Instructor's Requirements I am requiring you, as an adult learner, to be responsible for your own grade in this class. I require that you balance your time obligations as an adult: juggling work, family and other classes in which you are enrolled. As an adult, each of us (including me) has personal circumstances outside of this room for which we are responsible. Let us all, you and I, strive to leave our personal problems outside this classroom, to bring our best attitude into this classroom and to achieve our best efforts with Microsoft applications. Although I am a compassionate person, I cannot factor your life s situations into the grading process. You will earn your grade; I will not give you a grade. You should spend 2 to 3 hours studying for every one hour that we spend in this room. This class has NOT been scaled-down for the community college. I will require as much work from you as I required from my students in the College of Technology at the University of Houston (University Park campus). USB: The student is responsible for obtaining a flash drive to store class-work and homework. You must bring that flash drive to each class meeting. Missed Classes: The student is responsible for material assigned on class days when he/she was absent. This can be done through contacting a classmate who was present or by contacting the Professor by email. Missed or late exams cannot be made up under any circumstances but with good cause and adequate notice, an early quiz may be given. Assignments: All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date due. Late submission of assignments will be assessed a penalty of 10% per class session. No exceptions are made. Late Coursework (Assignments, Quizzes and/or Exams: Any late coursework (including assignments, quizzes and/or tests) will incur a 10% deduction per class session. Makeup assignments, quizzes and/or test must be completed within one week from missed date. Makeup quizzes and test will be done in the testing center. Makeup test and quizzes will be different from the one given in class. After the first week for makeup, the grade will be 0. Internet Support: Check the department Web page for additional information about Office 2010, or to post a question about this course. Posting of Grades: Final grades will be posted in a timely manner. Incomplete Policy: Students will not be given an incomplete grade in the course without sound reason and documented evidence as described in the Student Handbook. In any case, for a student to receive an incomplete, he or she must be passing and must have completed a significant portion of the course. Page 2

TEXTBOOK You must purchase the textbook from an HCC bookstore since the book comes in a bundle with other required information. If you would like to purchase the textbook online, you may purchase it directly from the publisher at www.mypearsonstore.com (use the ISBN number located on page 1 of this syllabus as long as you are not using financial aid). In addition, you must obtain the books during the first week of course, at the latest, by January 30th or you will fall behind. There is a special access code that is supplied with our bundle that we will use right away. If purchased alone, the access code costs $80. Please note: Many students have tried to purchase books online and realized that the above two options were actually cheaper. All students are required to purchase a special publisher key code to use for online testing that is only available from within our book bundles. If you purchase your textbook elsewhere, you will still have to buy the access code for approx. $80. If you purchase your books from HCC or the publisher this access code will automatically be included in your bundle. Adequate WINDOWS 7 PC hardware and Software including a 1 GHz or faster CPU, 1GB or more of RAM, graphics card with 128 MB of memory, 4 GB of disk storage space and handle multimedia items (sound and maybe a microphone [suggested but not required this semester]). WINDOWS 7 XP SP2, Window Vista, or WINDOWS 7 7 Operating System Internet Explorer version 6 or 7 or 8 The MyITLab will NOT work with Safari or any other web browser; it only works with Internet Explorer. High speed Internet ACCESS (DSL or cable - dial up will NOT work) REAL PLAYER software (free online) Adobe Reader software (free online) MyITLab software (This is provided as part of your textbook when purchasing your books via the HCC bookstore or Publisher) WINDOWS 7 PC (not a MAC) You must have administrator rights on the computer you use in order to install the Myitlab software and the Office 2010 subscription (if you don t already have Office loaded). You must have Office 2010 Professional (NOT FREE) software. A 180 day trial version of Office 2010 (on a CD) is bundled with your textbook (this includes WORD 2010, Excel 2010, ACCESS 2010 and PowerPoint 2010) if you do not have Office 2010. Repeat: You must have Office 2010 on an accessible computer in order to complete the assignments. This means that you must have access to WORD 2010, Excel 2010, ACCESS 2010 and PowerPoint 2010. You must be self-motivated in order to complete work on time, and without constant reminders. This class moves at a fast pace and your staying ahead of schedule is the key to remaining on track. You must have access to required computer resources. Please note, if you tell me that the network or the computer wasn t working the night before your assignment was due, that is NOT a valid excuse. Assignments have ample lead time before the Official Due Dates to allow for these types of calamities. Page 3 of 9

Start your work early and submit your work early and you should not have a problem. If you do have internet or computer problems you must be willing to use other resources, such as going to the HCC open labs. YOUR ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION IS CRUCIAL: You must make satisfactory progress in this course. A student may be withdrawn (1) if s/he is absent for 12.5% of the class meetings or (2) if s/he does not turn in work assignments that total more than 12.5% of the course work. Contact the instructor if you are having a problem. If you stop participating in this course before the Last Day for Administrative/Student Withdrawals, you may withdraw yourself, or ask instructor to withdraw you. After March 29th, the withdrawal date deadline, the instructor is not able to withdraw you. If you stop participating in the course after the Last Day for Administrative/Student Withdrawals, you will receive an F. This will apply to all students. Incomplete grades are rarely given. DO YOUR OWN WORK. Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and may be punished by failure on exam, paper or project; failure in course; and or expulsion from the College. For more information refer to the "Academic Dishonesty" policy in the College Student Handbook. For this class, it is permissible to assist classmates in general discussions of computing techniques. General advice and interaction are encouraged. Each person, however, must develop his or her own solutions to the assigned projects, assignments, and tasks. In other WORDs, students may not "work together" on graded assignments. If it is found that students are sharing the same files and submitting the work as their own, students will receive 0 on the assignment and may possibly be removed from this class.
