CLOVER CORNER County Extension Agent for, Katie Jury Midnight Walkers Community Service Club Hopkins County 75 Cornwall Drive Madisonville, KY 42431-8780 (270) 821-3650 Fax: (270) 825-5011 hopkins.ca.uky.edu Winter 2018 Like us on Facebook! The Hopkins County 4-H Facebook page is a great way to keep up with upcoming events and to see coverage of all the great activities and events right after they take place! Midnight Walkers Community Service Club is a perfect club to join that works as a team to help Hopkins County. Club members have volunteered at the Hopkins County Humane Society to walk and play with the animals. They have volunteered to ring the bell for the Salvation Army and have other wonderful ideas planned for the future, such as ornament making and caroling. Please mark your calendars for their upcoming meetings to join in on the giving and fun! They will meet December 13, January 10, February 7, March 14, April 11, and May 9. I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living for my club, my community, my country, and my world. Hopkins County 4-H Please Note ~ If schools are closed due to inclement weather, all meetings and activities scheduled for that day will be canceled as well. creed, religion, political belief, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, marital status, genetic information, age, veteran status, or physical or mental disability. Teen Summit 4-H Kentucky Teen Summit is quickly approaching! Hopkins County will be attending Teen Summit on March 14-16, 2019 in Jabez, Ky. and has five spots available. This is a great opportunity for sixth, seventh and eighth graders to develop their leadership, communication skills, and citizenship. In addition, they are able to participate in other exciting activities such as volleyball, hiking, STEM experiments, dancing and other outdoor activities. Please stop by the Hopkins County Extension Office to pick up an application. We can also mail or email them upon request. 4-H Sewing 4-H Sewing is taught by Rita Cartwright (Granny) and helpers, Traci Spivey, and 4-H Program Assistant Sherri Friend. This is the second year for 4-H Sewing with all new students. The first year, students learned how to sew on a button, and they made a laundry bag, pillow cases and a quilt square. This year, we had Sarah Scott from Webster County Master Sewers come and teach students about fabrics and how to choose the right fabric for the right job. They were also able to play a few games such as learning the name and types of material. They also did a skills test on the names of each tool. The students have already learned how to sew on a button and will now have a choice of making a laundry bag, tote bag or skirt, pillow cases or a pillow, and a quilt square. These are all first year sewer items that can be entered into the county fair. Stuck in the Middle Stuck in the Middle, an exciting two-day overnight camp for middle school youth, was held Nov. 5-6 at West Kentucky 4-H Camp in Dawson Springs for the third year in a row. Hopkins County was excited to have three wonderful youth participate, Natalie Oates, Ashley Turner and James Turner. We also had great volunteers, Lucas Arnold and Cassidy Brasher. The youth were able to participate in many different activities from outdoor adventure, cooking, arts and crafts, game it up, drone discovery, project me, breakout games, GPS and gun safety. The Hopkins County Cooperative Extension Office will be closed Monday, December 24, 2018 through Tuesday, January 1, 2019 for the holidays. We will re-open at 8 a.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2019.

4-H Appreciation Night Hopkins County 4-H was able to celebrate our awesome volunteers and 4-H members! The 4-H Appreciation Night was held on October 4 at the Hopkins County Extension Office. This event has always proven to be a wonderful time and a great way to show appreciation to the outstanding volunteers for the 2017-2018 program year. We were also able to appreciate youth for their volunteerism and accomplishments beyond the county. We want to thank everyone again for their dedication to the Hopkins County 4-H program. 4-H Livestock Club 4-H Clover Buds The 4-H Livestock Club has been having wonderful handson learning opportunities. Cash Bowles recently brought his poultry to the office for all of the members to learn more about. The club meets once a month at the Extension Office and members are able to learn more about caring for, showing, judging, animal anatomy, nutrition, and breeds from their outstanding leaders. Please mark your calendars for future meetings - January 17, February 21, March 21, April 18, and May 16. 4-H Clover Buds are off to a great start! They have had several successful meetings and created many crafts and healthy snacks. Shown above are Clover Buds attendees at their last meeting where they created turkeys from their footprints and scarecrows out of popsicle sticks. Each item is eligible to be entered into the Hopkins County Fair for Clover level in 2019. 4-H GROWS HERE
