Joe Sellers, beef specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, will discuss which practices make grazing more effective and how management-intensive grazing can work on Iowa farms. He will also discuss where opportunities exist to expand grasslands in Iowa during the Iowa Learning Farms webinar, set for noon on Wed., Oct. 18. I work with producers on all types of management practices, but I am very passionate about getting more perennial forages into diversified livestock systems in Iowa, Sellers said. The Iowa Learning Farms monthly webinar series will take place on the third Wednesday of each month at noon. This winter, Rebecca Vittetoe will be doing some more classroom type sessions of Agronomy in the Field with three other Agronomy in the Field cohorts across the state. You will have the option to join these sessions via Zoom, a web-conference program. Commercial Pesticide Classes Join us starting on Wednesday, September 6th through December 6th for our Commercial Pesticide and Manure Training Classes. Most classes are two and a half hours long and have a minimal cost associated with each different class. The following class areas are offered: Roadside, Forest, & Aquatic Pest Management, Mosquito & Public Health Pest Management, Ornamental & Turf Applicators, Fumigation, Commercial Ag, Pest Control Operators, Seed Treatment, and Confinement Site Manure Application. New and returning members may now enroll for the 2017-2018 4-H year. Returning families, please ensure you do NOT create a new profile for your Clover Kid or 4-Her. If you are unable to log in successfully, contact the Extension office and we can help you through this process. Again this year, families will have the option to pay their enrollment fee online. The fee for a 4-H member (4th through 12th grade) is $40 and the fee for a Clover Kid (K-3rd) is $15. Please note, if you choose to pay online, payment will need to be in full and payment will be processed through each child s profile separately. If your club charges an additional fee or provides reimbursement, this will be handled directly through your club. WARREN COUNTY EXTENSION AND OUTREACH 4-H HORIZON October 2017 Jennifer Miler, County Youth Coordinator milerj@iastate.edu; 515-961-6237 National 4-H Week October 1-7 Did you know 4-H is the nation s largest youth development and empowerment organization, cultivates confident youth who tackle the issues that matter most in their communities right now. In the United States, the 4-H programs empowers six million young people through the 110 land-grant universities in more than 3,000 local extension offices. Outside the United States, independent, country-led 4-H organization empower one million youth people in more than 50 countries. For the 75th consecutive year, millions of youth, parents, volunteer and alumni across the county will be celebrating National 4-H Week during the first week in October. We know there are some amazing things happening here in Warren County with our 4-H ers, make sure to let your community, county and world know it! 4-H Enrollment Continues If you prefer not to pay online, you are welcome to stop by the Extension office and pay with cash, check or credit card. For special circumstances such as a member requesting financial assistance, please contact Jennifer at milerj@iastate.edu or 515-961-6237. Remember to re-enroll before November 15th to avoid a $25 per member late fee. The late fee will go into place beginning November 16th. For returning members, please be sure to review all your information; this includes contact and medical information, emergency contact, primary club and projects of interest. This is the extension office s primary source of information and we depend on families to keep it updated. County Fair Livestock and Premium Checks Livestock Sale Checks are now available for pick-up at Region s Bank in Indianola. New this year, checks must be cashed within 60 days or they will become void. Livestock Premium Checks were mailed on October 2nd. New this year, checks must be cashed within 90 days or they will become void with no re-issues. Exhibit Building Premium Checks were mailed to the leaders of your 2016-17 primary club on October 2nd. Each club utilizes these checks differently so please ask your leader with any questions. 4-H Recognition and Awards Ceremony The Warren County 4-H Recognition and Awards Ceremony hosted by Warren County Senior 4-H will be held this year on Sunday, November 19th at 4:30 pm at the Milo Community Center which is located at 113 Main St. Milo, 50166. During this ceremony, Senior 4-H ers and leaders will recognize members who completed record books, 4-H ers with perfect club attendance, Clover Kids, Outstanding Awards, and much more. This event is open to all Warren County Clover Kids, 4-H ers and their families. Light refreshments will be provided, however no RSVP is needed. We hope you will join us for an afternoon of highlights, achievements and recognition of your accomplishments over the last year! Midwest Heritage Youth Heifer Program Ready to start a new project? The Midwest Heritage Youth Heifer Program was designed to help future young farmers gain interest and knowledge of the beef cattle industry by awarding bred heifers to program recipients. Midwest Heritage will grant up to five 7th and 8th graders, three bred heifers each. The program will span five years. During this time, recipients are responsible for management