GENERAL INFORMATION CONSTITUTION / DOCTRINAL POSITION Dumisani Theological Institute and Bible School operates under the direction of a Board of Governors, representing the following churches: The Free Church in Southern Africa, The Free Church of Scotland, The Gereformeerde Kerk East London, and The Gereformeerde Kerk imonti. The doctrinal position of Dumisani Theological Institute and Bible School is that reflected in The Belgic Confession, The Canons of Dort and The Heidelberg Catechism; and The Westminster Confession of Faith and its Catechisms. In accordance with government legislation, Dumisani is an Association Incorporated under Section 21 of the Companies Act (Registration Number 2002 / 025719 /08), the Board of Governors serving as Directors. AIM / MISSION STATEMENT / ETHOS Dumisani Theological Institute and Bible School aims to: (1) provide high quality theological education and training, based on the Bible and the historical Reformed Confessions, for those who feel called to ministry in the Church of Jesus Christ; (2) provide Christian education and leadership training for elders, lay preachers and other Christian workers; (3) aid the growth of the South African Church through the provision of suitable Christian literature, Sunday School syllabi, and Bible Study by Correspondence. Information Booklet 2016 PERSONNEL Full-time Academic Staff (Rev Dr) Jack Whytock, BA, DipCS, MTS, MTh, PhD (Acting Principal) Dr Whytock is a Canadian and minister of the Free Church of Scotland in Prince Edward Island. He is married to Nancy and they have four children. (Rev Dr) Greg Phillips, LTh, BAHons, MA, PhD (Acting Academic Dean) Dr Phillips is a Zimbabwean Baptist minister, married to Carol, with two daughters. He specialises in Old and New Testament studies. (Mrs) Nancy Whytock, BA, CBS, MA (Librarian) Mrs Whytock is a Canadian. She is the Dumisani Librarian and also teaches skills courses in the areas of College-level English, Computer Skills and College-level Learning Skills. She is married to Jack and they have four children. Part-time Academic Staff (Rev) Wayne Grätz, BTh, BAHons, MA Rev Gratz is an Elder at a South African Baptist Church. He is also a qualified teacher employed at a school in King William s Town. Having been employed full-time at Dumisani for four years, he now continues to serve as a part-time lecturer and is the Communications Officer. (Rev Dr) Paul de Bruyn, BTh, BThHons, MDiv, MTh, PhD Dr de Bruyn is the pastor of the East London Reformed Church and has served for 14 years in pastoral ministry in Namibia and South Africa. His PhD is in church leadership. (Rev) John Koning, LTh, BThHons, MA Rev John Koning is the pastor of Grace Bible Church, East London. He is a former lecturer of the Bible Institute of South Africa at Kalk Bay and was also involved in campus ministry at UCT. Currently he is doing a PhD in church planting in South Africa. Full-time Administrative Staff (Mrs) Hlalanathi Mathiso (Receptionist and Assistant Administrator) Mrs Mathiso has particular responsibility as receptionist for administrative assistance for student records and finances, and oversees the Correspondence programme and printing of Christian literature. Hlalanathi is a member of the Clubview Free Church. Part-time Administrative Staff (Mrs) Shelley Lombard Mrs Lombard is Registrar of the Institute, with particular responsibility for finance and academic administration. She is married to Deon and they have three married daughters and two granddaughters. 3

LIBRARY All students are encouraged to make use of our library facility and can receive help from the librarian with locating materials, whether books or online resources. Information Booklet 2016 WHAT WE OFFER Dumisani offers: Individual Short Courses The Certificate of Christian Foundations (CCF) The Advanced Ministry Studies (AMS) Dumisani facilitates: The North-West University Bachelor of Theology degree (BTh) The Certificate of Christian Foundations (CCF) is a non-accredited programme designed to equip students for service in the church and community. It requires one year full-time, or two years part-time study. The CCF consists of completing twelve courses, some as mandatory, and some as electives. These are the same courses available as Short Courses. (A separate one-page leaflet is available giving full details on the CCF.) The Advanced Ministry Studies (AMS) is a non-accredited programme designed to equip students for ordination to pastoral ministry. It requires two years full-time, or four years part-time study. It consists of completing the equivalent of a minimum of 200 credits of the BTh programme, and has its own assessment and evaluation. The Bachelor of Theology (BTh) is a North-West University degree accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training. Dumisani will function as an Open Learning Centre for the Faculty of Theology of the Potchefstroom Campus of North-West University and facilitates the learning of students on their behalf. The BTh is designed to equip students for a wide range of Church Ministry opportunities. It is a three-year full-time programme which part-time students may complete in five years, or in six years upon application for an extension. It consists of completing a total of 32 modules and includes instruction in the biblical languages and other non-theological subjects such as philosophy and academic literacy. (The full curriculum is tabled on page 8). Please note: (a) The Basic Ministry Studies (BMS) programme will be phased out at the end of 2016. (b) All CCF courses may also be taken as individual Short Courses. (c) All classes and seminars held on campus are conducted in English and all written assignments, tests and examinations must be written in English. METHODS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING: The lecturer/facilitator s aim is not merely to transfer knowledge, but to guide and assist the process of learning by the students. The lecturers/facilitators may use a variety of methods of presentation and assessment appropriate to the subject. Students are required to prepare themselves for each class. This includes prior study of the indicated 5

