PERIYAR UNIVERSITY PROFILE Named after the renowned rationalist of the twentieth century, Thiru E.V. Ramasamy affectionately called Thanthai Periyar, Periyar University was established by the Periyar University Act, 1997 passed by the Tamil Nadu State Legislature. The long-felt need for a University in this area was thus fulfilled. The University has jurisdiction over four districts, viz., Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. Periyar University was established on Periyar s birthday-17 th September 1997. The University aims at developing knowledge in various fields to realize the maxim inscribed in the logo Arival Vilaiyum Ulagu (Wisdom Maketh the World). The University Grants Commission has granted 2f status in 1988 and 12(B) status in 2005 to the Periyar University. The University is reaccredited with A Grade by NAAC with CGPA 3.15 and it ranks the University at 47 th Place at National Level and 7 th at State Level. The twenty seven departments of the University offer Post Graduate and Research Programmes. Further the departments have been clustered into eight schools to promote inter-disciplinary research. Department of Education is clustered under School of Professional Studies. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Department of Education was started in the year 2005 with approval of UGC and SRC-NCTE. The department offers M.Ed., Programme which was recognized by National Council for Teacher Education Southern Regional Committee (F.SRO/NCTE/2006-2007/11863) and B.Ed Part Time Programme (SRO/NCTE/SRCAPP3427/B.Ed-Part Time/TN/2016-17/80978 dated 02/02/2016). The Department also offers M.Ed., M.Phil (FT/PT/Week-end) and Ph.D (FT/PT) and PG Diploma in e-content Development programmes and it has three fold functions viz., Teaching, Research and Extension activities. The Department library is equipped with more than 4000 books on different titles on education along with e-books, journals, magazines and dailies. The Department of education has established a language laboratory for both the language to develop language skills of the student. A psychology laboratory is equipped with more than 300 tools related to educational research. A Computer
laboratory is equipped with 40 computers with internet connectivity. Educational Technology laboratory is equipped with computers, LCD Projectors and OHP etc. The Department has smart classroom with modern teaching-learning facilities like multimedia, e-contents and Virtual learning contents. PROSPECTUS AND APPLICATION BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (B.Ed. PART-TIME PROGRAMME) 2016-2019 The Bachelor of Education (Part-Time), known as B.Ed., is a professional programme that prepares teachers for various levels of schooling namely, upper primary or middle level (classes VI-VIII), secondary level (classes IX X), and higher secondary level (classes XI-XII). The programme shall be offered in a staggered manner during a period of three years, combining face-to-face teaching with school internship and school-based activities. DURATION The B.Ed. (part-time) programme shall be of duration of three academic years, which can be completed in a maximum period of five years from the date of admission to the programme. MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION The medium of Instruction is both Tamil and English. The student teachers are allowed to prepare their assignments, practical records and the term examinations are either English or Tamil. ELIGIBILITY a) Upper Primary and Secondary Schools teachers who are in service as full time teacher for at least two years at the time of making application and who shall continue to be in service during the entire duration of the programme. The applicant shall be required to furnish a certificate to this effect from the Head of the school where he / she is employed. b) The school teachers with UG degree (10+2+3/4 Pattern) with 50% of marks / for SC & ST community 45% marks in the following subjects: Tamil, English, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Geo-Physics, Bio-Physics, Electronics, Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Botany, Environmental Science, Bio-Technology, Plant Biology, Zoology, Micro-Biology, History, Geography, Applied Geography, Computer Science, Computer Application and Information Technology.
