IMPORTANCE OF HOME-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP Children learn best when parents and teachers work together to encourage and support them. High level of parental involvement improved pupil learning, attendance and behaviour. School alone cannot address all of a child s development needs. 12

CORE SUBJECT EXPECTATIONS 13

The Importance of Reading The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go. Dr Seuss

How you can help your child Go to the library together Have lots of books, magazines and newspapers in your home Allow your child to choose books to read and reread Read to and with your child (or, have your child read to you) Talk about the books and characters read Get them to read for 20 to 30 minutes at home every day

To inculcate good learning habits Show clear equations and workings.

To inculcate good learning habits Draw clear models and write matching statements. Anna has 3 times as much money as Belle. Belle has $10. How much money does Anna have? Anna Ben? Matching Statement 1 u $10 3 u 3 x $10 $10 = $30

To facilitate problem solving, Internalise multiplication table

1. Mini-Whiteboard, a suitable marker, duster 2. An Exercise Book Math working book (for class practices) 3. An Exercise Book Mental Sums 4. Scientific calculator, Ruler, Set Squares, Protractor 5. Math File (blue) Routine ( Stationery)

Why calculator? Use of Calculators in the Curriculum The introduction of calculators at Primary 5 and Primary 6 aims to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics at the primary level in two ways. First, calculators facilitate the use of more exploratory approaches in learning mathematical concepts, some of which may require repeated computations, or computations with large numbers or decimals. With a calculator, students can perform these tasks and better focus on discovering patterns and making generalisations without worrying about computational accuracy. Second, the use of calculators also enables teachers to use resources from everyday life, such as supermarket advertisements, to set real-life problems with real-life numbers that may be difficult for pupils to work with without a calculator. Pupils would hence be better able to see the connection between mathematics and the world around them. 26

Helping Your Child to Enjoy Science Exploring Science with Your Children Science is all around us and children are constantly observing their surroundings. Help your children make sense of the world around them by showing them science phenomena that occur in everyday activities. Check out some of these online educational resources which you can try out together with your children: http://www.science.edu.sg/resources/pages/scbresourceshome.aspx Try out these simple experiments with your children. http://www.scientificamerican.com/section.cfm?id=bring-science-home Look through this online repository for activities that explain simple science concepts. http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/subjects/z2pfb9q Watch video clips illustrating science concepts. http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/ Find interesting facts, videos, games and quizzes.

Helping Your Child to Enjoy Science Learning Science through Questioning Examples of living things around us Observing living things: An example of a living thing Fish Examples of questions How would you describe this animal? Which animal group does it belong to? What do fishes have in common? Engage your children by inviting them to ask questions or by asking them questions. They learn best this way! Sometimes, we may encounter challenging questions that you do not have an answer to. Don t be worried or afraid, we don t have to be a walking encyclopaedia to guide our children. Invite them to learn together. For example, you could say, That s an interesting question. Let s find out together! Acknowledge your children s efforts in asking questions and guide them as they look for an answer.
