Board of Education Yadkin County Schools Yadkinville, NC A regular meeting of the Yadkin County Board of Education was held on Monday, May 6, 2013 at 8:30a.m. at Yadkinville Elementary School. Present: Student Representatives: Administrative: Staff Members: Visitors: Frank Brown, Howard McKnight, Jennifer Hemric, Rex Baity, Joe Dezern, Diane Hampton, Lynn Allred Kayla Smith, Milca Jarquin, Samuel Stone Stewart Hobbs, Donna Boyles, Karen Matthews, Celia Perry, Denise Bullin, Rickey Oakes, Donald Hawks, Alice Connolly, Myra Cox, Kathy Hughes, Teresa Logan, Charles Garrett, Ida Weisner, Chris Lyon, James Sheek, Lavonne Fortner Tammy Miller, Melissa Moxley, Ann Eddens, Tammy Poindexter, Elizabeth Hefner Fall Creek Battle of the Books, Forbush Middle Battle of the Books, Joshua Barnes & parents, Rachel Casstevens & parents, Mr. & Mrs. Stone, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Ms. Jarquin The Board of Education the student representatives with a plaque thanking them for serving on the Board of Education. Milca Jarquin stated it had been a pleasure to represent the Yadkin Early College and it was a great experience that she will take with her forever. She also stated that they are having finals this week for college classes and that students were also preparing for finals in high school classes. In addition, she stated they were preparing for their spring festival this week for incoming freshman. Samuel Stone thanked the Board for the opportunity to represent Starmount High School and that it had been a wonderful experience. He also stated that AP exams were coming up this week and final exams were coming up soon. He stated it was a busy time at Starmount High School and that everyone was excited about graduation. Kayla Smith stated it had been a pleasure to serve as Forbush High School s student representative and that she had greatly enjoyed it. She also thanked the Board for letting her be the representative. In addition, she stated the baseball team was scheduled to play in the conference tournament tonight and the track team would be heading to regionals on Saturday. She stated that everyone was getting ready for exams and for the summer.

Howard McKnight wished the student representatives well in their college careers and stated he enjoyed having them serve on the Board of Education. He also stated he hoped they would come back and visit. #13-032 On motion by Dezern, seconded by Hampton, the Board entered closed Closed Session: session at 8:30a.m. for reasons 1-9. #13-033 On motion by Hampton, seconded by Baity, the Board recessed Recess Closed closed session to return to open session. Session: #13-034 On motion by Hampton, seconded by Hemric, the Board approved the Approval of May 6, 2013 Board of Education meeting agenda. Agenda: Pledge of Allegiance: Invocation: The Yadkinville Elementary School Choir led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Lynn Allred gave the invocation. Presentations: Melissa Moxley was recognized for winning the Elkin Tribune s Reader s Choice Award for being the best teacher. Sara McCall was recognized for her volunteer work for Yadkin County Schools. The Fall Creek Elementary School Battle of the Books team was recognized for being the district champion. The Forbush Middle School Battle of the Books team was recognized for being the district champion. Rachel Casstevens was recognized for being the State Champion in the High School Business Plan Competition for her Hop on the Bus video. Joshua Barnes was recognized for being the State Champion in the SkillUSA Competition in Action Skills. James Sheek, Principal-Yadkinville Elementary School, stated he was glad to have the Board of Education at Yadkinville School. He also stated we have a lot of things going on as they saw our choir. He stated this choir is a new thing to Yadkinville that the music teacher has started. He stated that music teachers mean a great deal to us and he hoped the Board would keep this in mind when determining the budget.

#13-035 On motion by Hampton, seconded by Hemric, the Board approved the Approval of April 8, 2013 minutes of the Board of Education. Minutes: #13-036 On a motion by Allred, seconded by Hampton, the Board approved the Consent Agenda: consent agenda items listed below: Budget Amendments #42-48 Contract for Security Hardware awarded to HKS Security New Student Representatives for Board of Education Forbush High School s recommendation is: Colton Horn. Colton is involved in Hunter Safety and is in the top 10 of his class. Colton is the son of Scott and Lori Horn of East Bend. Starmount High School s recommendation is: Madison McLellan. Madison is involved in tennis, swim team, track & field, HOSA, FCA, NTHS, NS, Yearbook and is a Junior Marshall. In addition, Madison is certified in CPR, Microsoft Word, PPT & Publisher. Madison is the daughter of Shane and Margaret Macemore of Boonville. Yadkin Early College s recommendation is: Isabeau Clark. Isabeau is involved in competitive dance since she was 8-years old. She is involved with the swim team, student government (9 th grade), Chorus, Prom Committee and will have completed 25 credits of college classes after this semester. Isabeau is the daughter of Chris and Mitchell Clark of Hamptonville. Advanced Credit Agreement Between Yadkin County Schools and Surry Community College #13-037 On motion by Hampton, seconded by Dezern, the Board approved the Professional, Tenure Professional, Tenure and Probationary Contracts as presented. and Probationary Contracts: #13-038 On motion by Hemric, seconded by Allred, the Board approved Director of Chris Lyon as the Director of Human Resources. Human Resources:

