Calculator: Basic non-programmable and non-graphing scientific calculator. Calculator features on cell phones are NOT ALLOWED for quizzes/tests/exams. Catalog Course Description: The course covers the real numbers and their properties; evaluating and simplifying algebraic expressions; rules of positive integer exponents; fundamental operations on polynomial, rational, and radical (index 2) expressions; polynomial factoring; solving linear, quadratic, and special polynomial equations; solving rational and radical equations; graphing a linear equation in two variables; solving a system of two linear equations in two variables; setting up and solving a variety of word problems. Course Level Student Learning Outcome: Students will be able to think analytically at a level appropriate to elementary algebra and read critically to solve elementary algebra level mathematical problems. Points Possible for the Semester MML Course ID: vo20653 MyMathLab (MML) Online Homework (100%) See page 3 of syllabus for student registration instructions Classwork (60%) Worksheets done during the in class meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All classwork must be done during class time and turned in before leaving the class. No late work will be accepted. Lecture Notes (40%) While watching the presentation videos in MyMathLab, you are to copy the notes, especially the examples that are worked out in the video just like how you would write lecture notes in a regular face to face class. At times, you may have to pause the video to copy the pop up summary page. Bring the copied notes to class and you will receive 3 points for showing the complete set of lecture notes of the sections listed in the teaching schedule during each class meeting. You will refer to these notes while working on the classwork. No late work will be accepted. Four tests (100% each) Refer to Teaching Schedule for Test Dates There is no make-up for any missed test. All missed tests will receive a zero score. However, the score you receive in the final exam may be used to replace the lowest test score on an equivalent basis. Final Exam (200%) Thursday, June 2, 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. NOTE TIME CHANGE!! The final exam is an accumulation of the four tests so it is imperative that you learn from the mistakes that you made by reviewing the graded tests carefully and comparing your work with the answer keys posted. At the end of the semester, the scores from all classwork, lecture notes, four in-class tests, MML homework average will be added to the final exam score. The total will be used to determine the final grade for Math 115. THREE SITES TO FAMILIARIZE FOR THIS CLASS: 1) Etudes at https://myetudes.org/portal for class discussions, live messaging, chatrooms and online tutoring. To login to Etudes, you will need to use the first two letters of your first name, the first two letters of your last name, followed by the last five digits of your LAVC student ID number. The default 4-digit password is your month and day of birth in the school records. For example, John Smith has a student ID number 88-999-5142 and his birthdate is August 23. So his login will be josm95142 and his default password will be 0823. Click on "LAVC MAT 115 7421 SVO S16" (tab across the top) to enter into our virtual classroom. On the left navigation bar, you will now see tabs like Announcements, Chat Room, Discussion and others. CourseMap: Course Map allows you to access and complete tasks and view deadlines from a single location. However, since we do not have any assignments posted on Etudes for Math 115, you will not be using this tab as much as the others. All online homework assignments and homework grades are posted within MyMathLab. Announcements: All announcements for the class will eventually be listed here so you can review them at all times. A new announcement will be posted on the Etudes homepage and emailed to your LAVC email account. Discussion and Private Messages: The Discussion site is where all can see what you type and post, and they can respond by replying to your posting. Alternatively, you can choose to send private messages to another person listed in our class by looking through the member listing. Once you find the person, click on pm and type your message in the pop up window. Chat: When you are in the Etudes chat room, there will be a blue dot that appears next to your login name. Make it a point to stop by from time to time and chat live with each other. Online Tutoring: This link provides you access to free online tutoring. The service is provided by NetTutor, the company who was awarded the State s OEI contract for online tutoring. Once you click on the link and agree to the terms, simply choose the subject matter and choose type of support that you need. Activity Meter: Reports to the instructor the student's site visits within Etudes during their logged in sessions, frequency of visits and postings made in Etudes. 2) LAVC Email at https://student.laccd.edu/sso/ for class announcements, updates or to email me. To ensure delivery, you are advised to use the campus email server. Remember to check your LAVC email account every day for any announcements!! You can access your LAVC email account using your full LAVC student ID as the login and 4-digit (MMYY) password. 3) MyMathLab at http://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com/ to do online homework, watch lecture videos and to access the document storage site for syllabus, teaching schedule, worksheets, answer keys, test reviews and test keys. The presentation videos must be watched BEFORE coming to class and the copied notes brought to class for reference and for credit. Refer to the teaching schedule to know which sections must be watched before every class meeting. 2

