Academies at Northwood What are Academies? Academies are smaller learning communities within high schools that are designed to help students prepare for higher education and explore possible career pathways. The Academies at Northwood High School focus on community and diversity.
The Academy of Politics, Advocacy, and Law This academy includes the Justice, Law, & Society Program of Study (CTEcareer technology education) 9 th grade course: Introduction to Justice, Law, & Society
The Academy of Technological and Environmental Systems Science This academy includes the Code.org Program of Study (CTE-career technology education) 9 th grade course: AP Computer Science This academy includes the Advanced Technology Education program completer option. 9 th grade course: Foundations of Technology or Foundations of Computer Science
The Humanities, Art, and Media Academy There are a variety of 9 th grade course: Creative Writing, Journalism, Video Production, Art, Ceramics, Photography This academy includes the Audiovisual Communication & Broadcast Technology Program of Study (CTE-career technology education) 9 th grade course: Introduction to Interactive Media
The Academy of Finance, Accounting, Marketing, and Education This academy includes 3 Programs of Study (CTE-Career Technology Education) Early Childhood POS Child Development Business Administration POS Entrepreneurship & Business Management Marketing POS Entrepreneurship & Business Management
The Academy of Music, Theatre, & Dance 9 th grade courses: Piano Guitar Band Orchestra Jazz Ensemble Music Theory Chorus Theatre

Academic Social/Emotional College/Career What Do School Counselors Do? Counselors will help you with your selections of courses, study skills, academic support. They are a person to go to for help when you are struggling they can refer you to the appropriate help. Counselors are available to help you with and personal, social, or emotional concerns. This can be done individually, in groups, or a referral. Counselors will help guide you through the process of selfexploration, career exploration and college applications. Naviance is an integral part of this process.

Course Requirements (these are minimum) English: 4 Credits Math: 4 Credits (must enroll in math every year you are in HS) Science: 3 Credits Social Studies : 3 Credits Fine Arts: 1 Credit Physical Education: 1 Credit Technology: 1 Credit Health: 0.5 Credit Program Completer (2.0-4.5 Range of Credits)
Program Completer (Choose one option) Option 1: 2 credits in a world language AND 2.5 credits in elective courses OR Option 2: 2 credits in advanced technology education AND 2.5 credits in elective courses OR Option 3: 4 credits in a state-approved Program of Study AND 0.5 credit in elective courses
Promotion Policy: 9 th to 10 th grade In order for a student to move from Grade 9 to Grade 10, you must earn: + 1.0 credit Math + 1.0 credit English + 3.0 additional credits (Other Courses) = 5.0 credits end of 9 th grade (minimum # of credits needed to be promoted) For every class you pass, you earn high school credit. The next school year does not automatically make you the next grade level.
Reminders as you Register Today Choose an Academy Choose 7 classes Strongly consider teacher recommendations Indicate alternative electives on back of the registration card Indicate on the registration card if you speak Spanish or French at home (World Languages section) Complete both sides of the registration card Refer to MyMCPS Scheduling Instructions for the online registration directions. You will complete your registration online!

Incoming 9 th grade parent Night: February 12, 2019 at Northwood HS, 7pm Registration Card due to your middle school counselor: February 15, 2019 *If you don t turn in your registration card and complete the online registration process, your high school counselor will pick classes for you!
TO REGISTER: 1: Turn On Chromebook 2: Log In as you normally do
Go to MyMCPS Portal to Register Use this link http://portal.mcpsmd.org 1. Enter your MCPS username (Student ID #) 2. Enter your password (same password you use to log into the computers at school) 3. Click Sign In
On the blue Navigation Bar, Look for Class Registraton Click on it to open.
ICON Key: Green Red! & There are several categories of classes from which you will select your courses for next year. On the right side of the screen you will see icons that indicate actions to be made. Green = choice has been made or no choice is required for this section Red!= a selection still needs to be made button = edit and choose classes
Once You Have Selected all of your Courses... Click the Submit button in the bottom right of the screen. This will show you a list of all your course requests. Review your selections.
Confirm that this list exactly matches the courses on your paper registration card. You have now successfully requested courses for next year. Use the Sign Out link located in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
