Editor: Patty Alcorn Volume 11 Issue 28 April 5, 2019 Euless Jr. High Weekly Newsletter us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/euless-junior-high- 394588740590732/?hc_ref=NEWSFEED&fref=nf Learning about Heritage I recently started researching my family s genealogy. When my daughter saw this, she wanted to help out. It turned out to be an interesting history and geography lesson for her and for me. I knew about our Spanish heritage, but after talking to my parents and digging a little deeper online, she and I discovered that we also had ancestors from England and France. On one genealogy site, she searched for old census records that traced some relatives all the way back to the mid-1700s. Then we looked at maps to see where they lived. My daughter has decided to make a family tree for an upcoming social studies project. She needs to know where the other half of her family came from, so she s going to do genealogy research on her mom s side of the family next. 2018 Resources for Educators, a division of CCH Incorporated 2

A Stallion Traffic Jam During heavy school traffic times (7:30-8:30 and 2:30-4:00) there is no access to the school from the frontage road. Parents must enter from Himes by coming from the North behind the school. Students will be allowed to enter the nearest entrance to the drop off site during inclement weather. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our kids safe! 3

Retesting Except for 6 weeks and semester tests, students may retake any major test they failed. The student must arrange a time with the teacher. The maximum grade for a test retaken is a 70. 10 Important Minutes Homework Online The homework online is a parent s tool to know the homework assignments for their child. All teachers post homework daily. Check the teacher s websites. There are several ways to display assignments and they don t all use the same method. The very best academically productive time parents can spend is ten minutes per night checking the completion of homework. This procedure should start with checking Homework Online to find homework assignments. When the assignment is completed, parents should check the work for completeness before the students place the homework in their binder. Warning: >Do not accept the excuse, I left it in my locker. Incomplete work or zeros will be the result. >Do not accept, The teacher took it up. We never take up homework early. >Do not accept, I left my books at school. There is a set of textbooks on reserve at the Euless Public Library. If students complete and turn in all homework, success is the result. Zeros and/or incomplete work lead to failing grades and behavior difficulties. 4

Important Notice For student safety, please continue to follow the proper traffic pattern during all types of weather. The bus lane is for busses only and Students can enter the Southwest side doors during inclement weather. Upcoming Events It s testing season in schools right now. Please be sure your students get plenty of rest and a good breakfast to fuel their day. See our Testing Schedule at the right to know when your student will need the extra rest and breakfast fuel to make it through these days. Students, Good Luck on all of your tests! Counselors Commentaries HEB s Promotion/ Retention Policy Parents of 7th and 8th grade students, please be aware of the district promotion/ retention policy. All 7th and 8th grade students will be required to pass English, Math, Science and Social Studies to be promoted to the next grade. Failure to pass STAAR may result in retention in grades 7 and 8. 9th graders must earn 5 credits before advancing to 10th grade. TRiO is a program for College preparation, and it is available to EJH students. This program helps students navigate the university experience while attending Jr. High and High School. They cover everything from how to select the right university for your educational needs through college success. Students and parents learn to navigate the financial aid process as well as the college application process. Students are also given the opportunity to visit local universities and speak with university staff and students about college success. This is a valuable opportunity, pick up an application from your student s counselor. Editor s note: TRiO helped my son prepare for college when he was in Jr. High and High School. They also gave me valuable information that allowed my daughter, at 30, and myself, to go back to College and earn our Bachelor's degrees. It is worth it! 8

Camp Connect The kids always love going to the Buinger Academy to see what types of specialty classes they can take in high school. If you have questions, contact the EJH Counselors for more information. Thanks to N. Eljack for supplying a better copy of this poster for the Stampede Newsletter. 9
