If Expand this assignment is clicked, any special instructions you entered are shown. Students need to click the Submit button. 8
Step 1 Students can upload a single file, for example, a word document or PowerPoint file. Alternatively, they can cut & paste text directly into a box. Normally, students will use the single file upload function. * All fields marked with a red asterisk need to be completed. The yellow box shows what file size and types Turnitin accepts. Students can browse their computer to find the relevant file. Click Upload. Step 2 Students are able to view their paper to ensure it is the correct file. NB Any formatting of the text will not show in this preview box. Click Submit. 9
Once Submit is clicked the following screen displays. This screen is classed as a digital receipt. An email is also sent to the students university email address confirming receipt at Turnitin. Students then click on Go to portfolio to access their Turnitin record for this assignment. The following screen will appear: A green dot illustrates that submission for the assignment is complete. Note the Resubmit button - this is because Point 4 Generate originality reports for student submissions (p6) the following option was chosen Immediately (Can overwrite reports until due date). This allows multiple submissions of assignments to Turnitin. First submissions are returned from Turnitin fairly quickly, however we advise students that 24 hours should be allowed for any resubmissions of amended work. This should be factored into their time management reaching the due date required. If students click on Show details they can see their originality report (if this has been enabled). If students wish to see their detailed originality report, they should double click the originality report box. 10
By default, the text of the essay will appear on the left hand side of the screen, and any matches will be highlighted in the relevant colour on right hand side of the screen. If you wish to see the original text (if available) you can click on the link on the right hand side of the screen under any areas of text which have been marked. Interpretation of originality reports The interpretation of originality reports is a difficult issue. No fixed acceptable figure has been set by the University of Cumbria. A high originality report percentage may not demonstrate that work has been plagiarised as long as the extracts used have been correctly acknowledged and referenced. It may demonstrate that students need to work on their writing style rather than be an instance of plagiarism. Further training in writing skills and referencing can be provided to students by LISS. Worth remembering: Turnitin searches online resources only - ebooks, ejournals and websites and does not search any items not currently digitally available. Please contact CDEPP if you need any advice with regard to the interpretation of Turnitin reports at cdepp@cumbria.ac.uk. 11
