MATTHEW GIBNEY CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL 30 Munday Road, High Wycombe WA 6057 Phone: 6216 8400 Email: admin@gibney.wa.edu.au Website: www.gibney.wa.edu.au NEWSLETTER No. 29 13th September 2018 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? (Matthew 6:26-27) Dear Parents, Friends and Students Congratulations to Mrs Keddie and the Year 5 class for their excellent assembly last Friday. It is always great to see how much learning has taken place in a class during the term. It also great to see the enthusiasm that is shared by the students when they present their assembly to the community. Congratulations to each of the merit award winners who were recognised by their teachers for producing excellent work over the last few weeks. This completes our assemblies for this term. Our next assembly will take place on Friday November 2nd. Year 2 will be hosting this assembly. Thank you to those parents who came along to the P&F meeting last night. The P&F do a great job building community in our school and, at the same time, raising funds in order to purchase resources for our students. I would like to thank the Executive of the P&F for the great work they do in leading this group. Please show your support in whatever way you can. On Friday 14th September the school will be participating in the Interschool Carnival. The carnival will be held on our oval. Selected students from Years 1-6 will represent our school. We congratulate them on their selection and wish them every success on the day. All are welcome to come along and support our team. Our P&F will be selling morning tea and lunch on this day. I thank them for providing this service. Next week is Week 10, meaning that the holidays are almost here. This might be a good time to touch base with your child s classroom teacher to see how your child has progressed throughout this term. As I have mentioned many times previously, frequent contact with your child s teacher is the only real way you can know how they are going at school. If you are wanting to touch base, please contact your child s teacher to make an appointment. As part of the revamp of our school uniform it was decided that it was no longer a requirement for students to wear predominately white sports shoes. The requirement changed with the clarification that no predominately fluorescent shoes could be worn. It is disappointing to note that in the last few weeks I am seeing fluorescent shoes being worn to school. The reason that we dropped the predominately white shoes was many parents were stating how difficult it was to purchase quality shoes that fitted this criterion. There are many different options available to parents regarding shoe colour without breaking the rule and purchasing fluorescent ones. I would expect cooperation in this area. A reminder to all our families that school ends on Friday 21st September and then students return on Tuesday 9th October. Have a great week! Karen Keddie & Jess Bettridge Assistant Principal s Religious Education News COLES LITTLE SHOP SWAP MEET On Thursday 6th September we had a wonderfully generous group meet in the library to swap and give away Little Shop collectables. It was a really great swap meet and we made $41 for the Catholic Missions. The atmosphere was lovely, with many just coming to share and help others out so their collections were completed. SPORT NEWS Good luck to our interschool team tomorrow! They have been training hard throughout sport, recess and lunch for tomorrow s carnival. It is sure to be a great day. In partnership with sporting schools Australia, I have become an ambassador for various sports to help promote and share the benefits children can receive from participating in organised sport. Benefits are not limited to health, but is also seen in building and forming relationships, interpersonal and social skills to name a few. If students are interested in participating in an organised sport after school, but you are not sure where to find a club, what the next step may be or even what sport to pick, I am more than happy to help. Please feel free to contact me via school e-mail or see me before school on Thursday or Friday. Through sporting schools Australia we were able to run 2 sessions of Hockey with a coach from Hockey WA, during two weeks of their PE lessons. The students were so excited to learn a new sport, learn some basic skills and play some modified hockey games. Please see the end of the newsletter and the notice board if your child is interested in continuing hockey outside of school. Shannon Andersen YEAR 3 NEWS Year 3 have been busy writing a narrative about bringing a dragon egg to school for news. It has been fantastic to see students independently adding in adjectives and wow words into their story to describe their dragon, setting and character feelings throughout their story. We are finishing up our unit on time, some students have been able to work on 24-hour time and have worked really hard on working to the hour to the exact minute on an analogue and digital clock. Christina Zurzolo BATTERY RECYCLING We are very pleased to do our bit for the environment by offering recycling collection for household batteries. You can drop your batteries off in the metal collection bin in the hallway opposite the Year 3 class room. Confirmation photos taken by Midland Photographers are now available to view and order online. Password for viewing and ordering is confirmation2018 (all one word and all lower case). Friday Giving Don t forget our Friday Giving Appeal to help the needy. Please bring your donations of canned foods or non-perishables, etc. to school for collection each Friday. Thank you for your generosity!
