St Catherine of Siena T: 9743 2166 E: principal@scmeltonwest.catholic.edu.au W: www.scmeltonwest.catholic.edu.au NEWSLETTER Term 4, Week 10 December 8th, 2015 Dear Families, As we come to the end of the school year and prepare to celebrate Christmas and summer holidays we are also preparing to say goodbye to some staff members. Ms Ophelia Anderson has been with us for a two years and in her time with us she has always had the children's best interests at heart. She has a gentle way of working with each student so she can get to know their strengths and challenges in order to best assist them in becoming independent learners. We wish her all the very best as she moves on to continue her teaching career. Ophelia is also getting married over the holidays so we wish her all the very best as she and her partner begin this new phase of their life together. Mrs Tracy Brewis also joined the St Catherine s community in 2014 to take over from a staff member on maternity leave. Tracy worked hard to ensure a smooth transition for the Prep children in her care. In her time with us Tracy has worked collegially with staff to further support children and families. Tracy leaves us to further pursue her teaching career and we wish her all the very best in these endeavours. Ms Belle Campbell joined the St Catherine s community in 2014 to take over from a staff member on maternity leave. Belle worked hard to ensure a smooth transition for the students when she took over from Mrs Danielle Jackson in 2014. In her short time with us she has supported the students in Year 5 and their families and has taken on new learning in our Year 5 space. We wish her all the very best for 2016 and beyond. Mrs Shirley Higgins had been with us for several years in a support role and in that time has worked with many children to support their learning. Shirley s gentle demeanor and manner with the children has made her a much loved member of staff. We thank her for the many contributions she has made and also for the care and support she has shown to all. We wish her all the very best as she moves on to many new and exciting things in the future. Ms Tina Hogan had been at St Catherine's for five years and in that time has been the initial contact for all who enter the school. Tina has managed to juggle the many tasks required of office staff with a smile and friendly word for all. We thank her for the many ways she has supported all in our community and for the care and attention she has shown to those in need of support. We wish her all the best for 2016 and beyond. Ms DeAnna Papadopoulos joined us during the year to take over from a staff member on extended leave. DeAnna has worked in the Year 3 space and has been an important part of this team. In her short time with us she has worked hard to support the children in Year 3 and has taken the time to get to know her children so she can best support their learning. We thank DeAnna for her dedication to the children and families within her care and wish her all the very best for her future endeavours. Ms Laz Ninkovic joined St Catherine s in 2014. In the short time she has been with us she has always had the best interests of the students in her care at the forefront of all she does. Her creativity and fresh ideas have meant that the classroom was always a vibrant and engaging learning space. We wish her all the very best for 2016 and beyond. Mrs Sharni Thomas leaves us at the end of this year for a period of Maternity Leave. This year Sharni has worked in the Year 6 space and has been a vital part of this team. We thank Sharni for the way in which she has contributed to the many aspects of school life throughout this year and also for the care and interest she shows to the children and families within her care. We wish her all the very best for the safe arrival of her first child early in the new year. I know that many of you have worked closely with Ophelia, Tracy, Belle, Shirley, Tina, Laz, DeAnna and Sharni over a number of years and will join with me in wishing them all the very best. We will miss them all greatly but know that not only will they always be remembered as important members of the St Catherine of Siena community and hold a place in all of our hearts. Next year we welcome new staff members to St Catherine of Siena. Mrs Kylie Hoey will be joining our Year 5 team, Ms Caitlin Walker and Mr Blake Pittman will be joining our Year 4 team, Ms Seona Payne will be joining our Year 2 team, Ms Bianca Ignarro will be our new LoTE teacher and Ms Kristie Browning will be our new Wellbeing Leader. We welcome all of these new staff and wish them well as they begin their time with us in 2016. Have a great week Advent Week 3 - The Candle of Joy The Shepherd s Candle On the third Sunday of Advent, we light the Shepherd's Candle. It wasn't the rich and famous who came to worship Jesus that first Christmas Eve, but poor shepherds. As we light this candle, God reminds us that, "as you have done it to the least of these, you have done it to me." He invites us, as his children, the "poor in Spirit," to come into His presence and worship Him. The story of the shepherds is recorded in the Gospel According to Saint Luke, in the second chapter: And in that region, there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, "Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased." When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told to them concerning this child; and all who heard it marvelled at what the shepherds told them. Carmel Marantelli PRINCIPAL
