Year Three Venture into Culture, Sport and Mathematics Year Three are loving their French Lessons with Mrs. Woolnough. They have learnt greetings, counting, days and months, and most importantly, how to order pastries in a café. This knowledge was put to the test when the class visited Les Gourmandises patisserie in Moruya. Joseph, the French-speaking owner and artisan pastry chef met the students at the door and so began a wonderful morning. He quizzed them on their names, helped them with their greetings and served beautiful treats. After ensuring that all the students had eaten, Joseph took us into his lab de cuisine. There he demonstrated rolling croissant pastry, then to our surprise had students beating pastry, rolling sheets of pastry and butter, then forming individual pain au chocolat pastries. Staying with culture, the students have continued to enjoy harvesting and cooking their own produce. The pastry theme led us to create cheese and spinach turnovers and also rhubarb and apple turnovers. These were enjoyed by the students and also sold to help with Nyah s Love Africa fund-raising appeal. The students enjoyed cooking the pastries, but they absolutely loved the challenge of selling pastries to students ranging from Kindergarten through to Year Twelve. In small groups, they ventured along the path to the library selling their produce to staff and students alike. I would like to thank the mums and grandmothers who helped in the kitchen.
Year Three Venture into Culture, Sport and Mathematics The Olympic Spirit had a huge impact on our mathematics! Year Three ran mini-olympic competitions each Mathematics lesson. As students jumped and threw, their peers recorded their results. The athletics events set the scene for a crash course on tape measures, metres and centimetres. The students were particularly keen to have accurate records as pride and Olympic glory was at stake. Finally, I would like to share a few snippets from recent lessons. Our Bicycle Art unit has been a huge hit. While searching the Internet for bike images, the BMX riders were very keen to show the class that their images are on the BMX club website! Returning to Mathematics, I was astounded at the enthusiasm for drawing circles with a compass. The students drew circles, dartboards, flowers and hexagons. The Volume and Capacity lessons also gave an insight into the enthusiasm shown by these students. They measured and compared the capacity of containers and grew more familiar with the units of litres and millilitres. Finally, I would like to share with you the joy the class feels when their friend and adopted grandmother, Glenda arrives. She listens to the students read, looks over their writing with them, and recently has begun to have them teach her how to use a computer! The Olympics may be over, but the fun and learning continue in Year Three. Uniform Shop Notice The uniform shop will be closed the afternoon of Thursday, 1 September. Apologies for any inconvenience.
