San Antonio News Business Section 1 May 12, 2009 Section D Hard Work Leads to Success By Zachary Taylor Topic 1 1 Central Idea Intro. to Larry West Early years 2 Artist Larry West shows that with a good education and hard work you can make your artwork come alive. West is an artist who designs and makes glass art. He is a teacher, a business owner, and a father. He is also an inspiration to many young people with big dreams for their artwork. West was born on August 23, 1973, in Salem, Ohio. By the age of eight, he knew exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up. He wanted to make a living using art. West s parents always told him he had to stay in school and go to college. West recalls, There was never an option about going to college. become an art teacher and artist. One day in college, West heard about a class called Introduction to Glass Blowing. Even though this class was not a requirement for his teaching degree, he decided to enroll. The class changed him forever. West decided he wanted to be a glass artist. Glass art involves creating sculptures by forming and shaping glass with heat. Glass blowing brought together his love of vibrant color, design, and creativity in three-dimensional form. 6 3 West listened to his parents. He studied and practiced to improve his art skills. He worked hard in school and won many art contests. He also entered local and statewide contests in painting, pottery and drawing. He learned that he was most interested in art with bright color. 4 After high school, West went to college. He attended Kent State University to Larry West used bright colors to make this glass sculpture. 5 see Hard Work, page 2 Page 4 Fisher Reyna Education 2012 Solutions for Success Reading, Grade 5

Hard Work, cont. from page 1 Page 2 5 His interest in teaching art and his interest in glass art came together. His many years of practice and hard work started to pay off when he earned a scholarship to Pilchuck Glass Blowing School where he learned more about glass art. inspiration. Then, he makes a plan about the materials needed to create the sculpture. Next, he uses extreme heat and silica, a type of colored sand, to form the structure. Then he develops a steel structure to hold the glass art in place for display. 6 7 8 Since glass art involves materials and extreme heat, he had to be ready to teach more than art skills and creativity. He had to learn about safety and difficulties in working with this type of art. Glass art requires strict rules to avoid dangers from the materials and heat involved in the creation of the sculptures. After Pilchuck, he moved to San Antonio, Texas, to teach others about the art of glass blowing. In 2001, after teaching glass art for eight years in high school, West opened a glass blowing studio, Dragonfire Glass Studio. Operating his studio gave West the freedom to create glass art every day. He uses his knowledge in math, science, reading, and art to create his sculptures. Projects for his customers and students demand great imagination and knowledge. West describes his artwork as a process of many skills. First, he uses influences from the natural world, especially living things such as plants and animals, to get an idea. How things grow in real life gives him Dragonfire Glass Studio is a working studio and much more. In addition to the glass sculptures, Dragonfire offers glass blowing lessons, field trips, demonstrations, and entertainment for special events. There is a gallery where visitors can view art pieces created by West and other artists. Even though people may only stop by for a quick visit, West hopes they grasp his message about art, science, and real world beauty. The art shows beauty of the simple but best things in life. When West is not at the studio, he keeps busy. He likes to travel with his wife and son. He especially enjoys camping with his family. He likes to relax and play the guitar. West knows that he is a hero to young people who dream of being an artist. He tells them the same things he learned from his parents. West says, Study hard and get a good education. Keep your eyes wide open to all the different possibilities for art in the ever-changing but open world of today. 9 Dragonfire offers other services. 10 Hobbies 11 Photograph courtesy of RRR Photography Larry West designs and makes glass art. From his early years, he started getting a good education and training to be an artist. Then he opened Dragonfire Glass Studio where he creates glass art and offers many services.
