FALL 2012 SEMESTER SCHEDULE August 27 December 7 NO CLASSES: Sep. 1-3 Labor Day / Nov. 21-25 Thanksgiving Recess HOW TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES Make an appointment with an EI Advisor to register for classes or change your class schedule. F1 students must provide proof of health insurance before registering for classes. New students must take the EI placement test before registering for classes. HOW TO PAY FOR CLASSES Visit the Cashier s Office in RCF-201 to pay for classes with credit card, check, money order, or cash. If you prefer a payment plan, go to http://www.howardcc.edu/paymentplan PAYMENT AND REFUND POLICIES Upon signing the registration form, students commit to paying for all classes in which they have registered. To drop a class or change the class schedule, students must see an EI Advisor. For tuition payment deadlines, please see the chart on the Howard Community College website: http://www.howardcc.edu/admissions/pay/when.html REFUND SCHEDULE 1. If you withdraw BEFORE classes begin, you will be refunded 100% of the tuition and fees paid. 2. If you withdraw during the FIRST WEEK of classes, you will be refunded 100% of the tuition paid. 3. If you withdraw during the SECOND WEEK of classes, you will be refunded 75% of the tuition paid. 4. If you withdraw during the THIRD WEEK of classes, you will be refunded 50% of the tuition paid. 5. In this course, reading is approached as an integral part of an ESL student s overall English language learning. Improve your academic writing skills! This class focuses on paragraph-level writing tasks. As you work on writing, you will also develop vocabulary, spelling, and grammar skills. Prepare for college classes or the TOEFL. Students will acquire the skills needed to produce paragraphs at an intermediate level. A variety of reading selections and discussion activities will be used to teach writing. Paragraph development will progress to the production of an organized essay by the end of the semester. Grammatical skills will also be covered. Books not included. Writing is critical to your future success! Learn short response writing, paragraph writing, new vocabulary and grammar all in one class. While working to improve your skills, you ll find that writing can be fun and interactive. Learn everyday, real spoken English and improve your pronunciation by participating in many different activities: skits, role-plays, dialogs, short presentations, and readings. In each lesson, you ll learn some essential rules of American pronunciation by watching videos of an HCC instructor giving presentations and demonstrating the skills. You will receive practice exercises to try at home, and you will make and submit audio/video passages that will be evaluated by your online instructor. Get more practice in American English pronunciation. You will work on stress, intonation and sounds of English by practicing the rules you have learned in Pronunciation class using short plays, dialogues, games and more. Students must be co-enrolled in a Pronunciation class, or have previously taken an EI Pronunciation class. This is not just a class for memorizing rules! You will get excellent interactive practice using the grammar rules that you ve learned. Topics include verb tenses, possessives, prepositions, and modals. Page 8

Topics include count/noncount nouns, clauses, the passive voice, gerunds and infinitives. Vocabulary Enrichment 4 Mon, Wed 2:00-3:00pm Do you know the essential vocabulary needed for the TOEFL, academic classes, or everyday communication? If not, this class will help you expand your vocabulary and improve your overall English skills. You will learn necessary vocabulary words, phrases, and expressions. You will practice pronouncing, spelling, and using the vocabulary in speaking and writing. Using English in the Community - Levels 4-5 Wednesday 9:10-11:25am Speak with native speakers as you perform volunteer service in the community. In class, you and other students will reflect on your experiences, using English for reading, writing, listening and speaking activities. Outside speakers and videos will broaden your exposure to English. *Must commit to weekly volunteer hours off-campus (minimum 3-4 hours/week) in addition to class time. English for Job Seekers 2 - Levels 4-6 Wednesday 6:30-9:40pm *Business & Professional Certificate Program* This is a career exploration and preparation class. Finding the right job is difficult for native-speakers, but non-native speakers are often frustrated by the process and find themselves misunderstood both in language and culture. Explore what jobs really suit you, learn how to find jobs, and how to get the right job. Topics will include career assessment, resume writing, electronic applications, networking, interviewing, and the culture of the U.S. workplace. Intro to TOEFL Mon, Wed 9:10am-11:25am This is a course for students who would like to begin their preparation for the TOEFL exam but are not ready for the advanced TOEFL preparation course. Topics will include career assessment, resume writing, electronic applications, networking, interviewing, and the culture of the U.S. workplace. This course is designed to improve the English skills of the business professional or someone interested in business pursuits. Communication practice will focus around these key areas of business communication: socializing, negotiating, writing a resume using career assessment instruments, making presentations, interviewing and recruiting, and participating in meetings. This course focuses on current management topics including leadership styles, motivation, recruiting, marketing, use of teams, strategy, dealing with change, managing across cultures, downsizing, finances, and risk management/decision making.
