EVALUATION FORM Rotary Club of Maple Grove Ethics Workshop ~ October 30, 2013 1. What was your overall impression of today s workshop? Very Useful - 44 Students/1 Rotarian Somewhat Useful - 5 Students Not Very Useful - 2 Not Useful At All - 0 - For some reason words didn t resonate to me - Deeper look into ethics-very useful for future career & choices - There was a lot of great ethical reasons to look upon & take it in - The first part can be more interactive so we can remember more - -Condense duration if possible, especially during Pogo presentations - It was fun doing the simulation - It made me really think about my future - It was very well put together - I have never experience anything like this. I thought it was extremely helpful & interesting & I would love to do something like this again to prepare me for the future. - The information was very helpful for making decisions now & in the future - It was an awesome experience being put in the shoes of actual business people dealing with such a controversial conundrum - I learned a lot (x2) & will carry on what I have learned into my future - Very interesting & thought-provoking - The information provided was very interesting & I will definitely use the things I learned today in my life - Some segments were a little long & caused some people to lose interest, try to be a little more brief in the beginning - I needed to evaluate what I want in life first before jumping into goal setting/decision making - Life-changing! - It motivated me to be a leader - I have obtained a lot of new knowledge - Knowledgeable speakers, well structured day - I value the lessons that were taught & I think it s great that they were addressed because they aren t addressed anywhere else 2. How did you feel about the accommodations i.e. food, table arrangements, facility, duration etc.? Excellent - 42 Students/1 Rotarian Above Average - 13 Students Fair - 0 Poor - 0 -Bit lengthy -Building was really neat -I thought breakfast could have been better & more nutritious -Everything was perfect & easy to access -The food box was really good. I liked all the ingredients for the sandwich -The lunch was very good & we got a good amount of breaks
-It made me feel really sophisticated because it was in such a business-like setting. And the food was great. It was long, but worth it. -The lunch boxes were cute & you got to know your table well -Extremely excellent -The cookie was awesome -Beautiful, functional building & good food -Very nice -Lot of sitting & listening -Food was decent that would be my only complaint 3. How did you feel about your opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the discussion at your table? Excellent Opportunities 36 Students Good Opportunities 13 Students/1 Rotarian Fair Opportunities 1 Student Poor Opportunities 0 -As Rotarian participator, my opportunities were limited to answering questions students asked me -Our table was really open to hearing each other s opinions -We all discussed & shared our point of views -Talked over occasionally -The simulation & speakers made it easy for me to be a part of this -I definitely got many opportunities. There was a lot of talk about college & I am a sophomore, so I didn t really contribute -Everyone was able to equally contribute their thoughts & ideas -The time we has was very limited but we were able to accomplish our goals -Junior Rotarian offered ok leadership, but the Rotarian himself was extremely helpful -Made me realize how much I like marketing -The discussion was helpful & we all got our say in -My table voiced each of our own opinions & worked off of what the other was saying -Great table! -Speak as much as you like -Only thing I would want would be longer discussion time -Students present were knowledgeable & presented substantial information -People talked over each other a little. 4. Did you have the opportunity to do the pre-reading prior to today s workshop? Yes 39 Students No 12 Students/1 Rotarian -I found it helpful to understand how this workshop will work -I got a sheet beforehand -Coming into the simulation with some knowledge about Pogo was helpful -I m not sure of it -I wish I had, but it entirely slipped my mind 5. (x2) -It was a really great thing to take & think about -This is best perspective of goal sickness -Story that you don t want to fall into, you will think about it when making a decision -Hard to relate back to my life -It helped me understand good ethics but not completely -It shows how easily people can get so infaxiated toward their goals & don t stay in tune with their conscience -It showed how unhealthy fixations lead to rationalization that can go against important values -It made me really think about other ethical decisions I would need to make in the future -I thought the simulation was more helpful but the Sadhu was interesting too -Gave a perfect example of priorities & ethical values -Extremely memorable, stick to my memory greatly -To me it was a no-brainer to save him -Makes you think in a deeper way/level -One of my favorite parts of the day -It s very revealing about the character of myself & others. 6. How valuable was the Simulation for you? Extremely Valuable 44 Students/ 1 Rotarian Somewhat Valuable 5 Students Not Very Valuable 1 Student Not Valuable at All 1 Student -That was a fantastic experience to see what goes into such decisions, the intense thought deserves a 5 rating -I realized that I like these types of situations & I learned to work well with others in this setting -Very complex problem -Gave us practice of hardships with real life situations & how to work effectively as a team -Lack of numbers/details made it less real -Made me realize how much I enjoy working out problems -Very fun(x3) -I learned a lot just went a little long -It showed me how nerve-wracking & difficult it is to be a CEO -The simulation allowed me to into practice some of the strategies we had learned. It gave me a feel for what businesses have to deal with -I thought it was helpful & show a good representation for the future -Stressful -It made me work with the group & force me to think ethically -I loved it -Interesting (x2), opened doors -It was very long & in my mind too unrealistic to take seriously 7. How valuable was the Lincoln Hall video for you? Extremely Valuable 40 Students/1Rotarian Somewhat Valuable 9 Students
