INTEGRATED ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT EEAcademy Winter School Programme 28 January 01 February 2019 Copenhagen, Denmark

THE EEACADEMY WINTER SCHOOL The European Environment Agency (EEA) is an agency of the European Union. Our aim is to support sustainable development and to help achieve significant and measurable improvement in Europe's environment through the provision of timely, targeted, relevant and reliable information to policymaking agents and the public. To achieve these goals, the EEA undertakes, in close cooperation with the European Environment Information and Observation Network (Eionet), a comprehensive range of Integrated Environmental Assessments (IEA) to support environmental policy and decision-making in Europe. These include five-yearly reports on the state and outlook of the environment, thematic and sectoral assessments, analyses of the effectiveness of policy measures, forward-looking studies, and studies on the impacts of change on Europe's environment and resources. Our improved understanding of the systemic nature of environmental challenges creates a need for new ways of working, and further development of integrated assessment methods to support not only environmental but also economic and social policy and decision-making. The EEA established the EEAcademy to build capacity and undertake learning activities in areas where policy needs are evolving and the EEA-Eionet experience and competences need further development. The EEAcademy Winter School on Integrated Environmental Assessment is part of this effort to strengthen the current knowledge base on integrated assessment, improving coherence across assessments through establishing a common, foundational understanding of key theories, concepts and approaches. It builds on the EEA and Eionet expertise and scientific advances in this field and is designed to enhance critical reflection and develop key competences within a vibrant and collaborative community of practitioners. Building competences together

WHO IS THE WINTER SCHOOL FOR? This EEAcademy Winter School is designed to support experts with a direct involvement in Integrated Environmental Assessment, seeking to gain a broader understanding of its role, challenges and methodological advances. In 2019, the Winter School will be primarily targeted at those for whom strengthening their competencies in integrated assessment would be beneficial for their current role such as contributors to state of the environment reports, EEA staff and people that use information from Integrated Environmental Assessments in their daily work. The Winter School aims to achieve a good mixture of participants with different views, backgrounds and approaches to IEA from within the EEA, the Eionet network and EU institutions in order to allow knowledge co-creation and sharing. KEY CONTENTS The programme is designed to address the following key questions: What are the fundamentals of Integrated Environmental Assessment? What body of knowledge and practice has informed the leading work of the EEA in this field over the past decades? What is changing in integrated assessment? What new challenges in the sustainability arena call for a new type of knowledge? How can integrated assessment approaches respond to such knowledge requirements? How can we effectively combine and apply different methodologies and tools in specific working contexts? Sharing knowledge and know-how

THE 5-DAY PROGRAMME The overall programme covers the why, what and how of Integrated Environmental Assessment and addresses the broader scope of Integrated Sustainability Assessment. The Winter School presentations and hands-on exercises draw on EEA and Eionet practices as well as scientific experience. The faculty consists of experts in the field of Integrated Environmental Assessment complemented by the EEA Winter School team who will guide the hands-on training sessions and support the development of competencies and transferability of knowledge. Overall, the 5-day programme will cover: The role of Integrated Environmental Assessment in the science-policy interface, methodological advancements and the challenges ahead. Integrated Environmental Assessment: the principles, key features, conceptual frameworks, and assessment approaches (tools and methodologies). Complementing a 'problems' focus with a 'responses' approach transforming the way we produce knowledge. Going from Integrated Environmental Assessment to the broader scope of Integrated Sustainability Assessment linked to the Sustainable Development Goals. Group exercises and hands-on training on how to carry out an IEA with a focus on: o designing and framing an assessment; o assessing state of, trends in and prospects for the environment; o participatory stakeholder engagement; o presenting and communicating assessments. Group and individual exercises supporting transfer of knowledge to participants' working contexts. Mutual learning

PROGRAMME AND LEARNING APPROACH The EEAcademy Winter School comprises a 5-day programme in Copenhagen. Core-content sessions are articulated with networking opportunities to get to know other participants for mutual learning. The programme has been developed as an exercise of mutual learning, where participants can experience and compare different approaches to Integrated Environmental Assessment. A combination of learning methods is used from lectures to case-study analyses and practical exercises. Participants are called upon to make use of their creative potential, in a critical and reflexive attitude towards their own personal and organisational experience. A diverse group of participants is expected. The learning path approach enables the course to link to participants' specific contexts and background. Particular attention is devoted to knowledge transferability into working realities. Enhancing expertise

VENUE AND PRACTICAL INFORMATION The 2019 EEAcademy Winter School on Integrated Environmental Assessment will be held from 28 January to 1 February 2019 (5 days) at the EEA premises in Denmark: Kongens Nytorv 6, 1050 Copenhagen K. Attendance at the 2019 Winter School is free of charge, although participants will need to cover their own travel and subsistence costs and make their own travel arrangements. The Winter School requires a good understanding of both spoken and written English. The active engagement of participants during the full 5-day programme is essential. The programme starts at lunchtime on the first day and ends at lunchtime on the fifth day, to accommodate travel. In order to ensure a broad geographical distribution and mixture of different backgrounds, potential participants are asked to provide information on their experience and personal learning goals in their application. If you want to attend the 2019 Winter School on Integrated Environmental Assessment, please fill in the Winter School application form. The deadline for applications is Monday 10 December 2018. You will be contacted after the deadline if your application is successful. If you have any questions regarding the 2019 Winter School, please feel free to contact the Winter School team at EEAcademy@eea.europa.eu.
