The new requirements reflect a clearer focus n interaction design and user research, which are both core strengths of the SlAT division. The two prior areas f focus that rely on courses outside of our division (and in one case outside of our university) have been dropped. The three required skills courses have been re-iabeled as core courses, and two more of them (statistics-ajpl 631 and UX project management-lola 715) have been specified. For the third, students can choose between th same programming courses previously specified (IDIA 616,618, or 619) or they can substitute agraphic design co rse (*IDIA 602). The requirement to add statistics and project management as two of the core skills expected of all graduates reflects the changing needs of the marketplace and the feedback of our alumni about the skills they need after graduation. The "areas of focus" were not formal tracks nor formally recognized in the award of the degree. They did not thow up on student transcripts. Re-Iocating this choice of focus to the student's choice of electives will not affect their anscript or the way that the degree is awarded. Students will still be able to choose afocus (between user research a d interaction design) and implement it through their electives, but this focus will be handled through individual a vising. After these changes, the marketing materials for the degree can focus on user experience research and interaction design--core strengths of the SlAT division.