Not Very Valuable 1 Student Not Valuable At All 0 -The golden rule -We could see some people make good decisions -Inspiring -It showed us that we must be aware of beware AND beholds while completing goals -It shows his ethical values -It reinforced what we learned about teleopathy -I believe it showed that people can do ethical decisions so it shows I can do it too. -Good contrast with the Sadhu -Somewhat applicable to my life -The interview itself was poor, but the concept was nice & to hear the story was restoring in humanity -Good in people -Very interesting -Very heartwarming -Seeing it in person puts a warm feeling in your heart -Shows benefits of positive ethics! 8. Which session was the most beneficial for you? Why? Simulation: x 31 Many useful things Even though it was challenging I learned a lot & had fun I want to be in marketing I was allowed to see how things in real life worked and how crisis were managed It helped me with info on marketing It allowed me to take what I learned and get an idea of how difficult business is Helped us learn from our own experiences I loved the session where we got to simulate a real business, because we got to experience what it s like to try to make a business thrive without sacrificing the integrity of the company and endangering employers Real world scenario x3; experience for life; college course experience Gave me an insight on businesses x2, since I want to go into business in the future It was very hands on x2 Has you take what you learn and put it to use/allowed us to apply what we know Very interactive & hands-on; really got us thinking about real world situations Saw my hopes for our student leaders (Rotarian comment) Helps you to understand what it means to act ethically Made me feel like I was in a real company employ Gave me look and experience on how to react x2 and decide when in crisis A lot of fun and you could collaborate with others and discuss its consequences Challenged us to use ethics and also work as a team Enjoyed using my problem solving skills Allowed for the use of skills and using skills makes a person more likely to remember them and use them more often than just being told the skills It showed me how difficult it is to have such a high authority role but I will value it in the future Most beneficial to me because it allowed me to practice using some of the tools and ideas we were taught in the morning. It also helped me to understand some of the ways a company can deal with ethical issues.

It s horrible. Accurately depicted what ethical decisions can do Other Comments: Enjoyed the part when we circled up & talked about behold and beware, many people opened up x6; very applicable to my life; knowing we all go through the same thing; discussed our personal ethic problems; Rotary 4-way test because there were the questions that was a great thing to think about Short scenarios (Benjamin) were best because we could see how different details change your opinion Getting off course, a lot of new info & ideas Four tools were great because it can be applied to all types of decision making The baby session was cool x3;i remember that one well; where human are initially good & how we become off path Session 2 & 3 x2because it was most relevant to my life; really got everyone engaged & related directly to our lives The first session because that s mostly where you learned your lessons Both videos at a related topic w/different outcomes 9. What is the main message you ll take away from the workshop? That we should always consider all of the various aspects of ethics when making a decision The Rotary Four-way test x2 Why you do the things you do? To walk the talk with ethical decisions You can take ethics into anything you pursue i.e. Climbing a mountain to business The golden rule x2 and Four-way Test Reflect on the reasons behind your decisions We are leaders and we need to lead in our life We are all moral people express it Be in the moment, ask myself if this decision follows the 4-way test, help others to have integrity & good ethics Teleopathy, four tools, & would you tell your grandma To think about and put others before yourself is a greater gift than doing what is best for you Making the right decision always benefits you A lot of information I can take with me for my future career Go out of your way to help others I will take away the four point test Inherit ethics You should be ethical in all situations in life. Doing the right thing will get you ahead. Doing the right thing will keep you on the right path. Ethics is not only key in business but also defines who you are as an individual When you make a decision be there. Be in the moment. Also think about your decisions. Think how that will impact your future. As a leader, I have to make decisions based on ethical choices that will make a difference and benefit others. Use the four-way test and always think what would my grandma think of this? To always consider ethic, how to problem solve & be fair to everyone
People go against their moral values when they become fixated, they rationalize their actions and they detach from their morals. We have to determine what the truth is, if actions are fair and beneficial to all concerned, and if it will better relationships to stick to our morals. You need to be truthful with everything you do and be ethical for all the decisions you make for the betterment of yourself and others. To be ethical because it is valued To make ethical decisions in your life as best you can Have integrity and live to your values I took out the golden rule because it applies to any and every situation There are many ways to handle a situation, but the one the benefits everyone involved is the one you will be the happiest with Pay close attention to what going on and the decision you make Think about decision and ethics more The real meaning of ethics and how important everything is Ethics is very important to everyday life, it can really change experiences Don t develop goal blindness Navigating ethical dilemmas (Golden Rule, conscious, morals point of view, Rotary 4-way test) You make ethical decisions everyday that could change your life or maybe someone else s Discover and follow my goals while being ethical Your values and motivations