It came into existence at Aligarh in 1920 during the Khilafat and Non-cooperation movement in response to Gandhiji s call to boycott government supported educational institutions. JMI derives its name from Urdu language in which Jamia means University and Millia means National. Department of Social Work, JMI is one of the pioneering and top five professional training institutions in India. The department which was established in 1967 has continuously responded to the societal and corporate needs of developing trained human resources. The department offers two years full time Post Graduate professional 1
programmes in Social Work with specializations in Social Development and Social Welfare and Human Resource Management. Besides this the department provides Doctoral programme in Social Work and Human Resource Management and UG programme in Social Work and PGD in Management of NGOs. The department has been associated with several National and International organisation including corporate houses, NGOs, Public sector and autonomous organizations, various ministries of the government, different consultancy organizations and reputed academic institutions. In recognition of the services rendered by the department, University Grants Commission (UGC) has elevated the department to the status of Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) w. e. f. April 2010. THE PROGRAMME The training programme is designed to impart the participants with knowledge of research methods, research process, use of research tools and techniques, writing and presentation skills to the young researchers. This programme is intended to provide the participants with a broad overview of methods and concepts (both quantitative and qualitative research) as well as the software tools used in the social sciences research. By the end of the programme, the participants should be confident in using the right methods and tools to analyze data. They will also be able to better design their primary research studies as well as to quickly enter and analyze this information. The specific objectives of the programme are: To familiarize participants with basic research methods (both qualitative and quantitative) To enhance the capability of the participants in performing statistical analysis through selected packages such as SPSS To enhance the capability of the participants in performing qualitative data analysis Enhancing knowledge base and develop skills for selecting appropriate analyses and performing the analyses Augmenting knowledge and skills for interpretation of analyses and presentation in user friendly formats 2
AREAS/ TOPICS OF BE COVERED IN THE PROGRAMME Introduction to social science research, selection and defining of research problem, approaches in quantitative and qualitative research, methods of data collection, development of tools, quantitative data analysis by using SPSS, qualitative data analysis, writing research proposal and presentation. NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND TARGET GROUP The programme is open to Ph. D scholars (only). The training programme will be open to 30 (only) participants. The criteria for selection of participants will be based on the current status of their research work. The selected participants will be informed through e-mail. Those who are not selected for the programme will be refunded their registration fee. PROGRAMME DURATION From 1 st to 10 th December, 2012 PEDAGOGY Skill oriented, lecture method, case study method, group presentation, and field visit will be used to support learning.