of the herd including daily care, records and breeding. At the conclusion of the five years, recipients are responsible for paying back the market value of the three bred heifers. Students from Fremont, Lucas, Madison, Wayne, Warren County are invited to apply. Applications are being accepted until October 31, and can be found online at www.mhbank.com/youth-heifer. Youth Committee Join Us! Want to share your voice and help make Warren County 4-H decisions? Come join the 4-H Youth Committee! This committee includes both adults and youth who create a partnership with one another. Youth are able to have a voice and discuss what is important to 4-H ers and what they would like to see We love when groups or individuals contact the Extension office looking for a way to connect with local 4-H ers. The Good Samaritan Society in Indianola has a large number of residents who are 4-H Alumni and would like to connect with current 4-H ers. There are many opportunities for you or your club to take on as a leadership or citizenship project among many other things! in the program. Come join us and help Warren County 4-H be the best it can be! Community Service Opportunity Next Meeting: Thursday, October 19th at 6:30 pm. at the Warren County Here are a few ideas of activities or projects from the residents: Present your fair project to us in preparation for the prior County Fair each year. We enjoy helping 4-H ers with their current projects. We love dogs! Come practice in front of us. Host one of your monthly meetings here and invite us to attend. Give your club presentation here. 4-H Volunteers Are you interested in joining our team of awesome 4-H volunteers? Would you like to help with workshops and help 4-H ers gain a new skill? We simply want to know what 4-H ers are doing these days. These are just a few of the many activities that you or your club could pursue! A true leader gives back to move their community forward. Iowa Youth Straw Poll Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate enthusiastically embraces the 4-H mission of engaging youth to reach their fullest potential. Their office strives to help students learn more about elections and give students the opportunity to practice voting. For several years local schools have participated and we would like to include 4-H clubs as well. The statewide poll date is November 1st but chances are your club does not meet on that date. We invite all 4-H clubs to participate, even if they have already participated with their school. The purpose of the Iowa Youth Straw Poll is to allow students to experience the voting process. The more experience they have now, the more likely they will be fully-engaged in the future with a sense of civic duty, a 4-H focus. Join the Intermediate Leadership Team! 4-H ers in 7th, 8th and 9th grade are invited to come and learn leadership skills while helping to plan county-wide activities. This team meets on the 1st Sunday of the month at 6:30 pm at the Warren County This group plans, organizes and delivers Join Senior 4-H Are you a high school student in grades 9th-12th looking to further your 4-H experience? Come join a fun group of older 4-H ers who work together to plan various events such as Awards Night, at least 2 county-wide activities for 4-H ers. This is a great opportunity to learn how to lead a group and work with others while having fun. If so, be sure to mark your calendar for Tuesday, October 10th from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at the Extension office for New Volunteer Training. This training is required for those who have become a 4-H volunteer for the first time within the last twelve months. RECORD BOOKS Leaders should have collected your members record books and may have already started the reviewing process. An e-mail was sent September 29th with detailed information and specific forms to help you complete this process. Nominations are due to the Extension office by October 13th. PERFECT ATTENDANCE Along with record keeping books and project pin nominations, club leaders are also asked what members achieved perfect attendance for the 2016-2017 4-H year. Banner Club This award is provided to clubs who are the most active in Warren County, and involving youth and leaders in many events and activities. It is very desirable to attain the description of being a 4-H Banner Club and as you may have noticed this during the 2017 county fair, those clubs who were awarded this award had a beautiful sash displayed along with their club booth. These completed forms are due to the Extension office by Friday, October 13th before 12:30 pm. Good Luck! Mark Your Calendar's Weigh-In Dates Beef weigh-in is scheduled for Saturday, December 30th from 7:00 am -8:00 am for county only market beef. From 8:00 am until 10:00 am we will tag and retinal scan those market beef being nominated for the Iowa State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben. Sheep/Goat weigh-in is scheduled for Saturday, April 28th from 7:00 am-8:00 am for county only sheep/goats. From 8:00 am until 10:00 am we will tag and retinal scan those animals being nominated for the Iowa State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben. Breeding Sheep are required to attend weigh in for ID purposes only. If animals are being nominated for the Iowa State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben they will be retinal imaged at this time as well. Dairy goats do not need to attend weigh-in.
