I truly look forward to an exciting and challenging year of Spanish learning. In this class I will maintain high expectations for all students enrolled. I also expect all students to set high goals for themselves as well as to strive everyday to reach those goals. Every student has the ability to excel in this class if you follow the below recommendations: 1. Bring all supplies to class every day and arrive on time, prepared to work. 2. Follow all classroom rules and procedures everyday. 3. Take precise and neat notes while in class (even if you think you already know it). 4. Maintain an organized notebook (requirements listed below). 5. Complete all in-class and homework assignments on-time. Review vocabulary daily. 6. Study for tests/exams each night of the unit. Do not wait until the night before 7. Make up all missed assignments due to an excused absence in a timely manner (see below). Curriculum: The purpose of this course is to introduce students to basic vocabulary used in conversational Spanish, as well as to expose them to various cultural factors of the Spanish-speaking world. Grammatical concepts of both target and native language, as it applies, will be covered. Vocabulary will be presented in thematic units and grammar will relate to the themes whenever possible. Grading: 90-100 A 60-69 D 80-89 B 59 and below F 70-79 C 1

1. Grades are based on completed work and class participation. Points are accumulated for positive, active Participation, timely completion of classwork/homework, tests/quizzes and special projects. Participation Points may be lost for: tardiness, incomplete or no work, not participating fully when called on to respond, not bringing supplies to class, and negative behaviors in the classroom. 2. Extra credit, as a general rule, is not given in this class. When it is offered, it is initiated by me alone and should be taken advantage of at every chance. No extra credit opportunities will be offered if any required assignments are missing. No extra credit is offered after the 6 th week of any quarter. 3. Grades can be checked at any point using ProgressBook. I highly recommend that parents and guardians keep a close watch on Progress Book, to be aware of student progress or struggles. Grades are updated weekly, usually over the weekends, barring any unforeseen circumstances. Parents shouldn t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns about student progress or lack of progress in Spanish class. Supplies Required bring these to class EVERY day 1. Large binder (2 or larger is recommended) 2. Student workbook 3. Four Tabbed Dividers (labeled as described below in the notebook guidelines) 4. Loose leaf notebook paper (not torn out of spiral) 5. Pencils/pens 6. Textbook 7. Dry erase marker (1 per quarter, or as needed; any dark color) Notebook/Binder Guidelines: 1. Spanish Guidelines (this paper) 2. First: Divider labeled Notes which contains spiral notebook for ALL class notes and informational handouts 3. Second: Divider labeled Classwork/Homework which will contain all work done in class/for homework. Assignments kept in chronological order. 4. Third: Loose leaf paper for verb conjugation tables 5. Fourth: Divider labeled Tests/Quizzes which will contain all returned tests and quizzes Classroom Guidelines: Las Reglas de la Clase 1. Students will arrive on-time everyday and begin bellwork silently. For my class,on Time means students will be in their seats before the bell rings signaling the beginning of instruction time. 2. On entering the classroom, students will begin work on their bellringer/warm-up exercise. During this time, they are not to talk unless called upon by the teacher or an administrator who may be present. 3. Students will bring the required items to class every day-see Supplies listed above 4. Students will respect the teacher s right to teach and the students right to learn. 5. Students will follow all school rules and policies as outlined in their Student Agenda particularly in reference to the use of electronic devices. 6. Students will maintain and demonstrate respect to all persons and property in the classroom. 2

Classroom Procedures: Listed below are a few daily procedures that all students are expected to practice while in class. These procedures are non-negotiable, as they are in place only to allow all classes to run smoothly and according to school and district policy. 1. La Actividad de la Campana (Bell Work) Bell work is assigned at the beginning of each class period. You will complete all the Bell Work on one page for the week. This sheet is collected every Friday. After two weeks, if your Bell work is complete, you will receive credit for it. If it is not complete, you will not receive credit for it. Bell work not completed due to absence will be considered on a case-by-case basis. You should get the bellwork question from the QUE HICIMOS calendar of work that is posted at the back of the room and/or from a reliable classmate. If you are tardy, this may impact your completion of bell work. Incomplete bell work will also impact your participation grade as it is an expectation that it will be completed at the beginning of each class period. 2. Tardies: - if you are not in your seat and working when the bell rings you will be marked as tardy (see consequences below) - Do not ask to leave the room for any reason in the first 15 or the last 15 minutes of any class period. Do not ask to be excused before you have completed your bellwork, and the lesson for the day has been explained to you. The consequences of above mentioned actions will effect your participation grade. - 3.Absent/Makeup work: - If you know of an upcoming absence, notify me and I will try to get you make-up work in advance - Tests/Quizzes: i. All tests taken in this course are given a curve based on the class performance, if you do not take the test on the assigned day you will not receive the curve ii. If a test or quiz was given on the day of your absence, you will make up the test/quiz the day your return to class or during Bonus/Advisory. It is your responsibility to come to Bonus to make up missed tests/quizzes. I will NOT send for you. As with any work, you have 2 weeks to complete any missed test or quiz. No makeups will be allowed after this 2 week time period without advanced approval. Exceptions will be made on a case by case basis for extenuating circumstances (medical/administrative) only. iii.quiz values will range from 10 to 50 points. Tests may range from 100 to 200 points. - Make-up Work: 1. Turn in any homework that was due the day of your absence immediately when you return. Place it in the LATE/MISSING work tray, not in the regular turn-in tray. 2. Copy all information down from the homework/absent work calendar (this will tell you what we did, what I collected, and what the homework was) 3. Get any handouts from the bin for the work you missed. 4. Copy notes from a responsible classmate 5. All make-up work must be turned in within 2 days of your return for each day of your absence. If work is not turned it, it will remain a 0. 3

