FES President May 2013 Message from Your President I started watching the NASA Channel the last couple of months. After getting a notification from the NASA App on my Android phone on sighting opportunities, I watched the International Space Station (ISS) fly over Tallahassee in about 4 minutes one evening after sunset from my back yard! The ISS and smart phones are amazing pieces of engineering. We are lucky to have the Challenger Learning Center as a partner for our meetings and K-12 activities. Check out the ISS display there next meeting. We are planning to support the Florida Astronaut Challenge again next year as a K-12 activity with the Florida Engineering Foundation. As we wind up our Big Bend Chapter activities in May and prepare for a summer break in our meetings until August, I hope everyone is staying plugged-in to what has been going on in our engineering profession. Governor Scott signed into law last month Senate Bill 268, a very important step to rectify how design professionals can protect their liability against being sued individually and design firms can continue to negotiate contracts to deal with liability on projects. Our FES Headquarters staff did tremendous work on our behalf on this issue. Next time you see one of them or Frank Ruud, offer your thanks and congratulations on a job well done. I encourage you to read up on this issue if you have not already. We will hold our new Officers Induction Ceremony at our May luncheon meeting. If you haven t yet returned your ballot to vote on our new Officers, please do so and plan to attend because we are honored to have Angelina Fairchild, P.E., our State FES President, in town from Palm Beach to speak and conduct our Officers Induction Ceremony. We are planning a membership give-back function in June to do something fun during the Summer, based on excellent survey input from our Members. Stay tuned for more information on this event. Many thanks to our FES Big Bend Chapter Officers who have performed superbly this year, and welcome to Moni Mtenga and Brian Urban who are stepping up to serve as K-12 Chair and Membership Chair. Plan to join us for lunch at the Challenger Learning Center May 16 th! Phil Sanders, P.E.

Page 2 Message from President-Elect Wow it is so hard to believe 2013 is almost half over. My baby boy will turn one at the end of the month, school is almost out and we are closing another great year with the FES. We have been busy this year! We had a successful Golf Tournament that raised money for MATHCOUNTS. Our MATHCOUNTS competition was a hit and our local team competes at the National Competition in Washington, DC on May 10 th. We raised over $1500 for college scholarships with our silent auction. Our monthly meetings and socials were well attended. Overall I think it s safe to say our chapter is a success and it s all because of you, the members, continuing to be involved. THANK YOU! A few special thank you s: Audra Hayden for backing me up with MATHCOUNTS and coordinating the silent auction, JW Hunter for organizing the golf tournament, supporting our executive committee, and being our liaison to the student chapter, Giuliana Mendez for being my right hand lady! Mike Wilson, Richard Musgrove, Phil Sanders, Greg Bowyer, Bryant King, Victor Muchuruza, Mark Fuller and Ashok Shahane for all your hard work a dedication to ensure the this year was a success. We will host FES President, Angelina Fairchild, PE, at this month s meeting on May 16 th. She will discuss how FES has played a role in her life and career, as well as induct next year s officers. Please make plans to attend. Angelina is sure to enlighten us and our new officers need your support. Don t sit back and wait for our 2013-2014 year to begin because there is so much to do over the summer. The results of our survey indicated you wanted a family evening social on June 22 nd. We are in the process of making the final plans, so be on the lookout for details! We hope to see you there! And don t forget to invite a colleague to join us! We also have the Chapter Leadership Conference in Palm Coast - June 14 th - and the Annual Conference at The Breakers in Palm Beach - July 31 st to August 3 rd! Please take advantage of these opportunities to be involved with FES at the state level and to network with our fellow engineers from across the state. I am looking forward to the exciting year ahead. We have a lot to accomplish! Ashley Anderson, PE FES President-Elect
