What s my plan after high school? Where do I begin with college applications/career programs? 2018 Fall Senior/Parent Presentation

Welcome Seniors! Today is an overview of the college application process and how Naviance is used at Folsom High School as part of that process. This presentation will include important information about applying to colleges/career programs, Letters of Recommendation, Transcripts, a-g Requirements, and updated FAFSA information. *This presentation is posted on Naviance and on FHS Counseling webpage

Seven Steps Step 1: Deciding Which Schools You re Applying to Step 2: Adding to colleges I am applying to list in Naviance Step 3: Determining which Application to Use Step 4: Completing and Submitting your Letter of Recommendation Packet (only if needed) Step 5: Completing and Submitting your College Applications Step 6: Requesting Transcripts Step 7: Updating the Admissions Decisions

Step 1: Decide Which Schools You re Applying to It is recommended that you apply to 6 to 8 different colleges or universities. Your final college list should consist of approximately: 3 reach schools= A reach school is one where your academic credentials fall below the school s range for the average freshman. Reach schools are long-shots, but they chould still be possible. If you have a 2.0 GPA, Harvard is not a reach school it s a dream. 3 match schools= A match school is one where your academic credentials fall well within (or even exceed) the school s range for the average freshman. There are no guarantees, but it s not unreasonable to be accepted to several of your match schools. 2 safety schools= A safety school is one where your academic credentials fall above the school s range for the average freshman. You can be reasonably certain that you will be admitted to your safety schools.

Step 1: University Profiles Reach School UCLA Match School San Diego State University Safety School CSU Bakersfield Number of completed applications received: Number of applicants offered admission: 58,931 58, 970 7,621 10, 406 (18%) 34% 5,409 (70.6%) Average SAT Score 1530 567 Math 546 Reading 490-590 Writing 1377 Average ACT Score 24 25 Range Average secondary school weighted GPA: 4.29 3.69 3.21

A student must study political science or history to be competitive for law school? -Fiction-Our very own Governor Brown majored in Classics at Berkeley, later went to Yale. Psychology, Sociology, and Communication are the most applicable, pragmatic liberal arts majors for student who don t know what to major in? -Fiction-Most sought after, however recommended to check out linguistics, cognitive science Students DO NOT need to major in Biology to go to medical school? -Fact-Consider some of UC s lesser known and less highly selective majors as an alternative Mathematical Analytics & Operations Research (UC Davis), Nutritional Science (UC Berkley), Cogitative Science (UC Merced), Global Health (UC San Diego) Deciding Majors Fact or Fiction? A student s major will determine their career path and does not allow flexibility. FICTION! A student s career path is shaped by a multitude of opportunities. Important: It is recommended to select alternative majors for competitive programs. Make sure your alternative is in a different college. Example: 1 st choice: Engineering Alternative: Network & Digital Technology

STEP 1 SuperMatch - Naviance Tools SuperMatch is a visually-based search that helps students find the right fit for college. Students select from a list of college decision factors and rank their importance. As the student makes selections, the best match colleges appear with information about why the college(s) is a good match. Students can save their searches and add colleges to the Colleges I m Thinking About list from here. SuperMatch is found under the COLLEGES tab in Naviance Additional Tools: College Match and College Compare

STEP 1 College Scattergrams- Naviance Tools Scattergrams visually shows you, your data compared to other students at the school who applied and received results from the same college. HOW TO: Colleges Tab Find Your Fit: Scattergrams Select College View Scattergram Scroll down to Scattergrm: Select what you want to compare GPA/TEST SCORES

STEP 2: Adding to colleges I am applying to list Naviance is not a college application! It is a tracking system for your college applications and provides tools for college/career research It is critical to keep this list current and accurate or your documents may not be sent on time

STEP 2: Adding to colleges I am applying to list Log Into Naviance: http://student.naviance.com/folsomhi Username/Password: Same as Powerschool Click Colleges Tab Click Colleges I am applying to Click + and type the name of the college in the box

STEP 2 Adding colleges to your Naviance Page

STEP 2 What do Early Decision, Early Action, Regular Decision and Rolling Admissions mean?! Early Decision (ED): is an accelerated process in which students complete and submit their applications in October or November. Early decision is binding. A student may apply to only one college early. If accepted, a student must withdraw all other college applications. Early Action (EA): Early action is also an accelerated college application process in which students complete and submit their applications in November. Early action is not binding - - students are free to apply to other colleges. Although students receive early notification of an acceptance, they do not need to make a decision until the usual May 1 deadline. Regular Decision: This is the most common admission process. Applications for admission are due sometime between November 30 and January l5 at most selective colleges. Rolling Admission: students have a large window of time during which they can apply to a college or university. A college with rolling admission accepts applications for as long as spaces are available.

Step 3: Determining which Application to Use California Public Schools Private and Out of State University of California (UC) California State University (CSU) Common Application The Common App is a generic undergraduate college application that applicants may use to apply to any of the 700+ member colleges Non-Common Application Some colleges and universities have opted not to accept the Common Application. These schools use their own, typically online, application. Naviance is only used to send FINAL transcript in May after graduation When a school accepts the Common App it is designated by this symbol Non-Common App schools allow documents to be submitted the following ways: Mail, Coalition Application, Electronic Application

Step 4: Completing College Applications Review A-G requirements: see requirements to the right Reporting repeated courses to colleges UC/Private: want you to report all grades CSU: only improved grade Courses completed outside of FHS (FLCC, Online-BYU): report grades and courses as listed on the original transcript Students with international high school transcripts : report grades and courses as listed on the original HS transcript Do NOT hide or falsify anythingcolleges will revoke your admission a.history/social Science 2 Years Required b. English 4 Years Required c. Mathematics 3 Years Required / 4 Years Recommended Including Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 d. Laboratory Science 2 Years Required / 3 Years Recommended Biology, Chemistry, Physics e. Language other than English 2 Years Required / 3 Years Recommended Must be the same language f. Visual & Performing Arts 1 Year Required g. College Preparatory Electives 1 Year Required From approved UC a-g course list

