DUFFERIN PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD Catholic School Improvement Learning Cycle 2018 2019 St. Daniel Comboni Catholic Elementary School MISSION STATEMENT The mission of St. Daniel Comboni Catholic Elementary School is to build a community of faith modeling excellence and leading through innovation, through love and lifelong learning. As a community we will inspire students to lead and excel academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. MOTTO A place of mercy freely given, where everyone can feel welcomed, loved, forgiven and encouraged to live the good life of the Gospel. Pope Francis CATHOLIC FOCUS St. Daniel Comboni is located at the North West border of Brampton. We reside within Guardian Angels Parish catchment area and are blessed to be in a new and growing diverse school community. We currently have approximately 446 students and as a school in a new development, we continue to welcome new students and families to our school community each month. In support of the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board's Catholic Board Improvement Learning Cycle, St. Daniel Comboni Catholic Elementary School is further committed to: Deepening the understanding, appreciation and practice of the Catholic Christian lifestyle, with Jesus as role model; Aligning a school-wide approach to Catholicity, whereby all educational practices are implemented through a Catholic lens; Developing students who are fully alive in Christ, not only in terms of knowledge and skills, but in terms of values, attitudes and actions. St. Daniel Comboni Catholic Elementary school community models, celebrates and nourishes gospel values in the teaching and learning of our Christ-centered programs and services by: * Following the school Mission Statement * Integrating and expressing the Virtues program Virtue in Actions with Youth Faith Ambassadors * School Liturgies / community involvement / daily prayer * Masses /build strength with church, community and school / fostering home-school-parish relationships * Morning Prayers / announcements * Prayer tables and sacred spaces in classrooms * Intentionally and systematically teach strength-based strategies that build resilience. St. Daniel Comboni staff is committed to student learning and achievement by continuing to use class profiles to support teachers understanding of their learners as well as implementing culturally responsive pedagogy within a safe, caring, inclusive and responsive environment. We will also focus on building computational fluency in math through teaching practices such as Number Strings. *Continue to develop class profiles to ensure teachers are providing a learning environment that is responsive to their learners needs. * Use gradual release of responsibility, differentiated instruction and assessment to inform next steps in support of student achievement and well-being * Support computational fluency in Mathematics through the use of Math Strings and math resources such as Fosnot kits * Look at our first year s EQAO scores and identify areas of strength and needs * Designate school Equity Leads to support equity-embedded pedagogy and initiatives * Continue to recognize and acknowledge Indigenous Peoples and different ways of knowing through curriculum and teaching * Continue to find multiple ways in which students can see themselves in the curriculm through books, learning activities and differentiated instruction * Increase student-voice and engagement through student groups such as Youth Faith Ambassadors * Ensure support services are visible in the school such as SW and CYW and are available to support students in need * Intentional and systematically teach strategies that build resilience through the Chill Zone (student well-being space) and other planned initiatives in the school (e.g. prayer and meditation) * Our school has a number of activities/clubs and teams available for students to be a part of and feel a sense of belonging. * Engage whole students in school wide activites to foster sense of belonging (e.g. liturgies, Math Mission Possible, Mark Your Mark art activity) CATHOLIC COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT How does the school demonstrate that it values the involvement of community through partnerships and collaboration? St. Daniel Comboni Catholic Elementary School Council reflect the diverse Catholic community: * By communicating to the school community the importance of the partnership of schools, parents/guardians, and Church and to create a positive learning community for all stakeholders * Engaging students and families in a wide range of school-wide initiatives (e.g. Math Mission Possible, Family Advent Night, Pro PEACE assemblies) * Encourage guest speakers to address the needs of the student and parent community (e.g. Bullying Awareness Week, Black History Month, cyberbullying, Math night) * Communication via website, newsletters and Twitter * Encourage participation in Catholic School Council during Open House * Displays of students talents and strengths through the school (e.g. class photos in from display, student work in hallways)

