for much of the past 20 years, USC has enrolled more international students than any other U.S. university. This tradition of a strong commitment to educating international students continued in the 2008-2009 academic year, with 5,919 students from 114 different countries attending USC. This report provides some information about USC s current international student population, along with comparative data from years past. Continuing a recent trend, the number of students from India, China and South Korea rose again this year. The largest increase among this group was for students from China, which showed an increase of 16% from Fall 2007 to Fall 2008. Students from the top ten places of origin make up nearly 79% of the university s international student population. (see p. 5, Table 2.1). Overall, in the past 15 years, USC s number of international students has risen 41% (see p. 4, Chart 1.5). Currently international students make up nearly 9% of the undergraduate population, over 26% of graduate students, and 17.5% of the total USC student population for Fall 2008 (see p. 8, Table 4.1 ). Most of the growth of this population in recent years has been at the Master s degree level, which rose by over 5% between 2007 and 2008 (see p. 9, Table 5.1). For undergraduate international students, the top major by far is Business Administration. For graduate students, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science are the top two fields of study (see p. 11, Table 6.2). Another interesting trend to note is the gender breakdown within the international student population. While male students remain the majority, the proportion of female students within the international community at USC has risen steadily but slowly over the past 30 years to the current figure of 38% (see p. 12, Chart 7.3). The information in this report was compiled by the Office of International Services (OIS), along with help from the Office of Academic Records and Registrar, and the USC Language Academy. Please direct all comments and inquiries to ois@usc.edu. 2
