BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE Government College, Rajahmundry started functioning as a Zilla school in 1853 and was upgraded as a Provincial school of Madras presidency in 1868. This was the beginning of the unbroken story of Government College, Rajahmundry which completed 160 years of its mammoth service in the field of Higher Education. It is the first and the oldest college in Andhra Pradesh. The high school classes were discontinued in 1885 and since then the college has remained exclusively as college for University classes. The College was affiliated to University of Madras in 1891. At the commencement of 19th century, the Government College at Rajahmundry was one of the only three graded Colleges maintained by Government in Madras Presidency, and the other two being the Presidency College at Chennai and the Kumbakonam College at Kumbakonam. Having been started by the British, the college imparted Higher Education of European Standards under the masterly guidance of academic luminaries from Oxford and Cambridge Universities and produced personae par excellence in all fields of life and learning. STALWARTS OF ARTS COLLEGE : The great people who served this institution include Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who worked as a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy (1916-1919). He was the first Vice-President of India (1952-1962), and also served as second President (1962-1967) of India and is considered as the most influential scholar of comparative religion and philosophy. Another stalwart Sri. Kandukuri veeresalingam Pantulu who was a social reformer of Andhra Pradesh worked in this college as a faculty member in Telugu Department during the year 1876-77. He is widely considered as the man who first brought about the renaissance in Telugu people and Telugu literature. He fought for the emancipation and empowerment of women way back in 1910. Some of the students of this Alma mater, who later turned into giants in various spheres were Sri K.V. Reddy Naidu, Acting Governor in 1936 in Madras Presidency, Sri Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu, known as Andhra Kesari (literally, the Lion of Andhra) and the first Chief Minister of the erstwhile Madras province that was to become Andhra State, Sri Varahagiri Jogiah Panthulu (illustrious father of V.V. Giri former President of India), Sri V.K. Krishna Menon (former Defence Minister of India) and Sri P.S. Rao, Chairman, Damodar Valley Corporation, former Governor of Kerala and an awardee of Padmabhushan. The college also produced some outstanding literary and artistic stalwarts like Sri Damerla Rama Rao and freedom fighters like Sri Gadicherla Harisarvottama Rao who took active part in Vandematharam Movement in pre-independence era and Sri Koka Subba Rao, the former Chief Justice of Supreme court. The college was affiliated to Andhra University in 1926. From 2012-13, the first year Degree courses are affiliated to Adikavi Nannaya University, Rajahmundry. The Centenary celebrations of the College were held in February 1960, with Sri C.D.Deshmukh, the then Chairman of U.G.C, as President. Undergraduate courses were started in the college from 1930. PUC and Intermediate courses were withdrawn in 1971-72 and Vocational course in B.Com (Computers) was introduced during the academic year 2007. B.A with Economics, Statistics and Computer Applications, was started in 2007-08 and B.Sc with combinations of Mathematics, Economics, Statistics and Geography, Geology and Computer Science were started in 2008. The college has started restructured courses in B.Sc on self finance basis with combinations of Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science; Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science; Biotechnology, Botany, Chemistry and Microbiology, Zoology, Chemistry. Post graduate courses in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry were started during the academic year 1971-72 and the college has the distinction of being the first College in Government sector to introduce the Post Graduate courses in Science subjects. M.A. (Telugu) and M.Com. Courses were introduced from 1982 and 1987 respectively. M.Sc (Zoology) was started during 2001-02 and M.Sc (Botany) in 2009 on self finance basis. At present, the college offers instruction in 21 UG programmes and 7 PG programmes. The Department of Chemistry has been recognized by Andhra University as Research center and it is offering M.Phil and Ph.D courses in Chemistry and the Department has produced 2 Ph.D s and 5 M.Phil s so far. The Department of Physics has also been recognized as a Research Centre by Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. Some scholars are carrying out research in the Departments of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics for M.Phil and Ph.D degrees. Metcalfe Boys Hostel, attached to the college was started in July 1950. It is under the control of the Principal assisted by a committee consisting of a Deputy warden and other staff members of the college. A new girls hostel was built in the college campus with UGC funds and it was opened in August, 2011 and can accommodate a strength of 100 girls.