To register for Spring 2016 Math 115 Hybrid #7423: 1. Go to pearsonmylabandmastering.com. 2. Under Register, click Student. 3. Confirm you have the information needed, then select OK! Register now. 4. Enter your instructor s course ID: vo20653, and Continue. 5. Sign in with an existing Pearson account or create an account: If you have used a Pearson website (for example, MyITLab, Mastering, MyMathLab, or MyPsychLab), enter your Pearson username and password. Click Sign In. If you do not have a Pearson account, select Create and complete the required fields. Write down your new Pearson username and password to help you remember them. 6. Select an option to access your instructor s online course: Use the access code that came with your textbook or that you purchased separately from the bookstore. Buy access using a credit card or PayPal. Get 14 days of temporary access. (Look for a link near the bottom of the page.) 7. Click Go To Your Course on the Confirmation page. On the My Courses page, select the course title Spring 2016 Math 115 Hybrid #7423 to start your work. To do homework: To watch lectures: To access documents: Click on Homework tab on the left menu Go to Media Library and select chapter, section, video lectures Then click "Find Now". Click on the lecture video link. Go to Course Tools and click on Document Sharing. MML homework & study guide: It is your responsibility to make time to finish all corresponding MML assessments as the topics are being taught in class before the deadline set. You have three attempts to each problem to get the correct answer but you have unlimited requests for similar exercise to each problem. So it is possible to get 100% in every MML assignment. You are advised to keep a MML journal with a hand copy of all the difficult problems, especially the ones that you need multiple attempts and requests to get them right! Alternatively, you can print out the questions and have them worked out in the space provided. These printouts or the journal will allow you to review for exams and the final, and enable you to go to the math tutoring lab in LARC226 for help. Note that you can always review the completed assignments online, although you will no longer be able to improve your score for that assignment if it is past the deadline. About the Class: Being a hybrid class, 40% of the learning time is done online, outside of the 60% in class time when we meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The sections to view are listed on the teaching schedule. The presentation videos found in MyMathLab are the online lessons outside of the class meetings that you need to watch BEFORE coming to class. This is part of the requirement of a hybrid class. Pause the lecture or repeat any part of the lecture as needed using the control buttons at the bottom of the presentation video. Most importantly, you need to learn how to solve the examples covered and understand any pop up summary of the concepts covered in each video. After watching each example, make sure to pause the lecture and work the example on paper on your own. Remember that math is not a watching subject. You need to have hands-on experience. At times, you may encounter a difficult example that you might need to watch it, pause the lecture, work the example on paper, get stuck, and then watch it again, get stuck again, and so you watch it again before you finally solve the entire problem. Especially note the examples covered in the presentation videos. At the start of the class meeting, you should ask questions regarding the material and concepts discussed in the videos. The remaining class time will be used to discuss more examples and work on the given handouts. Classwork will be assigned and all work done on these handouts. These classwork are to be turned in at the end of each class meeting. Based on the 1:2 rule, a five-unit regular class would require ten hours per week outside of class for studying and doing homework. For a hybrid five-unit class, you would need to put aside TWO MORE hours (40% of 5 hours) for viewing the lecture videos and learning how to solve the examples within the lecture. In a hybrid class, you must be comfortable with learning partially on computers, be extremely self-disciplined and motivated. You must make sure to complete all assignments before the deadline and you must find time to view the lecture videos found in MyMathLab BEFORE coming to class. Attendance: You must come to class on time, be in class throughout each meeting and participate in the discussions. For every lesson you miss, make sure to email me at vosh@lavc.edu with a reason for your absence or it will be counted as an unexcused absence. You will also have to study the sections on your own and use MML as a study guide to help you understand the material. You are always welcome to see me during my office hours if you have any questions and doubts, and visit the math tutoring lab in LARC 226 for additional assistance. Note that attendance will be taken during every meeting in the semester. In accordance with the rules and regulations of the college, students who miss the first lesson will be dropped from the class as no show. Whenever unexcused absences in hours exceed the number of hours the class meets per week, students may be excluded from the class due to insufficient attendance maintained. Withdrawal from Class: Please be advised that after the census week, it is solely the responsibility of the students to drop themselves. Failure to do so may result in a grade of F in the class. If you stop attending the class (or wish to drop the class), you must drop yourself officially, through the Office of Admissions and Records, in person or by Internet. February 21 is the last day to drop the class without receiving a W by Internet and May 8 is the last day to drop the class with a W by Internet. Plagiarism and Student Conduct: All cell phones should always be turned off or set to silent in class. You are expected to demonstrate respect and consideration towards your peers and instructor. Students who use the cell phone or students who persist in talking during the lecture may be removed from the class for that day. Plagiarism is the use of others words and/or ideas without clearly acknowledging their source. When you incorporate those words and ideas into your own work, you must give credit where credit is due. Plagiarism, intentional or unintentional, is considered academic dishonesty and is not tolerated. Anyone found to be plagiarizing or cheating on assignments (e.g., copying or giving answers, using crib sheets, etc.) will (1) receive a zero (fail) on the assignment, and (2) be referred to the Vice President of Student Services for further disciplinary action, following due process.
