Student Expectatins: Accept respnsibility fr yur wn learning Cmplete every assignment befre it is due Give cnsistent time fr the curse. It is expected that student will spend 12-16 hurs each week General Curse Objectives: On successful cmpletin f this curse, the student will be able t: Use prerequisite cncepts and skills f the arithmetic f real numbers. Manipulate and evaluate algebraic expressins. Slve linear equatins. Apply linear equatins t prblems. Write and graph linear equatins n a rectangular crdinate system. Slve a linear system f equatins by substitutin r eliminatin. Graph the slutin t a linear inequality. Use functin ntatin, and distinguish between input and utput. Graph the slutin t a system f linear inequalities. Perfrm peratins invlving plynmials. Factr plynmials.
Slve plynmial and quadratic equatins by factring. Apply rules f expnents, and use scientific ntatin. Simplify and perfrm peratins invlving ratinal expressins. Slve equatins cntaining ratinal expressins. Simplify and perfrm peratins invlving radicals and ratinal expnents. Slve equatins invlving radical expressins. Slve quadratic equatins by taking square rts, by cmpleting the square, and by the quadratic frmula. Given a quadratic functin find its vertex and intercepts, and graph the parabla. Mdel and slve applicatin prblems. Apply study skills fr learning mathematics and fr cping with math anxiety. Use the symbls and vcabulary f basic mathematics crrectly. Grading: Grading in the class will be based n three categries: hmewrk, quizzes, and exams. Hmewrk: Hmewrk is critical t yur understanding f the curse. Mathematics is nt a spectatr sprt. Yu need t practice math, and practice it ften. The assignments are designed t help yu learn the material, as well as prepare fr the midterms and the final exam. Hmewrk will be assigned fr each sectin and cllected regularly. N late hmewrk will be accepted. Yur lwest hmewrk scre will be drpped at the end f the semester. This is t accunt fr illness, lack f fcus, etc. Discussins: Yu will be assigned a grup fr the semester. As a grup, yu will be assigned a set f prblems each week, with each grup member being assigned a specific prblem r tw. Yu will need t cmplete tw assignments fr that set f prblems each week. By Wednesday at 11:59pm each week, yu need t pst yur prblem and hw yu slved it. Yur pst culd be a vide walking thrugh the steps f the prblem r a picture f yur wrk including written cmments abut each step. By Sunday at 11:59pm fr each week, yu will need t respnd t at least 2 ther prblems psted by yur grup members. These respnses shuld be mre than Gd jb. Yu shuld ask questins abut strategies if smething is unclear, suggest a crrectin (in a kind plite manner), r suggest an alternative strategy fr understanding the prblem. Late psts will nt receive any credit. Exams: There will be three midterm exams and ne final exam fr the curse. Prctred Exams: All exams must be prctred. Tw ptins are available fr each exam.
1. USM Campus: Yur instructr will pst a specific time r tw fr each week when an exam is scheduled. If yu will use this ptin, ntify yur instructr f yur plan at least ne week befre the exam. 2. Alternate Lcatins: If yu cannt attend the times given by yur instructr, yu will need t schedule yur prctring thrugh University Cllege at http://www.learn2.maine.edu/exam. Thse in the state f Maine will need t g t a University Cllege Center. Thse ut f state can find a lcatin in their state (see the link at the bttm f the webpage). The midterm exams will cver Chapters 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. The final exam will be cumulative, as well as cver Chapter 9. Missed exams may nt be made up unless I am cntacted prir t the exam. Only dcumented medical emergencies, University excused absences, and military duty qualify fr missing an exam. Final Exam: If a student receives a higher scre n the final exam than the lwest midterm scre, then the midterm scre will be replaced with average f that midterm scre and the final exam. A grade f C- r better is necessary t fulfill the Cllege Mathematics Readiness Requirement. The breakdwn f the grading is as fllws: Hmewrk 15% Discussins 5% Exam 1 20% Exam 2 20% Exam 3 20% Final Exam 20% Ttal 100% Final Grades will be n stricter than: A 93% r greater A- 90-92.9% B+ 87-89.9% B 83-86.9% B- 80-82.9% C+ 77-79.9%
C 73-76.9% C- 70-72.9% D 60-69% F Less than 60% Resurces and Help: There are multiple resurces available t help yu succeed in this class. The fllwing are sme: 1. Classmates. Classmates are excellent surces fr help and supprt. Sme students frm study grups and wrk tgether daily. Others met nce r twice a week, r meet befre a test. By the way, educatinal research has shwn that, fr many students, thse wh study and actively interact with each ther n curse material understand better, retain mre, and have a better utlk abut themselves and abut schl than thse wh study alne. 2. Yur Instructr. Yur instructr can give yu assistance during ffice hurs r by appintment. In additin t questins n a class lessn r hmewrk prblem, yur instructr is usually the best persn t apprach if yu have a questin regarding cncepts, justificatin fr certain steps, and the "Why...?" type f questins. Be aware that instructrs usually lve t talk abut these kinds f things and yu may hear mre than yu want! 3. Tutring. USM students receive free tutring services in Math, Writing, English as a Secnd r Other Language (ESOL), and Technlgy Supprt. Our tutrs are trained t assist students with imprving their cmprehensin and skills in these subject areas, and have scheduled hurs thrughut the week and at multiple lcatins. Whether n the Prtland, Grham, r Lewistn-Auburn campus, students can schedule a face-t-face r nline tutring appintment by visiting https://maine.mywcnline.net/. (PLEASE NOTE: students visiting this site fr the first time will need t activate their accunt, which will nly take a few mments.) In additin t self-scheduling thrugh the website, appintments fr Prtland and Grham can als be scheduled by calling 780-4228, r by visiting The Learning Cmmns at University Libraries (http://www.usm.maine.edu/learningcmmns ). Additinal math supprt is ffered n a walk-in basis thrugh the Mathematics and Statistics Department, lcated in C576 Science Building n the Prtland campus. Tips t be successful in an nline math curse: 1. Lg in Blackbard and MyMathLab regularly. 2. Make a study schedule and adhere t it. 3. Ask questins at every turn. 4. Practice, practice. practice,