#13-039 On motion by Baity, seconded by Dezern, the Board approved a special Starmount High placement of Scott Carter as Assistant Principal of Starmount High School. School Assistant Principal: Information Items: 1. Administration has received the following resignations: Donnie Garris Custodian at Forbush High School retiring effective July 1, 2013. Sylvia Wingler Teacher at Starmount High School retiring effective June 1, 2013. Robert Cooper Teacher at Yadkin Success Academy retiring effective June 1, 2013. Janice Wooten EC Instructional Specialist resigning effective June 1, 2013. James Blythe Guidance Counselor at Starmount High School retiring effective October 1, 2013 Teresa Logan Executive Director Student Services at the Central Office retiring effective July 1, 2013. Matthew Parunak Band Director at Forbush High School resigning effective May 30, 2013. Amanda Brewer Guidance at Boonville and Jonesville Elementary resigning effective May 30, 2013. Wendy Hutchens OOST Group Leader at Fall Creek Elementary resigning effective April 26, 2013. 2. The Board reviewed student releases. Dr. Hobbs informed the Board that last week the NCHSAA changed the policy that any across county transfers that were approved, those students would have to sit out of athletics for 365 days. 3. The Board reviewed contracts/purchases. 4. The Board reviewed the May schedule of activities. Comments Howard McKnight thanked the student representatives for being part of the Board. Kayla Smith stated she would like to thank the Board for allowing Impact Yadkin to use Forbush Middle and Forbush High Schools. Rex Baity stated he would like to thank Yadkinville Elementary School for allowing us to be here today. He also stated he was looking forward to all the graduations. In addition, he stated he hoped everyone had a good summer. Diane Hampton thanked Yadkinville Elementary School for hosting the Board meeting and wished the student representatives the best in the future. She also stated she would like to thank Tammy Miller and the staff for all their hard work for the Celebration Banquet tonight.

Jennifer Hemric thanked Dr. Sheek for hosting the Board. She also stated that this week is teacher appreciation and she would like to thank our teachers for all the hard work they do day in and day out. She also stated she hoped everyone had a good summer. Lynn Allred congratulated Rachel Casstevens and Joshua Barnes on their state awards. He also stated it was a pleasure to see Sara McCall here today and that he appreciated her volunteer work. Frank Brown stated he felt the student representatives had done an exceptional job and that it was good to see Sara again. He also stated that the Board will miss Karen Matthews. He thanked Karen and stated he appreciated what she has done. He also congratulated Chris Lyon on his new job. Joe Dezern stated he appreciate the fine work the student representatives had done and wished them the very best. He also stated it was good to see Sara McCall. In addition he stated he appreciated the work that Karen Matthews has done for the school system and the students and that he has enjoyed working with Karen. Mr. Dezern informed the Board that he attended Farm Day at Lone Hickory arena and thought this was a really good activity and location. He also stated he thought this was a good way to get our students involved. He also stated he attended Jonesville s Beta Club induction where they inducted 20-25 students and he was glad to see that schools are recognizing our students. Dr. Hobbs stated he would like to reiterate what Mr. Dezern had said regarding the Ag Awareness Day and he also felt this was a great program. He also stated that he heard one student ask an interesting question to the beekeeper who was talking to second graders about the queen bee. The student asked Why did the queen bee make all the men do all the work. Dr. Hobbs informed the group to make sure you keep up with legislation and what is going on especially regarding the school vouchers and the Excellent Schools Act as well as talking with legislators regarding the discretionary cut. Howard McKnight informed the Board he received an invitation for the Board members to attend Yadkin Early College s graduation and also a luncheon on May 17 at 1:00p.m. at the Early College. He stated he would like to thank Dr. Sheek and Yadkinville Elementary School for hosting the meeting and for all the young people who sang. He stated it was good to see Sara McCall again. In addition he stated he attended the State Teacher of the Year presentation and thoroughly enjoyed it. He wished Karen Matthews the best in her retirement and thanked her for all she has done and for the kidding and ribbing they had done. He also wished Teresa Logan the best in her retirement and thanked her for her dedicated service. He stated the next Board meeting would be June 3 at the central office and that the meal would be at 5:30p.m. and closed would begin at 6:00p.m. followed immediately with the open session. #13-040 On motion by Baity, seconded by Hemric, the Board adjourned at 10:40a.m. Adjournment: Dr. L.
