Careers Bulletin for week commencing 1 st October 2018 A plea for parental assistance: Parents of Years 12 and 13 only: Please email me this week if you have a view on this bulletin: I simply want to know what you find useful, and what could be better. Thank you in advance. sco@wirralgirls.co.uk I will be asking parents of other year groups for their views later in the year. THIS WEEK S EDITORIAL Year 11,12,13: On of this week s themes is about the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019 which has just been published, and contains some interesting findings. There will be copies of this year s Sunday Times Good University Guide in the Careers Room and every Year 11,12,13 Form Tutor will have one to share and discuss with students in the coming week. It is a complicated document - it rates universities in several different categories, so just because a university s overall rating is not in the top 20 does not mean it does not offer something you may want. So, while this can inform your thinking, do not let it dominate. Key Points: The University of the Year is Loughborough, in the East Midlands, scoring strongly in many areas.

As usual, Oxford and Cambridge come top, but Loughborough is now regarded as 5 th best. The data is complex, so here are some stand out things to consider: Best for Teaching Quality: (in order) Aberystwyth, Plymouth Marjon, St Andrews, Bolton, Leeds Arts, Wales Trinity St David, Liverpool Hope, Buckingham, Staffordshire. Worst for student experience: LSE (London School of Economics), University of Suffolk, King s College London, and Reading all score badly. Best for student experience: St Andrew s, Loughborough, Aberystwyth, Weston of England, Coventry, Keele, Liverpool Hope, Buckingham, Leeds Arts, with Leeds Trinity, Lancaster, Leeds all in top 20. Top in the Wet Midlands: (in order) Warwick, (10 th ) Birmingham, (14 th ) Harper Adams, (33 rd ) Coventry (46 th ), Keele (48 th ) Aston (56 th ) Staffordshire (57 th ) and Birmingham City (87 th ) Best for job opportunities: (In order) St George s London, Imperial College London, Lancaster, London South Bank, Bath, Loughborough, Cambridge, LSE, Nottingham, Birmingham, Newcastle. Liverpool was 14 th, Liverpool Hope, 20 th. The guide is comprehensive and covers EVERY University in some way. Have a look at it in school. Studying abroad in the USA. Over 6000 students from the UK are currently studying in the USA< tempted by the outstanding institutions 21 pf the top 100 universities n the world arte in the USA, there are unrivalled facilities, a flexible liberal arts programme, and New York Boston, California and Florida are all popular UK student destinations.
