Nethra Vidyalaya Site Visit Report Venue Nethra Vidyalaya, Address 13-239, Bhimli Beach Rd, Chapaluppada Post, Mangamaripeta Village, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh 530045, India Visit date: March 10 th, 2018 By: Vandana Mallempati Report date: March 27 th, 2018 Phone: 512-963-2191 Email: vmallemp@gmail.com

Executive Summary Nethra Vidyalaya (Under the aegis of Jeeyar Educational Trust) was established in 2001 with 18 students in Vizianagaram. Eventually they moved to Visakhapatnam in 2013. The main objective of the school is to provide free and quality education for the visually impaired students who are mainly from rural and tribal areas in and around Visakhapatnam. Most of these children come from households where the parents are either daily laborers or fishermen with literacy rates below 30%. The instructors in the school focus on the overall development of the students to make them independent and successful in life with all the essential social and employment skills. The School The school is located about 20 kms from Viskahapatnam city center. This is a co-ed school and currently 115 students are enrolled in the school in grades 1 through 10. The ground floor of the building has all the classes, the computer lab, a staff room for the teachers, a small library with braille books. The first floor of the building has separate dorm rooms for the boys and the girls, a dining room, a kitchen and an open space overlooking the ocean. The area in and surrounding the school is extremely clean and very well maintained. Please see the videos in the folder to see the classrooms, surrounding areas of the school, teachers and student interactions, their computer lab, staff room, dorm rooms, kitchen and dining area. A typical school day is from 9.15 a.m 4.15 p.m. The children go to school 6 days of the week. The school follows State Board Syllabus. The students write their board exams with the help of scribes. So far the % of students who have passed the board exams is 100%. Classrooms

There are 12 students who commute, 3 are near the school, 3 students come by school bus which also is used to transport 6 teachers and non-teaching staff who commute from Vizianagaram, and the remaining by auto. The school does not specifically provide transportation for the students but only for the teachers. The average distance a child commutes is about 20km. The students are extremely well behaved and disciplined. The day of site visit was a holiday for them but they were preparing for their board exams along with their teachers. The students are very talented in music, academics and sports having won multiple awards in all categories both at the state and at the national levels. Since most of the students live on premises, they are provided with free food, primary health care and clothing. In the past 5 years, 64 students graduated and of them 6 were employed right after grade 10 while others are pursuing their higher education. Some of them have gotten jobs after their higher education.

Please see below a wall of awards showcasing their achievements: The students are very competitive and help each other in all aspects. The Teachers The teachers working here are trained in teaching visually challenged kids. Currently the following are the teachers who work in the school: The teachers I have met seem to be very dedicated and motivated to teach these kids. They encourage the kids to participate in various levels of sports and academic events and do accompany them for competitions in the state of Andhra Pradesh and around the country. The Living Conditions The boys and the girls live in different dorms. Please see the pics below for kitchen, dorm rooms and dining areas: Kitchen

Other Funders and Supporters Most of the funds for this school is from individual donations. They did ask for government funding but were declined funding and never got the reason for that. For months when the donations are not enough they withdraw money from the trust fund. They do get donations from individual organizations for Braille books, computer software and hardware.
