Kindergarten Students use language to develop reading skills and to recognize that print/sign/pictures/objects represent words through exposure to a variety of grade appropriate expository and literary text. Students identify some of the basic elements of a story, such as character and setting. Students respond to stories that are reality or fantasy. Students begin to learn the steps in the writing process. Students engage in prewriting activities with others to generate ideas during class discussion. Students engage in drafting activities when they identify a topic to write about. Students draft stories using pictures or objects. Students participate with pictures, objects, gestures to write about a specific purpose and audience. Students, with modeling and assistance, write in a variety of modes including expressive, expository, or literary response. Students begin to learn the components of written English. Components include handwriting, letter formation, and creating a sentence or message. Students listen and respond to oral communication. Students communicate clear messages. Grade 1 Students begin decoding words by matching oral words to print/objects/sign/gestures and applying awareness to sounds and letters. Students develop skills to distinguish between the sounds or symbols of phonemes and syllables in a word. Students acquire new vocabulary in all grade-level content areas. This knowledge is applied to identify high frequency words/objects/pictures/sign/gestures. Students listen to and begin to read a variety of grade-level-appropriate literary and expository texts. Students read simple print, objects, or gestures to answer yes/no questions. Students identify main idea and characters in stories heard or read and order a sequence of events from the story. Students respond to and identify words, pictures, gestures, or objects in a story that create an auditory and/or visual experience. Students identify between fiction and nonfiction. Students use the steps of the writing process to create a message for a variety of purposes and audiences. Students participate in organizing ideas and details with assistance and modeling during prewriting. Students compose simple messages that relate to a central idea and contain supporting detail.
