ACCT 101 Fundamentals of Accounting I Financial Accounting Syllabus Spring 2019 Prof. Debra L. Johnson, CPA Course Description: This course introduces the student to basic financial accounting concepts for various types of companies. The corporate form of a business entity will be the primary focus for the semester. Financial accounting is concerned with how transactions are recorded and summarized, and how the reports are prepared for external users. The principal financial statements that we will cover during the semester are the income statement, the retained earnings statement, the balance sheet and the statement of cash flows. We will spend the first part of the course reviewing concepts covered in ACCT 100. We will also learn proper accounting techniques for cash, receivables and investments, inventories, fixed assets and intangibles, and current liabilities. In addition, this course will cover the corporate form of ownership, and common equity (stock and dividend) and debt (bond) transactions, accounting for dividends and corporate earnings, investments, unusual items that effect the income statement, as well as a myriad of other accounting issues. During the semester, we will focus on the proper presentation and disclosure in the financial statements of the above items. We will also look at some financial analysis tools and interpret financial ratios that relate to these items. Prerequisite: ACCT 100 with a grade of C or higher. Anyone who does not meet the prerequisite should see the instructor immediately. Class time Your class has a lecture and lab component to it. You are expected to be in attendance for the duration of every class for the entire period. If you choose not to participate in the lab component, you will not receive full participation points, and you may be marked absent. Also, you most likely will not perform as well on graded assignments. Accounting can be a tough subject, and you need to avail yourself to as much practice as you can get. Text: Financial and Managerial Accounting, Wild, Shaw, Chiappettta, Financial and Managerial Accounting: Information for Decisions, Seventh Edition, McGraw-Hill. Students will also need to purchase an access code for McGraw Hill Connect if buying a used text. If you purchase the new book package through Cerritos College bookstore, or from the bookstore across the street, the code will come pre-packaged in the textbook. This Connect code is required to complete all homework assignments and all quizzes online and is a REQUIRED component of the course. If you purchase the book somewhere else or you purchase a used book, please be advised that you will need to purchase the code on a stand alone basis. This same text will be used for the next sequential accounting class, ACCT 102 next semester. YOU CANNOT COMPLETE YOUR HOMEWORK AND QUIZ ASSIGNMENTS WITHOUT THE CONNECT ACCESS CODE. (Note: If you were enrolled in ACCT 101 and purchased a book/access code in a previous semester and FAILED or DROPPED the class, your access code should be good from one year out. If it expires prior to end of this semester, you MUST LET ME KNOW on the first day of class. Check this out on Connect when you first log in. If your code expires 1

prior to the end of the course, please come and see me after class ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS.) Other Supplies: You will need at least 4 Scan Tron form #882 s for the exams. Please purchase these the first week of class. You need to bring a calculator, notebook with paper, and pen or pencil to class on a daily basis. You also need to have a USB/flash drive (also known as thumb drive or travel drive) available to use on a daily basis. I would strongly encourage you to bring ear buds or headphones to the lab so that you can listed to video content without disturbing others. We will utilize the computer lab often and you cannot save your work without one. I will provide you with quite a few handouts over the course of the semester. You will need to take notes. We will work out many exercises and problems from the text. You may desire to bring a red pencil and/or highlighter pen to class to highlight errors. I strongly suggest you purchase a 3- ring binder to keep all work together in an organized fashion. Departmental Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Identify users of financial information and the information provided by financial statements. Analyze and record service business transactions into the fundamental accounting equation. (Ch 1) 2. Analyze and record service business transactions using the rules of debit and credit into a general journal and post to T accounts or a general ledger. (Ch 2) 3. Analyze and record adjusting entries, complete a worksheet and prepare an income statement, statement of retained earnings, and a balance sheet. (Ch 3) 4. Analyze and record merchandise transactions into a general journal, post to T accounts or a general ledger and prepare a multiple-step income statement. (Ch 4) 5. Compute inventory values in a perpetual system using the FIFO, LIFO, average cost and specific identification methods. (Ch 5) 6. Prepare a bank reconciliation and the resulting adjusting journal entries. (Ch 6) 7. Calculate and prepare adjusting general journal entries to record the effect of uncollectible accounts receivable using the direct write-off and allowance methods. (Ch 7) 8. Understand the cost principle for Plant Assets and compute depreciation and the resulting journal entries using the straight-line, units-of-production and declining-balance methods. (Ch 8) 9. Prepare entries to record transactions related to current liabilities including short term Notes Payable and Payroll. (Ch 9) 10. Compute and prepare resulting journal entries for the issuance of Bonds including the amortization of any premium/discount using the straight-line method (Ch 10) 11. Record the issuance of corporate stock and subsequent transactions involving cash and stock dividends and treasury stock purchases and sales. (Ch 11) 12. Prepare a statement of cash flows using the indirect method for operating activities. (Ch 12) Registering on the Publisher s Connect Site: Your textbook comes with an access code that will provide access to the Connect Platform. Graded Interactive Presentations, Homework Assignments, and Quizzes must be done on the Connect Site. Optional (ungraded) Learn Smart access is also provided to you on this site. You must register on the Connect site using the exact same name and punctuation (i.e. hyphenated names etc) as you use in the Cerritos College Registration site. Only ONE ACCOUNT per student is allowed. YOU MUST HAVE 2

