Northampton, MA 01063 U.S.A. Telephone: (413) 585-3050 Fax: (413) 585-3054 E-mail: gradstdy@smith.edu Application for Non-U.S. Citizens Read instructions carefully and retain for your files. Academic Program The academic year at Smith consists of two semesters. The first semester begins in early September and ends in the third week of December. The second semester begins at the end of January and lasts until early May, with a one-week vacation in the early spring. Classes are not in session during the five weeks between semesters, and for the first two weeks of that period, the college houses are closed and students living in college housing must leave campus. For the three weeks prior to the beginning of the second semester, however, the college offers an Interterm program for which many students return to campus. Interterm is a time when students can join in informal courses and seminars, undertake special research projects, or investigate career options by working in internships. Some students simply take advantage of the time to enjoy the cultural, artistic, and recreational facilities of the college without the pressures of semester-time course work. There is no additional charge for the Interterm period; it is covered by the normal semester fees. Normally, no summer courses of study are offered at Smith, and during summer vacation, international students return home or support themselves in the U.S. Campus Life Smith provides a wide variety of campus activities along with its rigorous academic life. Students are encouraged to participate in artistic, athletic, cultural, and religious organizations. During the year there are over 70 lectures, more than 65 concerts and recitals, 50 performances of dance and theatre productions, 25 talks and lectures at the Museum of Art, and 165 films shown on campus. Most of these activities are free. The college has a vigorous sports program and 15 intercollegiate teams. Smith has two fullsized gymnasia, squash courts, an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, and a ¾ mile running track, and 20 acres of playing fields. An active international students organization offers a chance for students from other countries to get together to share experiences and the challenge of studying in the U.S. Functions like International Students Day on campus allow the students to share their culture, traditions, and food with those of other students. All international students are welcome and encouraged to join the International Students Organization at Smith. Admission Admission to is highly competitive. Before submitting an application, read this pamphlet carefully making sure that Smith offers the type of graduate education you seek and that you have the necessary qualifications and resources to make a realistic application. Please visit our website to check the deadline for your program of interest: https://www.smith.edu/admissionaid/how-apply/graduate Test Requirement If the language of instruction in your undergraduate school and/or the language spoken at home is not English, scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) are required. The web address for the TOEFL is http://www.toefl.org; for the IELTS, http://www.ielts.org, and for the GRE, http://www.ets.org/gre. You are eligible to reapply for aid each year of graduate study at Smith. If you do not apply for aid, it is assumed by the college that you will be able to arrange for your entire support throughout your graduate years.
