IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER McCann Crescent, Lenah Valley Phone 6228 3335 email: ihms@catholic.tas.edu.au web: www.ihms.tas.edu.au PO Box 429 Lenah Valley 7008 No 4 22 nd March 2018 Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! (Matthew: 21:9b) Dear Community Members, As we approach the Easter season (next Friday 30th March - Tuesday 3rd March), I reminded all students that when we wake up on Easter Sunday that we all remember the real reason why we receive chocolate eggs, bunnies, etc on that day. The answer the students gave me was that it was for Jesus resurrection. Please keep safe over the 5 day long weekend and we will see all students back and raring to go for the final two weeks of Term 1 on Wednesday. Catholic Education Week Last Sunday (18 th March) we began Catholic Education Week (CEW). CEW goes through until this Saturday. During the week students have discussed and celebrated in what makes us a Catholic School. It was amazing to hear some of the answers the students gave. Please make sure you ask your child what some of the answers were! Today, 20 students accompanied Mr Paul Egan, Ms Bridget Cairns and myself to St Mary s Cathedral to celebrate Mass with all Southern Catholic Schools. I congratulate these students on the way they represented the best Catholic School in Australia! They are a real credit to the school and their families. National Day Against Bullying and Violence Last Friday 16 th March it was the National Day Against Bullying and Violence. We arrived to school to see anti-bullying slogans written on windows and doors all around the school. I thank the Grade 6 students for coming up with this great idea and writing these messages! We at IHMCS have zero tolerance on bullying and violence and we encourage the entire community to do the same. On this day all classes discussed this topic and proactive ways of preventing, naming and identifying bullying. Carrying of School Bags - A Friendly Tip Many parents/grandparents think that it is helping their child if the adult carries their bag for them. By Prep we encourage the students to carry their own bag to and from school. The reason is that we believe it promotes independence and helps the students become more organised and independent with their learning. Events and Fundraiser Help Form I thank all community members who have returned their Events and Fundraisers Help Form. Without this parent help then many events would not be able to happen at Immaculate Heart of Mary. ALL money raised this year will be spent on additional playground equipment for the children. If you have not returned your form as yet then please drop it off to your class teacher ASAP.
Learn to Swim Program (Prep to Grade 6) Our annual Learn to Swim begins next Thursday 29th March at the YMCA Clarence Aquatic Centre. If you missed this notice then you can view it on our website under notices and also through our App. Optional Winter Coat A reminder that the school winter coats are to be worn over the top of the full school uniform i.e. it should be worn over the polar fleece jacket with the sports uniform and over the soft shell jacket with the formal uniform. The winter coat is an optional extra it s not an instead of uniform item and should only be worn to and from school and at recess and lunch time. Students are not permitted to wear their winter coat inside during class time. Thank you for your help with this. Student Free Days - 1st day of Term 3 and Show Day The Tasmanian Catholic Education Office has instructed all schools that we will be having two student free days during the year. The dates of these are: Monday 23 rd July (1st day of Term 3) and Friday 26 th October (day after Show Day). Subway Lunch Day Change of Date We will have Subway on Thursday 5 th April (the week after Easter) instead of Wednesday 4 th April as we won t be at school to collect orders on the Tuesday. A reminder is in the calendar of events. Harmony Day The Grade 5/6 School Parliament Ministry of Culture recently celebrated Harmony Day. The students organised for students to wear orange and in keeping with this theme they offered free oranges at recess time. It was pleasing to see their initiative and their willingness to understand the importance of cultural connectivity. Extension Program Five of our students were invited to a day at St Mary's College where students from all Southern Catholic Schools were able to participate in extension programs in areas of choice. These included Maths, Science, Philosophy and Creative Writing. They certainly worked hard and came back with positive experiences about the day. Later in the year it is hoped there s another day with a concentration on the Arts. Going to Sacred Heart College for High School? We are very fortunate that SHC automatically accept our G6 students for high school, however, parents are still required to complete an enrolment form for their records. Forms are available online http://www.shc.tas.edu.au/enrolment/ or at the Immaculate Heart Office. If you decide you would not like to accept a place at SHC please let us know so we can pass the information on and your place can be offered to someone else. 2019 Grade 7 applications close on 29 th March, 2018.