effect every action you make The main message would be to always do the right thing even when nobody is watching. Behind each thought & decision reason don t rationalize; be aware of teleopathy It is essential to step back & take the time to make ethical decisions in life in order to be happy Corporate world has many circumstances in which ethics are called into question. How they deal with those questions defines ethics of a company Leadership is key & to get success you need to drive for achievement Don t forget your ethics in pursuit of your goals Ethic choices The main message I will take away is what ethics are and how I can use them throughout my entire life in many situations Do the right thing even when no one is looking 10. Which was the most challenging session for you? Why? Simulation x35 Problem solving on the spot x3 Press conference there was a lot of pressure Speaking in front of a crowd Little time/time pressure Lots of info all at once Made me think x2 & try to quickly process things but it was interesting Hard to think so fast about all the information Difficult to figure out what to do while being ethical It felt like we were stuck in a spot Had a short amount of time to prepare your argument Really had to think in a real world situation There were instances in which I felt a strong temptation to not abide by an ethical code Challenged me to think outside the box and overcome obstacles
Working with everyone was interesting Managing every set of information There were a lot but not all mattered so you had to choose important one There was a lot to discuss and a lot to account for Challenging because of the tasks The speech for the CEO, hard to think on your feet, but it was good Taking in all the information from the POGO simulation and coming up with a company statement in front of everyone It required us to process a lot of information, very quickly. It was also difficult because there was no perfect solution. Very time limited trying to address all the problems I didn t really understand what was happening. Also because that type of stuff doesn t catch my attention. It juggled many different issues at once I didn t know what to expect. It was hard at first, but I slowly began to understand, I would love to do it again. There was the situation we don t encounter in our daily life. Because it was unrealistic It was fun yet challenging I have never been presented with such a complicated problem with so many variables Having all of the simulation info given to us. It was a lot to handle but I also wouldn t do it any other way. Very productive challenge because of the curve balls and we had to consider all angles and aspects. I ve never done anything like that before. It s a new experience The business thing because I don t really care to be in business. Deep thinking and challenging Insight into real life ethics was stressful! Speaking in front of everyone was hard, but a great opportunity. Other Comments: The Four-way test because it makes decisions harder to make and it is difficult to think of different scenarios to use it The 8 th session. It was hard to watch how an ethical decision turned out bad but still accomplished. The beginning session because it was a lot to take in while being tired! The Behold & Beware part, I had trouble following it because it was a lot to take in. Sadhu- it s sometimes difficult to know what I should do ethically The first couple, being able to follow through all the talking Describing myself in the boxes x2; was hard to think of things The sessions weren t challenging for me, I had a pleasant time doing them all. Finding resonation in some of the lessons trying to be taught 11. If you were to repeat this workshop at some future date, what changes to the agenda would you make? Why? I m not sure Nothing x 14: this was fantastic; it was great; thought the agenda went very well x2; found it very helpful and interesting, I think others will like it; I was happy with it all; I learned a lot of life lessons that I can take with me for the rest of my life; was a good sequence where we learned and put to good use. Shorten morning sessions, number of examples Shorter x 2/take more breaks x 3, move around more, give more specific details about the Pogo simulation, hard to focus More time for breaks in the morning or start later to be more awake Spend less time on intro to ethics and more time on simulations and examples
Longer period of time for the simulation, since that puts your knowledge of what you ve learned into effect. I d probably combine the 4-way test & moral ethics analysis since they are on the same lines More activities in-between to keep everyone alert & engaged & moving from time to time More time to think of outcomes in simulation Give the businesses different stories- boring to listen to the same charges to Pogo every time In the simulation, incorporate actual money values to add a new element Making more active simulations & scenarios More group sharing because, as stated by Ken Robinson, collaboration, is the stuff of learning/growth More breakfast because I was hungry Explain what NIKE did and why it worked A little more time to read the packets x2 Have more small group talks/activities X 3; more activities with your table Little more time for the simulation that way everyone is more prepped. I would also give more time for the behold & beware discussion I didn t really like the simulation. Instead I would like to do more interactive activities, too much sitting. No baby logic video Less breaks it seemed disruptive Cut short a previous session to give more time to the POGO session to prepare for the presentation more Lessen the lessons, expand time for simulations Stretch! More movement! Can get quite boring sitting in one place Make the morning more interactive so we can learn from our own experiences More activities that involve moving around to avoid sitting for long periods of time The length of the power point, got a little long at the end In the simulation, give a chance for everyone to talk in front on the stage so that everyone will know how to be the CEO. They will know how to act in public. More breaks to get more down time, help focus through all the new info I think it was good having the talks in the morning & discussion in the afternoon
