5th Grade NEWSLETTER February 12th-16th Coughlin ELA We learned so much doing our research projects this week. We learned about reliable sources such as using.edu,.org,.gov websites rather than.com and Youtube. We learned how to cite our sources using Google Explore. Wow, parents, we would have saved so much time in high school and college if we had this tool. No more MLA books needed. Have your child show you this. I was thrilled to learn this. Thanks, Mrs. Loflin! Students were given Greek and Latin roots Lesson 10 Monday. The new root is bio - which means life, and the new suffixes will be -ology (the study of) - ologist (person who studies) - phobia (fear) and - phobe (someone who fears). Lesson 10 will be due this Friday, February 16. The test will be given that day as well. Your child s Check In scores were sent home with report cards. Please let me know if you have any questions. If your child is scoring lower than expected, (the class averages were about 78%), please reinforce the nightly reading. Students can also study Greek and Latin roots nightly. It would also be a good idea to go back through the Greek and Latin roots notebook to refresh. Vocabulary is an area Economou s Science News: This week we will learn about limiting factors and the carrying capacity of ecosystems. We will focus on lots of vocabulary needed to understand literature written about ecosystems, such as: threatened, endangered, extinct, fauna, flora, scavengers, continental shelf and fertile. WE WILL EXPLORE THE INTERCONNECTEDNESS OF ORGANISMS IN ECOSYSTEMS. Vocabulary Words: DISTRIBUTED 1/26, TESTED: 2/23 Consumers eat other organisms for their energy. They are further grouped by the type of food they eat. Decomposers these organisms break down dead matter and return the nutrients to the soil. Worms, insects, fungi, and bacteria are all examples of these. Herbivores animals that eat plants, algae, and other producers. Cows, horses, deer, and giraffes are all examples. Carnivores animals that eat other animals. (meat eaters) Lions, wolves, coyotes, and sharks are all examples of these. Predators living things that hunt other living things for food. For example, a hawk eats a snake. The hawk is the and the snake is the prey. In a food web, the arrow also points to this. Prey this is the hunted/eaten. Jones Math Tidbits Math...will you be my valentine?? Last week: We multiplied fractions and mixed numbers. We continue to work on simplifying answers. **We needed to reschedule our break out box until Valentine s Day due to scheduling conflict. This week: Continue...NF.7 Multiplying fraction by a fraction and mixed number to find the area of a rectangle with fractional sides NF.8 Dividing a whole number by a unit fraction continues *Problem solving with fractions using all operations. HOMEWORK: I have set up an online problem solving activity for the kids to do to follow up checking our NC CheckIn books. It will be active on their Powerschool starting Monday. I will walk them through how to log in, but you can also find the directions on my webpage under Homework code. Their score will go directly to me so I can monitor progress. THIS can be counted for math log...work 15 minutes, then pause until the next day. It will be active the whole week. An optional paper sheet will also be coming home Monday for math log to practice multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.
where we need to grow. Overall, I was very pleased with our scores! We were tied for 2nd in the district! Please make sure your child has the necessary supplies each day. All students should have Lined paper Two pencils Colored pencils Scissors Glue sticks Next week we will be continuing to create I-Movies, Keynote and Google slides for our animal research projects. We will also be working on comma usage and letter writing formats. Our letters will be reviewing point of view. Don t forget to study for your Greek and Latin roots test that will be Friday, the 16th. For example, a fox eats a rabbit. The rabbit is the fox s prey in a food web, the arrow points away from this. Population all the organisms of a species living in the same area. For example, all the frogs living in the pond (by the school) make up the frog s in the pond. Commuinty all the populations living in an area. For example, all the different living things together make up the pond s. Ecology the study of how things in the ecosystem interact. Niche the role/job of an organism in its community. Food Chain the path that energy takes from producers to consumers to decomposers. Food Web shows the relationship between all the organisms in a community. It shows how populations must compete for food with the arrows going from the prey to the predator. Producers use the Sun s energy to produce their own food. Algae, grass, trees, flowers, and all other plants are examples of these. Enrichment: Superstars and deductive reasoning puzzles Don t forget, there are tutorial videos on my website under STudent Resources for each topic. We will continue to go over our NC Check In books this week in small groups. This is key to correcting and learning from our mistakes. February s at home STEAM project is to create a paper box to hold as many Hershey Kisses as possible. The boxes completed will be displayed in the media center!