YOUR CONNECT ACCESS CODE TO REGISTER on the site and to COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENTS. You must sign up on the Connect site within the first week of class. If you do not have a book within the first week, you can use the Courtesy Access to allow you two weeks of free access. You will be locked out of the site if you do not provide an access code prior to the expiration of the Courtesy Access. Failure to do sign up on the course site may result in a drop from the course. ALL assignments are due by the prescribed due dates. You must use the Connect platform to submit your assignments. Class Preparation & Interactive Presentations You are expected to read the chapter in the book BEFORE the material is discussed in class. In order to encourage you to prepare for class, you are required to open and review an Interactive Presentation prior to midnight of the day BEFORE the topic is to be discussed in class. These are short video clips that explain the relevant concepts in the chapter. If you shortcut this step, you will also short circuit the learning process. These interactive presentations are worth 3 points for each chapter and if used properly will help you comprehend the material BEFORE it is discussed in class. You may drop your one low score. Due dates are listed on the schedule of assignments. Homework: You MUST do your homework to do well in this class. ALL homework assignments must be completed using the Connect site and are due by midnight on the due dates posted on the attached schedule of assignments. There are no exceptions. Each chapter of homework is worth ten points. The site will give you instant feedback and immediate hints if you encounter difficulties with your homework. Homework assignments are similar to those exercises and problems worked in class. You will be required to complete substantially all of your homework using the Connect package. This site is an interactive, internet-based product designed to help students complete end of chapter exercises and problems. It is available 24/7 via the internet. You may access and attempt the homework questions as many times as you like prior to the due date. You will receive instant feedback as exercises and problems are attempted. I will allow everyone to drop one low homework score. The homework assigned is a minimum amount to get by in the class. A students will do more than the amount required to help prepare them for quizzes and exams. I would strongly encourage you to bookmark this site as you will refer to it often. YOU CANNOT COMPLETE YOUR HOMEWORK AND QUIZ ASSIGNMENTS WITHOUT THE CONNECT ACCESS CODE. Suggestions for Completing the Homework: You should enter the Connect site, print out the blank Connect homework, and then save the work prior to leaving Connect (as the numbers will change if you do not save.) You should then complete each assignment on the homework BY HAND on a piece of paper. Enter the solutions into Connect to check the accuracy of your answers. Keep a notebook of your homework for studying purposes. (If you simply enter the site and use the drop down boxes to complete the homework with minimal effort, YOU WILL NOT BE PREPARED for the exams.) Homework is considered to be a learning tool. Therefore, you can submit your homework as many times as you want up until the 3

due date. (I would encourage you to continue submitting answers until you receive a score of 100%.) If you encounter problems completing the homework, you can obtain instructor assistance or student tutorial assistance at one of the labs. I will drop your lowest homework. NO LATE HOMEWORK IS ACCEPTED. Quizzes: In order to help you remain current in your studies, on-line quizzes are required at the end of each chapter. They are a combination of multiple choice, true false, and minor problem solving with some fill in the blanks. These quizzes should be used to assess your progress and understanding of chapter materials. The due dates are posted on the attached schedule of assignments. Each quiz is worth 10 points and must be submitted by the due date. They are timed at 60 minutes and may be accessed ONLY ONCE per chapter. Once you access them, the timer starts running. You cannot access them again. There are no make up quizzes. You may drop your lowest quiz score. YOU CANNOT COMPLETE YOUR HOMEWORK AND QUIZ ASSIGNMENTS WITHOUT THE CONNECT ACCESS CODE. Class Lab Time: We will try and visit the computer lab toward the end of most class meetings. This lab time is a required portion of your class. It is NOT OPTIONAL. You must attend your class session for the entire duration of your class period (8:30 am 10:45 am) or you will be marked with half an absent which may lead to your dismissal from the class should your absences exceed the institution s policies. You may use the computers to complete the homework assignments and take the quizzes. You should focus on keeping current with your studies so that you can make the most of the lab time in the computer room. Your participation in the lab portion of the class is required to earn full participation points. Accounting Labs - At the time of printing, there were plans to offer Instructor led Accounting Tutorial labs. In addition, there is student led tutoring offered through the student success center. Both of these labs are offered at NO COST to you. The days and times of these labs will be posted during the first week of class. In addition, they are posted on my website. Computerized Work: As mentioned previously, ALL homework assignments must be completed electronically using the Connect Homework Website. You MUST have access to a computer to complete your homework assignments. In addition, some other computerized assignments will be assigned in class. If you do not have a computer at home, check out the availability of use in the Library and in the Student Success Center. There are also computers located in DSPS and in the Veteran s Resource Center for those eligible student populations. Writing Assignments: The business world insists that business students possess adequate writing skills. During the semester you will be required to do two assigned brief writing exercises. These assignments will be graded primarily for content. However, proper vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and spelling will be considered when points are assigned. More specific directions and due dates will be announced as the semester progresses. Group Work: During the semester, we will work on some class assignments in groups. Any work not completed during the class period will need to be completed outside of class meetings. 4

