ARTIST STATEMENT My mixed media work reflects my interest in knowledge and how it is gained or hidden; I am deeply interested in the natural world. These ideas are the conceptual concerns that guide my work. Formally, I am concerned most with color and surface texture achieved through layering of color and different materials. These materials include, among others, soil, plant materials, pastel chalks, ink paper, beads and anything else that seems appropriate or useful. The images that use plant specimens collaged into the drawing suggest the sculptural characteristics of each specimen. This method of building the image suggest the scientific tradition of botanical images -- drawn, painted, printed, or the specimen itself, as well as the tradition of pressed flowers, often used to preserve personal keepsakes. Both are a form of memory. What I am attempting to do is to come closer to understanding how meaning takes on physical form. Corinne Jones Nacogdoches, TX 2010
