August, 2011 Dear Sixth Grade Parents, The sixth grade class trip to the Mohican School in the Out-of-Doors, will take place in mid-september, and a truly exciting environmental sojourn has been planned for our students. Every year, the members of the faculty look for special and stimulating experiences to enhance our curriculum and to offer students additional avenues to see the world around them. This venture into Ohio provides a retreat from the crowds and an opportunity to be immersed in experiential learning with the help of talented naturalists. Students spend the majority of their days exploring the aquatic and wooded life that exists on the Mohican campus and examining the nature of human interaction with these environs. In addition, they have time for recreational activities such as fishing and crafts. The center itself is located at the historic Hemlock Falls site near Butler, Ohio. The Mohican School in the Out-of- Doors facilities and amenities include pine and beech-maple forests, streams, a pond, and wetlands. The facility has served young people for 50 years with the goal of increasing campers awareness of the special relationship between man and nature. If you would like to learn more about the Mohican School in the Out-of-Doors, please visit their website at www.mohicanoutdoorschool.org. Attached to this email is information pertinent to our upcoming trip to the Mohican School in the Out-of- Doors, a Sayre permission form, and a Sayre expectations agreement. Each student and a parent are asked to sign and return an expectation agreement, and parents are asked to sign and return the permission form. Since the costs associated with the Mohican School in the Out-of-Doors are paid in advance, a parent s signature on the forms represents not only a student s commitment to participate but also a family s financial commitment. All materials relating to the Mohican School in the Out-of-Doors trip (permission slip and expectations agreement) are due in the Middle School Office no later than Friday, August 26 th. The cost of the sixth grade trip to the Mohican School in the Out-of-Doors ($260.00) will be reflected in both your September ($220) as well as your October ($40) student billing statements which are mailed by the Business Office. We are anxiously awaiting this sixth grade trip to the Mohican School in the Out-of-Doors; we believe it will be a truly enriching opportunity and will provide a host of cherished memories for our sixth graders. If the cost of the trip presents a problem for anyone, please do not hesitate to call so that we may work something out. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Tim Corkran, 6th grade Environmental Science teacher and trip coordinator, at 254-1361, extension 416, or Heidi Newman, Sayre's Middle School Director, at 254-1361, extension 440.
