Serving with Faith and Love 2 nd November 2017 Kia Ora, Kia Orana, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Namaste, Bula, Malo ni, Makadini, Annyoung, Witamy, Welcome, OUR FOUR SCHOOL VALUES RELIGIOUS EDUCATION We have started the term well with focusing on the Communion of Saints. At All Saints Day Mass on Wednesday 1 st November we celebrate our 4 favourite Saints, Mother Mary, St Mary MacKillop, St Joseph and St Francis of Assisi. Each Saint has their own message for our students. Mother Mary is: Helping students believe, achieve and succeed. St Joseph s is: we all strive to do our best as we live, love and learn together. St Mary MacKillop s motto is: In our school every day we learn, love and pray following in the footsteps of Jesus. And, St Francis s motto: For it is giving that we receive. ALL SAINTS DAY MASS Wednesday morning at 9.00am Room 5 walked down the aisle of the church displaying the four different colours of our special school Saints. They decorated the altar with the colours, candles and pictures of our saints. All classes took a part in the special mass. Room 5 with the dressing of the altar, readings, music and PowerPoint. Room 4 led the congregation in the prayers of the faithful and Room 1 placed the pictures of our Saints at the altar. A special thank you to all the people who helped. To Father s Iosefo, Filipo and Joseph, who supported the children in their preparation. To Lisa, who donated the colours, to Maryanne for the lovely lei for the bible, to Val for the leis for our celebrants, to the children who were so respectful and for their enthusiasm and participation, and to the Parish and parents who joined us.
As I walked down the middle path way of the church to dress the altar I was so excited to do something at Mass. When I was dressing the altar I felt worried too, just in case I did a mistake on my first time doing a job for Mass. As we were all singing it felt joyful. Jaishiri. Room 5 We all gathered together to celebrate all Saints Day with a School and Parish Mass. The altar was decorated with house colours: red, blue green and yellow representing the House Group Saints: Red- St Mary Mackillop, Blue -Mother Mary, Green -St Francis of Assisi and Yellow- St Joseph. Hymns were sung dedicated to the Saints. This was a day to remember the importance of Saints in our lives. Brianna Yr.7 UNIFORMS Thank you to all parents and caregivers who are helping their children wear the correct uniforms to school. The children should all be in summer uniform now as the weather is getting a lot warmer every day. This means that all children should be wearing short sleeve shirts or blouses and black sandals. All St Joseph s School uniforms can now be bought at the office as they will no longer be sold at the Warehouse in New Lynn. We also have a variety of second hand uniforms as well as new uniforms, all at a reduced cost. If there is a problem with uniforms, please insure that your child comes to school with a note explaining the reason for the discrepancy.
PO SIVA Saturday 28 th October saw us celebrating with dance in our Po Siva. Even though there was a very important sporting game on we had a strong crowd, fabulous dancing and lots of support from the audience. I d like to thank the students, parents, families and the Parish for supporting the school in such a lovely and colourful way. Total to date is $2766.00. It is still not too late to send in your donations to the school. All money raised through our school s fundraising goes back to benefit your children and school community through the much-needed improvement of general operations and resources at the school. All donations received will be issued with GST receipts for tax claim purposes if required. A transparent list of all the donations is available at the office. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR A FABULOUS EVENING AND GREAT ENTERTAINMENT.
HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD? The teachers at the school are not the only people who help your children learn. The first part of their education begins at home. We are here to help the process along with curriculum knowledge. What you can do is to support the teachers by helping the children in many ways: after school, in the park, in the car, at the supermarket and at home. Some helpful hints for their English knowledge are: When you get home, ask them to write you a story about what happened today, or what they saw, or an imaginative story. Ask the children to sit quietly and read to themselves. For the little ones 10-15mins for the older ones 30 minutes should be easy to do. Spend some time with your children with them either reading to you or they can read to each other. Reading aloud is very important as they need to hear themselves. Talk to the children about different words, different meanings, different sounds, different spellings, different languages. Read to your children. Every night before they go to bed, sit with them and read them a story. No matter what their age children love to sit and listen to stories. ROOM 1 CHICKS! Room 1 has their first egg hatched. In the classroom, there is a chick. It came out of the egg. The eggs came from the lady. By Carter, Room 1
BASKETBALL We are the Champions! Our year 5 & 6 students are in an inner city competition with 8 other schools and play every Friday evening at St Paul s college. They have, to date, won their games and are on the way to becoming another Steven Adams. THE GREAT KIWI MORNING TEA Room 4 would like to thank all the students and staff who supported our morning tea to raise money for kiwi conservation. Thank you also to the parents who sent along yummy things to sell. We raised $79.00 which will go to Kiwis for Kiwi. ROOM 5 RETREAT Room 5 spent Monday out at the Hillsborough Friary with Brother Phillip at their annual retreat. The sun shone brightly as the Holy Spirit welcomed us to St Francis Retreat Centre. It was a day to reflect and pray. The day s activities were to understand how important Saints are in our life. The treasure hunt activity helped me to work together as a team. Praying in front of the statue of Mother Mary and singing made me feel like I was truly one of God s children. Justenna Yr 7 As I entered St Francis Retreat Centre, I felt amazed by the sight of plants and trees surrounding the building. Walking through the grounds was like entering heaven. This experience taught me to reflect on my faith and to know more about Saints and their values. Brianna Yr.7
