Department of Physical Therapy Student Learning Outcomes By the conclusion of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, graduates will: demonstrate safety and competence with current clinical skills; demonstrate clinical reasoning that utilizes both the best available scientific evidence and the patient s perspective; demonstrate cultural competence; demonstrate attributes consistent with effective leadership and advocacy; demonstrate accurate self-reflection; demonstrate characteristics consistent with long-long learning. engage in scholarly pursuits; hold leadership positions in the program, School and University, as well as local, national and international professional organizations; participate in ongoing assessment activities; engage in service; demonstrate cultural competence; and, participate in alumni activities.

Introduction to the Department of Physical Therapy Assessment Process The faculty of the Department of Physical Therapy approved the current program assessment plan in 2005. The plan calls for assessment of program outcomes and goals annually, using several data sources. The Assessment Committee of the Department of Physical Therapy is charged with collecting data that will assist the Department s faculty in determining whether program outcomes and 5 Year Department Goals are satisfied. The data is discussed each Spring at the Department Retreat, and action items are collectively determined by the faculty based on the data presented. Assessment Data Collection Calendar 1 st week in September (of previous year): End of Program Survey sent out by Departmental Administrative Assistant 2 nd week in September (of previous year): End of Program Survey due (turned in to Assessment Committee) Fall to Winter Term Break 1 st week in March: 1) 1.5 year and 5.5 year (or Annual?) Program Goal #1: The program will produce high-caliber, practice-ready graduates. This program goal is supported by six student learning outcomes and reflects the program s mission to prepare life-long learners who are skilled, reflective, autonomous practitioners. In addition, this goal reflects the program s commitment to provide leadership within the profession advocating for optimal health, wellness, and performance for all members of society. By achieving these expected program outcomes, our program will reach its goal of producing high-caliber, practice-ready graduates who will be providing optimal patient care as doctoring professionals. Program Outcome 1a. Students will demonstrate safety and competence with current clinical skills. (Essential Skill) Safety. Program Goal #4: The program will demonstrate excellence in andragogy and practice. Program Goal #6: The program will foster diversity and cultural competence. This program goal is supported by program outcomes involving the provision of a curriculum supporting the development of culturally competent clinicians including opportunities for clinical education in diverse settings locally and nationally as well as internationally.
