KU Dean of Engineering Position Description The University of Kansas is seeking candidates for the position of Dean of the School of Engineering. The successful candidate will bring visionary leadership that guides faculty, students and staff into the school s next phase of extraordinary achievement. The University of Kansas seeks outstanding individuals for the position of the Dean of the School of Engineering. The dean serves as chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Engineering and is responsible for providing imaginative, effective, dynamic, and transformational leadership to ensure the school s long-term success. the school that also includes record high numbers of women and under-represented minority students. School of Engineering undergraduate students arrive at KU with the highest average ACT and math ACT scores of any school in the state. Since 2012 the school has seen a 29% increase in bachelor s degrees awarded and 15% increase in graduate degrees awarded. The school has the highest percentage of women engineering students and the highest percentage of women earning degrees of any program in Kansas. During the past six years, the School of Engineering has secured a 28% net increase of tenure and tenure-track faculty positions. Transformative Growth It is a time of remarkable transformation for the KU School of Engineering. Since 2012, the school has dramatically expanded its facilities adding five new buildings and 325,000 square feet of world-class research labs, stateof-the-art classrooms and enhanced collaboration spaces. Enrollment has grown to 638 graduate students and 2,445 undergraduate students a historical high number of undergraduates for School of Engineering Profile The School of Engineering comprises five departments and three additional academic programs. The school offers 12 undergraduate degree programs, 19 master s degree programs,

11 doctoral degree programs and a number of graduate and undergraduate certificates. The school employs 126 tenured and tenure-track faculty members many of whom have achieved the honor of Fellow in their respective professional associations and has annual research expenditures of $15 million. Key areas of research expertise deliver strong economic impact for the state and region: Bioengineering, Catalysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Cybersecurity / Defense, Radar and Remote Sensing, RF Engineering, Structures, Unconventional Oil Recovery, Unmanned Aerial Systems, and Water Quality. The School of Engineering is located on the main KU campus in Lawrence, a thriving community of 100,000 about 35 miles west of Kansas City and 25 miles east of Topeka, the state capital. The school also offers educational opportunities on the Edwards Campus in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park, where more than 250 students are pursuing undergraduate and advanced degrees, often as working professionals. About the University Founded in 1865, KU is a major public research and teaching institution of 28,447 students and 2,600 faculty on five campuses (Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park, Wichita, and Salina), KU is a center for learning, scholarship, and creative endeavor. Job Duties/Responsibilities The dean serves as chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Engineering and is responsible for providing imaginative, effective, dynamic, and transformational leadership to ensure the school s long term success. The dean s responsibilities include the following: Providing visionary leadership in encouraging and rewarding faculty excellence in research, teaching, and engagement; Fostering academic excellence in established courses and programs as well as in emerging programs focused on KU s strategic initiatives; Enhancing visibility, status and reputation of the School of Engineering locally, nationally, and internationally, assuring sustained funding for groundbreaking research; Maintaining accreditation, ensuring all requirements are being met by each department and program within the School; Exploring innovative approaches to enhance the educational experience of students; Creating and maintaining a learning community in which the School s students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become successful in professional life and a multicultural world; Providing leadership and collaborating with others to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within the School; Enthusiastically soliciting and securing financial support for the School, from both public and private sources, in partnership with the KU Endowment Association; Energizing alumni and others in the wider KU community to continue providing support both financial and otherwise to build the excellence of the School; Ensuring that the School maintains and benefits from close contact with industry and the professional

community and that those entities benefit from their involvement with the School; Facilitating the recruitment, development, and retention of an outstanding and diverse faculty and student body in which women and minorities are well represented; Recruiting, organizing, and directing a talented and effective staff that can assist the dean in the accomplishment of these responsibilities. Formulating and managing efficiently and fairly the budget of the School in order to shepherd and allocate its resources in accordance with the best interests of the School and the University; Building synergistic relationships with other schools and research centers that enhance the excellence of education and research within the School and the larger university community; In view of this broad array of responsibilities, the dean must be a visionary leader who has demonstrated the organizational and administrative skills and competencies necessary to manage a sophisticated academic organization, as well as the interpersonal and management skills to engage successfully with a wide range of constituencies with the ultimate goal of inspiring excellence in the KU School of Engineering. Required Qualifications 1. A doctorate in engineering or a closelyrelated field and significant leadership experience; 2. Experience and accomplishments warranting appointment as a tenured full professor; 3. Prior administrative experience or a demonstrated capacity for leadership. Preferred Qualifications 1. A record demonstrating collaborative and visionary leadership; 2. Extensive experience in organization and direction of an effective administrative staff; 3. Evidence of exceptional skill in securing and allocating resources in order to provide quality undergraduate and graduate education and research; 4. Evidence of knowledge of national and international trends in teaching and research leading to a vision of opportunity, and a well-articulated plan for how such opportunity will be harnessed to increase our reputation, attract and retain domestic and international students and prepare them for academic success and jobs, and continue to improve our research excellence; 5. Evidence of success in establishing a shared vision of research and teaching that is consistent with institutional goals and broader objectives outlined by the National Academy of Engineering; 6. Evidence of success in strategic use of resources to accomplish institutional goals and objectives; 7. Exceptional communication and teambuilding skills to facilitate effective and collegial relationships within the school and university, and to promote public awareness of the mission and accomplishments of the school; 8. Evidence of success in developing methods to recognize and support excellence in teaching and research, fostering a climate in which excellence in faculty research and quality teaching are expected, encouraged, and rewarded; 9. Evidence of commitment to the value of diversity as demonstrated by a record of building successful programs to recruit, develop, and retain an outstanding and diverse faculty, staff and student body; 10. Evidence of success in developing methods to recognize and support

excellence in service, fostering a climate in which engagement of faculty in professional societies, editorial boards and similar activities of national leadership are expected, encouraged, and rewarded; 11. Evidence of commitment to the development and support of interdisciplinary and international activities and programs; 12. Evidence of the ability to cultivate and foster ties to the engineering community. 13. Experience and achievements on external, e.g. alumni/industry and fundraising and internal relations, e.g. faculty hiring and development; students and curriculum; 14. Evidence of personal scholarly reputation and stature; i.e. publications, citations, awards/honors/recognition; 15. Evidence of successful leadership in program accreditation and accreditation activities.