reading materials and completion of required tasks. Formal written assignments also form part of the learning process, as do class tests and final examinations. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Application The appropriate Application Form must be completed by all candidates for each of the programmes. This applies to students taking up Dumisani programmes or the NWU BTh programme for the first time. Application Forms may be obtained from the Offices of Dumisani Theological Institute and Bible School. Applications for the Certificate of Christian Foundations will normally only be considered from holders of a Senior Leaving Certificate (Grade 12) but exemptions may be made on the grounds of recognition of prior (experiential) learning. Applications for Advanced Ministry Studies will normally only be considered from those who are able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the whole field of Christian studies and the ability to study on their own. Typically, a pass in our Certificate of Christian Foundations or similar basic studies at another Institution qualifies a person for entering this programme. Applicants for the Bachelor of Theology must: Possess the required qualifications for university entrance (Matric exemption or conditional exemption on the basis of qualifications or age). Successfully complete the North-West University application process. Successfully complete the interview process at Dumisani. Supporting documents No application will be considered without submission of the following: ID document / Passport, School Leaving Certificate, Other higher education certificates, Passport photos four for BTh applicants; three for other applicants. Original documents must be submitted for scrutiny. Interview: Consideration of applications will normally include an interview. This interview will deal with practical matters, the applicant s academic standing, English proficiency and spiritual experience. All applicants must be able to demonstrate reasonable competence in written and spoken English. The right of admission to study at Dumisani Theological Institute is finally reserved by the Principal and the teaching staff, under the supervision of the Governing Board. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that their church or denomination agrees to their studying at Dumisani and that the courses which are offered by Dumisani are acceptable to their church.

Information Booklet 2016 Registration All new and continuing students MUST register for the specific Courses or Modules they are committing to take during the academic year / semester / term in question (see closing dates on the following page). Students may choose to drop one or more courses/modules following registration, but full fees will only be reimbursed if a formal written request to drop given courses/modules is received by the Registrar by the end of Week 2 of the classes in question. Closing dates must be carefully noted and adhered to, and the appropriate fees must be submitted with application and registration (see details below). In any case, no student will be permitted to begin a course or module later than the second week of classes running. N.B. Students with outstanding fees will not normally be permitted to register. Notes: Application Fees are non-refundable and must accompany the student s application form and supporting documentation. Registration Fees are paid annually and must be paid in full before a student may begin classes. BTh/AMS: Late Applications/Registrations are charged an additional Fee of R200 according to the closing dates given above. Matriculation Exemption fees of R500 must be paid by BTh candidates who need to apply for this Exemption. Responsibility for gaining matriculation exemption lies entirely with the applicant. Method of Payment: Signed payment arrangements must be made with the Registrar by the registration date. CCF and Short Course students: Normally tuition fees will be paid in monthly instalments at the beginning of each month for all CCF students. BTh and AMS students: One third of tuition fees must be paid by 31 st March. Two thirds of tuition fees must be paid by 31 st May. Full tuition fees must be paid by 17 th October 2016. Please Note: AMS and BTh students are strongly advised to adopt a monthly payment schedule. See Mrs. Mathiso in the office to discuss a monthly payment plan. Non-payment of fees will be treated very seriously. The Registrar is authorised to impose a variety of penalties. Students who have not paid the required fees by the required date may not be permitted to sit examinations, and may not be permitted to progress to the next semester. Results will not be released to any student (or any other body) if the required fees have not been paid by the required date. Timetables will be distributed to all students at the orientation event. All students must familiarise themselves with the Semester Dates and the Class Schedule and ensure that they attend all classes of the courses for which they are registered. Classes will begin from Monday, 1 st February 2016. This includes contact sessions and personal study.

Information Booklet 2016 Certificate of Christian Foundations (CCF) This programme provides foundational teaching in key areas of Christian life, Skills, Bible, Ministry, and Christian Belief. It also provides a foundation for further theological studies. Students are required to complete eight core courses and four electives.