1. Late/Missing Work: - work is considered late/missing if not turned in when requested (the beginning of class only, no exceptions) due to any reason other than absence of the student *********late work will be accepted for twos week from original due date only. After two weeks from the date of assignment, missing work will not be accepted and the missing work will be recorded as a 0 and it may NOT be made up. This applies to all assignments: Tests, Quizzes, Homework, Classwork, and Projects. Projects that are late lose 10 points for each day they are late up to the value of the assignment. Exceptions made on a case by case basis in the case of an extended excused absence from school. - As a rule, all late work should be turned in within 2 days of your return from any excused absence. Assignments missed due to unexcused absence may not be made up. If you are absent due to suspension or APP assignment, you must hand in your completed work done while in APP the day of your return. The failure to turn in APP work will be loss of participation points for the day. 2. Cell Phones/Electronics: - Always adhere to the GHS policy on electronics and cell phone usage (all must be turned off and not visible during the hours of 7:30-2:30) There MAY be times students are permitted to use their device in conjunction with an assignment, but this will be set by the teacher only. Only in these circumstances should ANY electronic device, including headphones,earbuds or any other listening device, be visible or in use during class time. CONSEQUENCES: 1st offense-phone taken until end of class period, 2nd Offense-Phone taken to main office. - Parents should not expect students to respond to any messages, texts, or phone calls during the time they are in my class, as the expectation is that their devices will be turned off unless they are working on a classroom assignment and have express permission to be using their device for said purpose. - Students, please keep your phones in your own control inside a bag, purse,pocket or backpack out of sight and out of the reach of others to make sure you keep possession of your devices. 3. Dress Code: - always adhere to the GHS policy on appropriate dress while in attendance at school and at school functions - dress code policies will always be followed and enforced in this classroom with an office referral given by this teacher, and a parent contact being made for any who repeatedly violate the guidelines 4. Cheating/ La Trampa: - according to the district policies, cheating is defined as a. copying from another student on tests/assignments b. writing information on desks, in books, or having out notes or devices during testing c. texting/any form of cell phone use during testing/class work d. allowing someone to copy or giving them your work/test answers-this applies even in group work assignments e. plagiarism f. Using translation software service or software. I will know right away if you use one. Doing so will result in your receiving a 0 on your assignment You may use www.wordreference.com and www.rae.es to help you with a composition or paper 4

- consequences: a. first offense 0 on assignment/test, parents contacted, office notified by informal written notice b. second offense 0 on assignment, referral and office assigned consequence 10. Classroom atmosphere and respect: This classroom will always be an environment of positive learning and respect. As a class we will not allow disrespect, disparaging or insulting remarks or comments, negative confrontations, swearing, rudeness, or bullying. Each person is responsible for behaving appropriately and for pointing out infractions in a respectful, constructive way. Your classroom should be a place of positive learning. You may ask permission to leave the room for other purposes after I have completed any lesson/instruction. Please do not interrupt teaching, but wait until a convenient time to ask privately. Sometime during class a time may arise when you disagree with something I have said or done. I will at no time argue with any student in the classroom and if you insist on attempting to argue, you can expect to receive an immediate consequence of being asked to leave the room and receiving an office referral as well as loss of participation points for the day. I have no problem discussing any issues after class or in private outside of class time. Consequences: 1. Stage 1: Personal Warning (this can be verbal or non-verbal such as a look or tap on your desk) 2. Stage 2: Discussion with student regarding appropriate behaviors and and informal Written Warning to student, Copy to Office documenting a pattern of inappropriate ongoing behavior and Phone call to parents/possible detention assigned and Loss of participation points for the day, 3. Stage 3: Office Referral written, student removed from class, and parents contacted **Any major infraction will result in an immediate office referral and removal from the classroom ***If an office referral is written, the student will automatically lose his/her participation points for that week. Tardies: 1. 1 st and 2 nd tardy = warning/office visit. Loss of participation point for the day. Students will not be admitted to class late without a legible signed note from the office. 2. 3 rd tardy and beyond = call to parent/detention assigned SPECIAL NOTE: I am very proud of all my students and expect them to represent the class well at all times. I anticipate positive reports from any visitors, observers, teachers and staff regarding my students and their behavior. However, if, at any time, there is a substitute teacher and the substitute leaves a note stating a student/students misbehaved and should be disciplined, or if another teacher has to intervene due to a student s behavior, a referral to the office will be written. The student/students will have the opportunity to explain the situation to the office; however, I will not be able to make a judgment due to my absence. 5
