Guide to the William Terrell Hodges Photographic Collection, 1950-1994 Descriptive Summary Creator Title Dates 1950-1994 Bulk Extent Abstract Language of Material Accession Number Repository These prints were collected by William Terrell Hodges William Terrell Hodges Photographic Collection 1950s-1970s 3 Boxes, 2 Linear feet This collection contains prints of former and current judges and clerks who served in the Middle District dating between 1950-1994. The materials are written in English HSC2012-01 Middle District of Florida Historical Society,401 West Central Boulevard, Ste 1200, Orlando, FL 32801-0120. Biographical/Historical Note Congress established the Middle District of Florida on July 30, 1962 to serve thirty-three counties that had formerly been in the Southern District. The new district stretched from the Georgia border at Fernandina almost to the Everglades. Three Southern District judges moved to the Middle District: Bryan Simpson, Joseph Lieb, and William McRae. In 1962, George Young was appointed district judge for all three district courts and was permanently assigned to the Middle District in 1966 where he now serves as a senior judge in the Orlando Division. In 1966 two additional district judges joined the court: Charles Ray Scott and Benjamin Krentzman. Divisions were established in Jacksonville, Tampa, and Orlando during the first decade. Divisions in Ocala and Ft. Myers followed. By 2006, the Middle District of Florida Historical Society and the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida partnered and began work on the Federal Judges of the Middle District Courts Project. The goal of the oral history project was to record the history of the federal court system in the State of Florida from the judges' point of view. file:///c /eadcb/eadfiles/hsc2012-01.html (1 of 5)9/16/2013 3:20:33 PM

William Terrell Hodges was born on April 28, 1934, in Lakes Wales, Florida. He attended the University of Florida (UF) beginning in 1951 with the intention of studying engineering. Hodges shifted his undergraduate studies and graduated with a degree in business administration. After business school, Hodges went to law school at UF and graduated in 1958. He received his first job that same year at a prominent law practice in Tampa. In March 1959, Hodges took the bar exam and passed. On December 15, 1971, Hodges was appointed to the court. Some of the more prominent cases he oversaw delved into subjects such as desegration and criminal trials. From 1982 to 1989, Hodges became chief judge, and reached senior status in 1999. Hodges is married to Peggy Hodges and has three children. Collection Scope and Content The prints were arranged first according to the size of the photograph due to there being mulitple oversized items, then alphabetically. Restrictions Copyright Statement Unpublished manuscripts are protected by copyright. Permission to publish, quote or reproduce must be secured from the repository and the copyright holder. Related Material The Federal Judges of the Middle District Courts Project Collection (HSA2010-02) at the Historical Society contains transcripts and supplemental materials from interviews conducted with various judges from the Middle District, including Judge Hodges. The Federal Judges Project is a collaborative effort between the Middle District Court of Florida and the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida to record the history of the federal court system in the State of Florida from the judges' point of view. file:///c /eadcb/eadfiles/hsc2012-01.html (2 of 5)9/16/2013 3:20:33 PM
