MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR Dear Lions, Lions Ladies, Lionesses and Leo's I cannot believe that this will be my last newsletter. Thank you to all that attended the Incoming Officers Weekend, we had a great weekend of learning and fellowship. The trainers were great and I thank you for your dedication. PCC Cliff Hocking thank you for giving up your weekend to help District 410C to be inspired after your talks. We really appreciate it. To my Cabinet I thank you for all your hard work and dedication this year. It was great working with you all. To the most important people in our organization is the hard working Lions, thank you for all your hard work and dedication. You all have done some amazing service projects this year. You have made me proud to be your Governor this year. To the Cowies Lions thanks for your support and love during this year. I have had laughter and tears and you have always been there to support me. To DGE Martin congratulations and may your year be successful and filled with pride and fun. To the incoming Cabinet please support your Governor as his year also depends on your dedication for the year. To the incoming Presidents congratulations may your year be successful and fun. Thanks to District 410C for the honour of serving as your District Governor, it has been hard work, disappointment of the closure of clubs, enjoyment visiting the clubs. We need to look at ourselves and think before we bite somebody s head off, give constructive criticism and don t just find fault. What do you fear in your everyday life? One common answer would probably be to be criticized. To stand there and hear those words streaming out of someone's mouth and feel stupid or feel rejected or like you are getting smaller and smaller. Judging others is part of human nature. Our eyes are set in our head in such a way that we can look at others, better than at ourselves. Yet we all have faults of our own. As humans, we are also aware that no one is perfect, including ourselves. "People who live in glass houses should not throw stones." Do you think you are perfect? Of course not! So if you want to reach your potential, look for constructive criticism. When someone is committed to reaching a goal, they will need incredible amounts of encouragement advice and tolerance. Maybe you know the saying, when you point one finger, there are three finger pointing back at you. There are also words of wisdom that say, Don t focus on the speck in your brother s eye while ignoring the log in your own. Why do we do this? Because criticisms are always centred around ourselves. When we criticise others, we do not expose them, but ourselves. We as Lions of 410c need to work on retaining Lions and building membership in our clubs and if we don t start thinking before we speak this will not happen. REMEMBER, DON T LET WHAT SOMEBODY SAYS TO YOU MAKE YOU LEAVE YOUR LIONS CLUB, SHOW THEM WHAT YOU ARE MADE OF, BE A BETTER LION THAN THAT. Lets start the New Year by remembering that we all different and be more tolerant and caring of each other as we serve our communities. 3

DISTRICT SECRETARY Sandy Beykirch has been a lion at Cowies Hill since 2009 She has been Club President, Secretary, Membership Chairman and Fundraising Chairman She has been the District Secretary for 2013/2014 Lionistic year. Attended the Lion Regional Leadership Institute in Cape Town in January. Married to Chris and they have 2 children, Donovan and Jessica whom both live in Yorkshire. UK She is a Relationship Manager for Santam and has worked for them for 25 years. DISTRICT TREASURER Ismael De Pinho is a Charter Member of the Shelly Beach Lions Club (CHARTERED 2008). Married to Deolinda - they have 2 children, Anneline (38), Roy (32) He owns two Cash Crusaders Franchises in Shelly Beach and Port Shepstone. Qualified production manager, Attended an accounting course. Ismael has been a Businessman for most of his life, mainly involved with imports & exports to Mozambique, Zambia and Angola. 5
PRESIDENTIAL INDUCTIONS LIONS CLUB OF HOWICK-uMNGENI AND LIONESS CLUB OF AZALEA We held the Presidential Induction and rededication luncheon at the Lion s Den of Howick-uMgeni on Sunday the 29 th June 2014. PDG and Cabinet Lioness Officer Stan Foley and his wife Phyllis, Outgoing Presidents Norman Chapmen (Howick-uMgeni) and Jo Olley (Azalea PDG Lion Stan Foley divesting outgoing Lion President Norman Chapman (Howick-uMngeni) of his chain of office. Incoming Lion President Norman Chapman lighting the candle representing his new year in Lionism. The afternoon was concluded with all Lions and Lionesses rededicating themselves to honour the motto of Lionism WE SERVE. 6
CLUB PROJECTS, FUNDRAISERS AND NEWS SHELLY BEACH LP CLINT BARCLAY, FUNDRAISING DIRECTOR CHARLES TAYLOR, TREASURER ISMAEL DE PINHO AND LION BRAD VISSER The Shelly Beach Lions Club once again stepped up to the plate with their catering operation over the past weekend s Time Attack and Night Drift Series at the Dezzi Raceway. The event was a great success and was held over Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the main events being the night drifting on Friday and Saturday nights. The Lions operated the food tent and refreshment stalls and served well over 2000 meals in the weekend. The funds raised will be used for community services projects in the Shelly Beach area. 7
BLOEMFONTEIN Caring with a difference: On the 6 th of June 2014 we celebrated the 2 nd anniversary of the National Tattoo-a-thon for the CHOCHouse. It all started in Cape Town in 2012, with only 10 tattoo studios participating in tattooing to raise funds for the CHOC House. They raised R70 000.00 for CHOC on that day and since then expanded to other provinces and more studios participating. This year over 48 studios participated nationwide. They are still tallying the funds raised from all the studios. Two of our Lions from Bloemfontein Host went to show their support for the tattoo-a-thon. Lion Karin and soon to be Lion Maxine went to add to their collection of not-so traditional works of art. Here we go with Maxine going first, putting her fear of needles to one side. AND WE BEGIN With the end product of a new addition and knowing we did some good. 8
RAMSGATE L R 1 ST PRIZE: PAT & BRUCE HULLEY, AUDREY & GEORGE LEGGITT AND LION JENNY HENRY L R BOOBIE PRIZE: COENIE SCHOEMAN, LION JENNY ELBA MULLER AND JANICE SELKON The Ramsgate Lions held their monthly Bring and Braai Quiz evening. This event is getting more popular and was very well attended. Approximately 50 people attended. Teams were from four to five participants. Nice to see the youngsters helping their parents with the answers. Great fun was had at the marking of the questions, with shouts of joy or moans and groans depending on how the teams answered their questions. Team Plonkers won the evening, and received a voucher for supper for 4 from La Capanina Restaurant. The Zed team came last and received a magnificent booby prize of delicious Camembert Cheese sponsored by Arnie Hofman who is distributing these Cheeses made in Howick. SISTER TONYA JANSEN VAN RENSBURG TESTING VAL DONALDSON JACOB CATCHPOLE TAKING CANDICE HOOPER S BLOOD PRESSURE The Ramsgate Lions Club once again held a sugar testing morning at the Hibiscus Mall Margate. The Kawzulu Natal Private Ambulance staff joined us and tested blood pressures for the public. This combination worked very well and hopefully they will join us in our next testing morning. A total of 214 men and woman were tested with a total 19 people out of range. We were assisted by Sister Tonya Jansen Van Rensburg 9
VRYHEID LIONS GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY (VRYHEID HERALD) The wonderful support that the Lions received from the community for the Mayfair this year, with record crowds, enabled the Lions to hand over R7,000 worth of necessities to Dawn Scott and Cecelia van Wyk of Vryheid Hospice 10
Lions Cindy, Ryan, Laurette, Peter and Teresa hand over R7,000 to Laurette Schoeman who also serves on the SPCA committee. Many, many thanks go to the public of Vryheid who made these donations possible. One of the beneficiaries of the Lions Mayfair this year is the Vryheid CPF, here represented by Dennis and Annette Jones. Dennis was handed a R7,000 donation by Lion Cindy Mossop 11