STEP 4 Application highlights...csu Application filing period: Oct 1-Nov 30 No essay, transcripts or letters Grades are self reported 1. Log on to csumentor.org and create an account. 2. Complete the application with a-g courses by using your grades found on your unofficial transcript- it will be provided to you in your English class 3. Do not send an official transcript unless requested by a specific CSU campus via their portal after application submission. 4. Folsom does not send test scores. To send SAT scores, use code 3594 to send to CSU.Mentor/all campuses. Send official ACT scores to one CSU then use CSU Mentor to share with other campuses. 5. Add the CSU schools to the Colleges I m applying to list in Naviance.

STEP 4 Application highlights...uc Application filing period: Nov 1-30 NEW essay prompts Grades are self reported No transcripts or letters of recommendation Must take or have taken the SAT w/writing or ACT w/ writing by December 1. On the UC Undergraduate Admissions, select Apply to UC link. 2. Choose apply online, then Go directly to the application to begin. 3. Complete the application with a-g courses by using your grades found on your unofficial transcript that will be provided to you in English 4. Submit your application by 11/30. 5. Send your test scores directly to each school via College Board and/or ACT. Sending official SAT scores to one UC will share with all UC campuses to which you apply. Make sure you use the same first and last name on all documents. 6. Add the UC schools to the Colleges I m applying to list in Naviance.

STEP 4 UC Freshman Comprehensive Review (14 areas being considered) Grade-Point Average Test Scores Courses Completed/Planned Honors (weighted) Courses Top 9% Local Context(ELC) Quality of Senior Year Academic Opportunities in California High Schools Performance in Academic Subject Areas Achievements in Special Projects Improvement in Academic Performance Special Talents, Achievements, and Awards Participation in Educational Preparation Programs Academic Accomplishment Within Life Experiences Geographic Location Colleges want to see your commitment, dedication and genuine interest in expanding your intellectual horizons.

STEP 4 UC Personal Insight Questions You will have 8 questions to choose from. You must respond to 4 of the 8 questions. Each response is limited to a maximum of 350 words. Do not go over the word limit. Do not put additional written prompts in the optional section of the application Which questions you choose to answer is entirely up to you: But you should select questions that are most relevant to your experience and that best reflect your individual circumstances. Do not use your Common Application Essay Prompt- UC s can tell! All questions are equal: All are given equal consideration in the application review process, which means there is no advantage or disadvantage to choosing certain questions over others. There is no right or wrong way to answer these questions: It s about getting to know your personality, background, interests and achievements in your own unique voice. It is best to think of this as a written interview Grammar does not matter, content is key

STEP 4 Application highlights... Common Application Essay Questions Grades will be reported by the Counselor Letters of recommendation required for most Must take or have taken the SAT w/writing or ACT w/ writing by December 1. The Common Application- www.commonapp.org 2. Create Account 3. Add Schools to your list 4. Understand your schools specific requirments 5. Step 4: Completing and Submitting your College Applications Submit your applications to your prospective colleges. Do not wait until the last minute. Follow deadlines. Read instructions

STEP 4 Make sure you indicate on Naviance that you have applied

Step 5: Requesting a Letter of Recommendation Counselor school report: Explains our school to the colleges including the way our GPA is calculated and how we rank students. Counselor written evaluation: In most cases, your counselor must also write a letter for you. This letter is called a written evaluation. Letter of recommendation: Colleges often ask for two or three recommendation letters from people who know you well. Often these are teachers. Your teachers will know you need this information because you asked them in person and handed them a copy of your Letter of Recommendation Packet. THREE WEEKS NOTICE IS REQUIRED!

Complete the Letter of Recommendation Packet. Have your parents/guardians complete Parent/Guardian Questionnaire. Make copies of the entire packet for each person who will be writing a letter/completing a form and give it to them BEFORE you enter their name/email in Common Application or other request areas. It is imperative that you complete the information on the first page of the packet regarding who the letter is for and how they will be receiving it for each school that you are applying to as well as the due dates for each school. Due Date: October 5, 2018. Step 5: Requesting a Letter of Recommendation If you have missed the October 5, 2018 deadline, at minimum you need to give your counselor at least three weeks notice that a letter is needed before the deadline. It is more efficient for counselors to complete all forms at once. The three weeks does not include holidays or vacation. Don t forget to give Thank You s to your recommenders. They do not have to do this for you- it is extra!

Step 6: Requesting a Transcript All TRANSCRIPT requests must be done through Naviance UC/CSUs do not want your transcript until you graduate! All Common App schools will automatically receive a transcript Requests for transcripts for UC/CSU and Common App Schools will be deleted (In a handful of cases a UC/CSU campus will ask for a transcript during the application process. Please let your counselor know if you get a request for a transcript.)

STEP 6 To request a transcript for a college: Add your colleges to the Colleges I m Applying to list Click on + request transcripts Click boxes next to only the campuses that need a transcript sent We require that you submit a college application prior to requesting a transcript To request a transcript other than college apps (personal use, scholarship, internship, insurance, etc): Log into Naviance Student Click College tab Scroll to Manage Trancripts in the Apply to College box Click + and Other Transcript Fill out required information. In Other notes please indicate the following: Offical or Unoffical, Student Pick up TRANSCRIPTS WILL NOT BE MAILED TO STUDENT HOMES Click Request and Finish when completed