* Following the established By-laws to detail election procedures and appointment procedures for the various positions within the Catholic School Council * School-wide presentations for students such as ProPeace assemblies to encourage positive school engagement St. Daniel Comboni school team builds and sustains community partnerships by promoting Healthy Safe Schools through the following: * Presentations from community partners such as our Peel Health Nurse * Invite Student Resource Officers in when needed and to promote and foster their relationship with school community * No Child Without Medical Alert, See - Hear Program * OPHEA Healthy Schools Certified School and continue partnership with Peel Health Nurse * Invite coop students into school from high school * PLASP * Providing options for parents to access alternative programming for students to support their needs * Promoting English as a Second Language Assessment Centre * School based presentations from Parks and Recreation, Peel Health / Smart Start * School Trips in the community * St. Daniel Comboni hosts a day care centre for toddlers and pre-school age children, available to our community * Virtues in Action - Youth Faith Ambassadors partner with Knight s Table and Dr. Simone to support needs of the community * Encouraging students to be stewards of the Earth and continue to be an Eco School working towards Gold certification * Catholic Education Week events/activities * Journey into Learning (Welcome to Kindergarten Night) * Brampton Public Library partnership * Recess Guardians - supporting younger students outside at recess PARISH HOME SCHOOL RELATIONSHIPS Describe how the school demonstrates strong partnerships and collaboration among Parish, Home and School that are based on mutual respect rooted in our lived Catholic Faith. St. Daniel Comboni School promotes the engagement and active participation of the parish and home as a fundamental component of student success activities that support this goal include: * Attend parish meeting to plan for the year * Support sacramental preparation for grade 2 and 7 students * Parish update on website / link * Keep copies of the parish bulletin in the school * Regular classroom visits from Parish Priest * Support Parish activities: (food drive, Christmas baskets, ShareLife) * Celebration of Mass with Parish Priest * Youth Faith/Adult Faith Ambassadors STEWARDSHIP OF THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT Describe how the school is committed to healthy and safe learning and working environments that enhance well-being, engagement and achievement. St. Daniel Comboni School is committed to a healthy and safe learning environment that enhance wellbeing, engagement and achievement, we support this by: * Support Health and Safety initiatives including regular inspections

* Engaging in training and development, for example, First Aid training, Defibrillator training, Stryker Chair training, Workplace Violence and Harassment training, accessibility training, WHIMIS training, emergency response training and training to support students with Asthma and Anaphylactic allergies, CPI Training St. Daniel Comboni School demonstrates financial responsibility by: * Using Cash Net and IREN software systems to monitor spending * Reduce the number of photocopies * Set aside funds for unforeseen costs * Move towards 100% use of School Cash Online * Newsletters online TECHNOLOGY How is the school committed to a responsible approach in addressing the technology needs of our learners in a global context? St. Daniel Comboni School has created a School Technology Plan which include goals to: * Ensure all students have access to varying technologies (ipads, Chromebooks) * Creation of learning spaces that integrate technology into the learning environment (e.g. Google Classroom) * Ensure Pod discussions support effective integration of new technologies and that these technologies are used effectively to support inquiry within the classroom * Foster professional learning through in-school PLCs and encourage networking across family PLCs (eg. Microsoft 365, Google Classroom) * Promote paperless (less paper usage)/digital environment * Continue to support teachers in using Google Classroom and encorporating technology into their teacher repetoire * Communicate effectively through Catholic School Council, Newsletter, electronic communications and Twitter * Implement BYOD policies and procedures for full school implementation * Stress safe use of digital technology (Digital Citizenship) * Communicate how technology supports inquiry and 21st century pedagogy * Edwin computer rollout for grade 7 students * SEAs- providing technology for diverse learners * Use of online platforms that students can access from home (e.g. LiteracyPro, Math Prodigy, Google Classroom) SACREDNESS OF OUR ENVIRONMENT How does the school encourage the respectful and sustainable environmental practices of reducing, reusing and recycling? St. Daniel Comboni School encourages the respectful and sustainable environmental practices of reducing, reusing and recycling: * Continue working with the ECO team to support ECO friendly efforts in the school * Continue working to maintain our Silver ECO school certification (and move towards Gold certification) * Recognition of the Mississauga of the Credit as stewards of the land on which our school resides, at each meeting and over the announcements * Ensure students are recycling appropriately (e.g. use of blue bin, GOOS bin, etc.) * Earth Day/Week Activities to support school communities eco-awareness * Reduce the use of disposable utensils * Established a plan to reduce the number of photocopies * Morning announcements and reminders related to conserving energy * Promote healthy litterless lunches