MELVIN WAS THERE TO HELP AS WELL. THE FIRST RUNNER THROUGH OUR STATION AND THEY JUST KEPT COMING FOR THE NEXT 7 HOURS. We are very proud to have been involved with running the refreshment station for the Comrades Marathon on Cowies Hill for 35 years. It is not just a matter of being there on the day, it takes months of planning. We have to get water and electricity to the sight and with out one of the residents close to the sight we would not be able to do this. There is the ordering of toilets, tables, ice, the DJ for the down runs as well as security and this year we had to ensure that the municipality completed the road works on the hill in time. Then we have to organise a horse and trailer to pick up the packets of water, energy drinks, fruit, biscuits etc. A big thank you must go Eire Construction that have lent us the horse and trailer with a driver for the last couple of years. Then of course there is making sure that we have enough people to help on the day and ensuring that everything is collected and or delivered in time, before the road closes. After the race there road from our station to the next one then has to be cleaned and thanks to Roy from Pinetown Lions with his truck and blower we ensure that all litter is collected and then it is still a matter of getting the hoses, buckets brooms, banners and the list goes on and on, back to the club. Thanks must go to all the volunteers that assist and a special thanks to Lion Jane, Lions Dave and Karl for all their hard work before and afterwards. 13

I miss being the age I was when I thought I would have my life together by the time I was the age I am now. Sometimes the easiest way to get your husband to do something is to simply suggest that he s just too old to do it anymore! OUT AND ABOUT WITH THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR Past District Governor Denis Meyer was presented with an appreciation award by District Governor Heather Hardman on behalf of Council Chairman, Mike Newlands. The award is in recognition of outstanding service and commitment to Lions Multiple District 410, especially in the field of Information Technology for the present fiscal year. TRAINING WEEKEND (KZN) What a fantastic turn out to our Training weekend held over the weekend of the 20 th to 22 nd June. We had just under 90 delegates attend and from all reports they found it most informative as well as enjoying the social side of it. A special thanks must go to PCC Cliff Hocking for giving up his weekend to assist us with the training; I think that he is an honorary member of 410c 18
FROM THE EDITOR S DESK This news letter is the last of the Lionistic year 2013/2014 which also brings to an end District Governor Heather s year. DG Heather we as the Lions of District 410c would like to thank you once again for your dedication and hard work. You visited every club in our District, often going again to special functions as the Guest of Honour. As most of you are aware, I will be continuing as the Editor of The District Contact, so please keep sending your articles. Although it is great getting photographs I need a story telling us about the photographs to make it interesting reading. I would like to thank those clubs that have sent articles almost every month and encourage those that have not to please do so. At the training weekend it was suggested that we enclose photographs of the Cabinet so you will recognise them when you see them. As you will have seen I have started this month with the Incoming District Governor, his Secretary and Treasurer and will hopefully be able to get photographs of a couple of Cabinet members for each magazine in the next few months.