Your contribution to the group s work will be rewarded. Lack of contributions to the group will also be considered in the grading process. Examinations: ARRIVE ON TIME every day, but especially on test days. If you arrive in class late on a test day, there will be a five-point deduction from your test score. Use the restrooms prior to exams. Once you start an exam, you MAY NOT LEAVE THE ROOM. Cell phones need to be TURNED OFF and stored away during class time. If your cell phone buzzes, beeps or rings during an exam, you may be asked to leave. Exams may consist of chapter-oriented problems, true/false questions, matching, multiple-choice questions, definitions & terminology, and essay questions. No notes or study aids of any kind are allowed on exams. You must take the exam on the scheduled date. There are no make-up exams, unless there are severe/unusual documented circumstances. Grading: Students will be evaluated through a combination of exams, including a comprehensive final exam, homework assignments, quizzes, writing assignments, and group participation as follows: Points Description 400 Four Exams @ 100 points each; 33 Interactive Presentations: 12 chapters @ 3 pts each; low score dropped 110 Homework: 12 chapters @ 10 points each; low score dropped 110 Quizzes: 12 chapters @ 10 points each; low score dropped 30 Writing Assignments / Group: (PPE=10 Stock = 20) 20 Comprehensive Problem / Group 10 Participation 713 Total Points Final Course Grades will be computed according to the following percentages: Grade Percentage Points Needed A 90 100% 642-713 B 80 89% 570-641 C 70 79% 499-569 D 60 69% 428 498 F Below 428 Points Communication: I often send out e-mails. Please update your e-mail address on My Cerritos and make sure you check the box that says that e-mail is your preferred method of communication. Also, make sure you change your e-mail address within the Connect site. If you do not do this, you will miss valuable class communications. Policy Statement: Excessive absences, unsatisfactory progress, undesirable citizenship, or falsification of work may serve as a basis for a failing grade and/or dismissal from class. Work is 5

to be done ALONE and INDEPENDENTLY. Most of the assignments are individual efforts not group efforts unless explicitly stated as such. You may not share files or work. Submissions must be 100% completed by the enrolled student. I do not tolerate cheating in any manner. The college and I take academic honesty issues very seriously. I expect ethical behavior and integrity inside and outside of the classroom. Students who commit academic dishonesty will be dealt with according to the college s Academic Honesty policy found in the schedule. Classroom Interruptions: Out of respect for your instructor and fellow classmates, all cell phones, pagers, and any other communication devices must be TURNED OFF before entering the classroom. Cell phones may NOT BE USED during tests; not even the calculator function, and must be placed in backpacks or out of reach. It is not appropriate to leave the class to answer phones (except in the case of an emergency) and it is not acceptable to text during class time. Failure to follow these requests may result in suspension. Attendance: One of the most important things you can do this semester is to attend class. You are expected to attend class regularly and to arrive on time. Students who arrive late disrupt others trying to concentrate and may miss valuable information necessary for successful completion of the assignments. If you arrive late, you will be charged with ½ of a class absence. If you arrive late on a test day, there will be an automatic 5-point deduction. When the hours of absence exceed one more than twice the number of class hours per week, the student is considered to be excessively absent and is subject to exclusion from class (see the Schedule of Classes for the official attendance policy). Attendance will be taken at every class meeting and is considered to be extremely important for successful completion of the course. If you do miss class, it is your responsibility to find out the information you missed. If for some reason you stop attending class, it is your responsibility to officially withdraw. If you do not officially withdraw, you may receive an undesirable grade. The last day to withdraw is April 26, 2019. Disability Accommodations: Students with disabilities are encouraged to contact the instructor during office hours to discuss their disability related accommodations. Use of Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS) services including testing accommodations, requires prior authorization by DSPS and compliance with approved procedures. My Cerritos Accounts: Computer user accounts are issued to all students. Use your 7-digit student ID number as your user ID. (If you have a 6-digit ID number, place a zero in front of it.) Your password is your birthdate. You can go in and change your password on My Cerritos. You will need this account to log in and complete computerized assignments in the computer lab. You should also make sure you maintain a current email address in My Cerritos. I send out class emails often. If your email is not up to date, you may be missing valuable information.
