School Uniform Policy Rationale The wearing of a distinctive and functional uniform contributes to a pupil s sense of belonging to a school. The partnership between home and school can be enhanced by a clear policy on uniform which ensures that all parents can send their children to school in appropriate clothing. Aims: 1. To provide guidance on safe and appropriate clothing for all areas of the curriculum. 2. For pupils to develop personal skills of presentation and organisation. 3. To reduce potential conflict about the suitability of clothing thus enabling pupils, teachers and parents to focus on the curriculum. 4. To reduce peer pressure. 5. To contribute positively towards public perceptions of the school. Every child admitted to the school has been granted their place on the clear understanding that their parents or carers accept and apply all of our policies. This policy explains our rules and guidelines on pupil s appearance and uniform. We are conscious of the financial pressures on families and our uniform requirements are intended to be sensitive to these. We appreciate the support that parents offer to ensure that our policy guidelines are adhered to. Our uniform is compulsory and must be worn correctly by all pupils at all times whether in or out of school. Pupils are ambassadors of Bowland High and are expected to dress and behave in a way that reflects the standards that we achieve academically. Guidelines on uniform, hair and make-up have been developed following consultation with pupils, parents/carers and staff. Guidelines: All staff and pupils should have a copy of the uniform requirements. Form Tutors should implement high uniform expectations every day. All staff should monitor uniform throughout the day. Clear and consistent expectations from all staff members are the best way to ensure high standards of uniform. Persistent offenders should be discussed with the Form Tutor and the Pastoral Leader. Uniform Uniforms must be smart and clean at all times and be clearly identified with the pupils name. Ties, when worn, must be full length with a manageable knot tied at the neck. Year 7 and Year 8 should wear clip-on ties and Year 9-11 should wear standard ties. Jewellery
Pupils may wear one pair of plain gold/silver stud or sleepers (not hoops) in the ear lobes only. No other body piercing is allowed. Pupils coming into school wearing incorrect jewellery will be asked to remove it. The only other item of jewellery that can be worn is a wristwatch. Hair We expect hairstyles to be suitable for the school environment. Dyed hair can only be black, brown, blonde or red (this should be a natural red colour). No other dyed colour is acceptable. Shaved styles Tramlines and shaved head designs are not acceptable. Hair should be no shorter than a grade 1 on the back and side and should be tapered in. A grade 1 cut all over the head is NOT allowed. Hair accessories should be simple and be black, blue or green. Long hair must be neatly tied back for P.E, all D.T subjects and science. Make-up No make-up or nail varnish of any kind is acceptable. Nails should be kept short and false nails (i.e. acrylic or gel) are banned for safety reasons. If pupils are unable to wear the uniform at any time parents/carers must notify school in writing. On non-uniform days pupils must still dress in a manner that the school considers appropriate. Makeup, exposed midriffs, cropped or low cut tops, short skirts and items with a potentially offensive wording and logos are not permitted. Sanctions For sanctions regarding incorrect uniform, make-up and hairstyles please refer to the Behaviour and Sanctions Policy. BOWLAND HIGH UNIFORM Notes
